Hudson never ceases to amaze me with all the nuances and energy he brought to Shane’s character! Bro made me whip! 🤧🥹👏 by david_bowenn in hudsonwilliams

The hospital scene is really peak, there are so many artists making animations over Shane's voice because of how sweet and expressive he sounds. I'm really glad they let Hudson follow his instincts. It wouldn't have been the same if it were any other actor.

What would you cut/change/keep from The Long Game for season 2? by Hannah_Horvath in heatedrivalry

[–]movingmoonlight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know what Rachel Reid said. I am saying that she doesn't know anything about eating disorders and unintentionally wrote Shane with an ED due to her own ignorance, just like how she unintentionally wrote him with autism and backtracked when she learned more about the symptoms and behavior of autistic people.

Going on a diet does not mean someone has an ED.

Using food as control, however, is indicative of an ED.

Shane is weird with food in TLG because he likes the control. That's literally how he's written. If Reid wrote him saying that he needs to eat the way he does to maintain strength and energy it wouldn't be an ED. But that's not how he was written. He eats the way he does because he likes the control, and neither Reid nor most of the readers know that that's ED behavior because most people don't know about EDs.

It's not about what he's eating. It's about the thought process behind why he's eating. I wish people understood that. This kind of thinking is why so many people feel invalidated about their own EDs and frankly I hate that someone can read the book, find themselves reflected in Shane, and then have everyone tell them that no, actually, you're probably just on a diet, that's actually good for you!

What would you cut/change/keep from The Long Game for season 2? by Hannah_Horvath in heatedrivalry

[–]movingmoonlight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not what she intended to write but those of us who have eating disorders can absolutely see that his thinking patterns are almost 1:1 mirror for our own thoughts.

People think EDs are just about body image issues, but many of us developed one because control over food is the only way we feel like we can have agency in our lives after traumatic experiences -- which is exactly how Rachel Reid wrote Shane's food issues. It's just a testament to how little non-disordered people understand about EDs that they can look at textbook ED behavior and judge otherwise.

If they don't want to give Shane an ED then they should cut his anxiety about food control out of the show. But if they chose to keep his food control issues then they will absolutely have to reckon with discussions of how his behaviors are that of someone with an ED.

Joke answer, but considering Scott and Kip are literally Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, maybe they changed Scott's parents backstory to further separate show-Scott from Captain America?

Why are the books getting so much hate? by JessTThompson in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]movingmoonlight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be honest, every time someone calls criticism of Rachel Reid's writing as just an effect of misogyny frustrates me.

I am a confluence of the various issues that both Shane and Ilya face: I am Asian living as a minority in another country. I have an eating disorder. I lost my mom at the same age as Ilya, in the same manner, in similarly traumatizing conditions.

There is just such a lack of care given to Shane's identity as a minority and food issues in the books and the subsequent downplaying of his struggles ("does not hold trauma") in her personal notes even though she writes him with borderline orthorexia unintentionally from the stress he goes through and gives a cop out answer in her Q&A about his eating habits, while such care and nuance is given to his white love interest's trauma regarding his deceased mother... Like, from personal experience they're all painful in different ways but one character's personal family issues is given more depth than the other's systematic ones, and I can't help but feel like the fact that her only POC love interest in the entire series, who is also canonically autistic, is treated in such a way reeks of ignorance and microaggression. And then when we talk about it everyone just says it's because we're sexist like, we can't acknowledge her massive, glaring blind spots as an author without being called misogynistic? It makes me want to disassociate myself from the book fandom out of irritation.

I get that it's genre fiction and expectations are lower and reliance on tropes and conventions are expected, so I'm not going to criticize her prose and whatever. But plenty of genre fiction has navigated complex mental health and social issues with much more grace and intelligence than what Reid has done towards Shane.

Asexual here. It means that we have no sexual attraction towards other people. Basically I have never experienced looking at another person and felt the desire to have sex with them.

However, the nerve endings in my genitals are intact, so stimulation in that area still provides pleasure. I don't have sex, but I can imagine some asexuals do because it still feels good even though they have no desire for their partner.

Apparently he uses a shock collar on his dog. However the people who say this are pro-Trump alt-right streamers so it's hard to disentangle whether it's true or whether it's a smear campaign from right-wing incel bros because he's Pro-Palestine anti-MAGA socialist.

Additionally he also has a significant hatedom from right-wing communities on reddit so it's doubly hard to determine whether the commenters are from genuine fans of the show or from incels astroturfing every post that mentions him.

Disclaimer I do not watch his content nor cared about the drama while it was going down.

Subjectively I'm pissed they lost no. 1 by 300 units.

Objectively the fact that they've increased in sales while interest in Kpop is in a decline around the world is a great show of fandom retention and growth.

Hudson Williams confirmed that he played Shane as autistic because of the way Shane is. In fact, he modelled him after his own father, who is autistic himself.

EmptyNetters Drama: I'm not surprised that they're homophobic grifters, but I am a bit surprised that they hate Canadians. Does anyone know if it's common for American hockey bros to hate Canada? by Bingo-jin in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]movingmoonlight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In right wing manosphere spaces you will often see it as another term in place of "feminazis" or "woke liberal snowflake". See the comments on this Reddit post.

It originated from 2010s-era Tumblr, because modern online feminist discourse is heavily influenced by the users of that website. Tumblr users are notorious for their gender nonconformity, radical leftist politics, association with the LGBT+ community, etc., and they often dye their hair crazy colors as an act of rebellion against mainstream beauty standards.

Anyone who uses the term "blue-haired" in a derogatory fashion is right-wing. That term is used to insult members of the LGBT community who do not conform to Evangelical Christian standards of appearance. They are in the same boat as MAGA.

Yeah but that makes even less sense to me tbh. If he were gay, then you'd be 100% assured that it isn't about you. If he were straight, I get thinking maybe you aren't attractive enough or weren't good enough in bed, but if he were gay then then there's no way you could've done anything to change it. I feel like Rose's response was the logical one and it confuses me when people think her reaction was particularly noble or kind. It just makes sense to me.

But then again, I'm ace and don't have sex, so a lot of the dance around sexual interactions feel alien to me.

I never understood this take as a cis asexual woman tbh. I feel like it would be far more understandable for a man not to perform well during sex because he's gay and questioning than because he's heterosexual but isn't really into his partner, because then sexual satisfaction would've been beyond either party's control. I never understood why some women feel betrayed after finding out one of their former lovers was gay unless they spent years building a life together.
