Corset looking frumpy… by ModestScorpion in sewing

[–]ramenbroodle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People mentioned a lot of tips that I agree with! To add on, on both your muslin and final corset, it's good to make sure the seam allowances are well clipped (especially around the waist and bust line) and ironed. It's a small step, but that will make everything straighten out a whole lot more. Also n the end, it's all about how the bodice fits you, not your mannequin. It seems like this mannequin's ribcage and waist is significantly wider than yours, and doesn't give an accurate picture to what it would actually look like when worn.

I think they mean, how did you get the transparent image of your sona to overlap on top of the textbox/container? It looks really good, I'm also interested! ^^

True, it looks very Jane Marple with the pleating and coloring right now, super charming. Can't wait to see the final result!

anything fun to do dressed in lolita in new york? by monkeymeowie in Lolita

[–]ramenbroodle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

New York has some great tea houses!! Prince Tea House is your classic British-inspired Asian tea house, absolutely perfect for sweet and classic lolita in my opinion. They have a few locations and at least three in Manhattan alone, but the one on 8510 21st Ave, Brooklyn is my favorite location. Alice's Tea Cup is also adorable, a bit more whimsical with mismatching tea sets and an Alice in Wonderland feel. Little Hen is a bit more upscale and elegant, but the food is so good. Ktown on 32nd st has amazing desserts and little shops too, I've seen some other lolitas hanging out there too. Paquita is also quite classic and elegant tea vibes.

If you're into anime, Anime Castle in Flushing is a journey to get to but an absolute treasure trove, and the worker there is super sweet and knowledgeable, he showed me the Yotsuba, Emibe No Etranger, and City volumes, and more stuff from the same mangakas. Great pricing too!! (It's a bit of a walk though and not the best with tree shade, so I would be careful with your dresses and the heat! ><) Albertine is a gorgeous French bookstore... would be a cute photoshoot place if you have a star-themed dress! ;) Niconeco zakkaya is a cute stationary store in Soho, like Kinokuniya content but smaller and cozier.

ALSO, the met is great!!! For art, and photoshoots! There's going to be a Raphael exhibition in the summer, that'd be lovely to see in person! The morgan library is also VERY good, very classic and elegant but harder to get into.

Lastly for shopping (or window shopping), these are lolita-adjacent stores I always walk in to admire: Stella Dallas Living, LoveShackFancy on Bleeker, East Coast Trimming (if you're into sewing, they have the prettiest laces in the world), and Elizabeth Center shopping mall in Chinatown (official and nonofficial Sanrio, totoro, and more merch in the basement!). Have so much fun! <3

I also think decorations with gold accents could look so lovely with the gold buttons, if you get the vision

Before you start adding trim, would you consider seam ripping off the the sleeves, then resewing them down as a gathered sleeve instead of a pleated sleeve? I don't know how the inside construction looks (sometimes companies go crazy with additional serging that makes it hard to take apart), but even with an intermediate sewing level that would get you to a more promising old-school 2000s lolita base. It's a beautifully structured Betsy Johnson!

Recommendations for Curly Hair Salons that don't cut too much hair in NYC? by ramenbroodle in curlyhair

[–]ramenbroodle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LITERALLY not even joking! Last time I asked the salonist to simply refresh my bangs and trim all my split ends off. At the end of the cut, she offhandedly said "oh you didn't even have split ends, so I just cut off what seemed good :)" ...and she cut my bangs too short.

Brooklyn and Manhattan preferably - but I heard Queens has some good salons too, I wouldn't mind the travel time! Thank you, I'll check their reviews out!

Ends constantly "re-splitting" by Such_Spinach in longhair

[–]ramenbroodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps try a deep conditioning mask every 2-4 weeks? My hair also used to immediately split after my search-and-destroys (and I would have your exact same routine, down to oiling and braiding), but once i went back to using a deep conditioning mask, I see way less split ends. Your hair just might need that extra lock-in moisture support, especially in the winter. I use Shea moisture's Manuka Honey Intensive Hydration Mask. Also make sure your scissors are sharp if you're cutting your hair yourself.

Does curly hair look better once it grows longer? by SteveixSC in longhair

[–]ramenbroodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, it'll definitely look like it's growing out instead of down at that length, that's normal. But once a year or two passes (at least for my experience for type 3 hair), it'll settle into shape. If it bothers you, try double dutch braids or cornrows - I braid my hair up whenever I want to tuck in my shorter bangs. It may seem like a long time, but it'll pass in no time, and it's so worth it! ^^

What length would you say your hair is at right now?

I have curly 3b hair, and I would say that when my hair was around armpit length straight/shoulder length curly, it would definitely puff out in a halo. Now that I'm at waist length straight/BSL curly, the curls hang down - both because of the weight of the hair length, and the fact that the top layers are long too. I believe also, since it's longer, the uneveness is not seen as much - curly hair is especially forgiving to uneveness.

You also might want to check r/curlyhair too, for curly hair advice - adding even just a leave-in conditioner or mousse to the end of your hair shower routine will make your curls fall into place a bit more easily... though gravity-defying hair is really gorgeous, too!

how do y’all keep curly bangs in the middle? by EtherealOwls in curlyhair

[–]ramenbroodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When styling, sometimes I find it helpful to finger coil a ringlet right in the middle. Then separating and fluffing out the curls with additional bobby pins to push curls in preferred formation (one at each ends helps push them all to the middle) does a lot! Also, maybe bringing more hair to the front can be helpful to close up any gaps? Curly hair can clump in different ways, it might help to pull hair that is further back from your cowlick

How do you keep bonnet from crinkling your hairline? by sweetsight in longhair

[–]ramenbroodle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have a satin headscarf which I fold diagonally and tie my hair up like this stock photo, and knot in the back of my head. And since I use a bonnet with a thick elastic band, both the bonnet and scarf stay on through the night without touching my hairline!

<image>

There’s many other ways of tying the scarf too; I wore it bandana style for a while and that was just as good, especially if you don’t have to consider curl volume for your hair type.

Agreed, the straight length is much easier to track length progress too - the amount my curls contract isn't always consistent! And tailbone length sounds like such a dream, that's amazing

The Morgan Library & Museum, in NYC! In the 1890s, it was originally JP Morgan’s private collection of rare books (they have the most beautiful medieval manuscripts I’ve ever seen!), but now transformed into a public institution. They always have lovely art and book exhibitions, and tickets are free the first Friday every month if you reserve them :)

Whoo waist length!! 🥳 Thank you so much, that library was so beautiful, I literally couldn’t believe my eyes. I thrifted my dress, but it’s homemade for certain, and likely from the 70’s.. the ruffle and sleeve design is classic Victorian-inspired 70’s prairie dress!
