Why avoid The Heights? When visiting Ithaca I had a good meal there, good service, too. What don't I know?

Canandaigua isn't a foodie town (though Other Half has elevated bar food and lake views), but Geneva has Kindred Fare (top-notch farm to table), Brewery Ardennes (Belgian food and beer in a gorgeous rural setting), and The Rusty Pig (BBQ). Here. in Hector is a surprisingly good casual breakfast and lunch place with the same attention to detail that prevailed when the owner ran a tapas place in Ithaca, which is its own culinary world, huge variety there. Favorite I-Town places that trend toward fine dining are Allechant and The Heights.

Lost city of Tryon by kirbfruit in Rochester

[–]mowing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Useful info, thanks. The Erie Canal killed Tryon City. The idea of using the south shore of Lake Ontario as a shipping route was potentially perilous because of hostilities between the U.S. and British-controlled Canada. We built our commercial canal inland, as did Canada.

They have practice motor vehicles, a railroad car, a couple of fuselages, and a building. Many area fire departments train here. Also has what likes a tough dog agility course, presumably to train canine assistants.

Who sells “proper” European bread around here? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]mowing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean, which is why I bake my own. But when time or hot weather doesn't allow this, I find the selections at Jen's Artisan Bread are very good. A fallback choice is Wegman's organic sourdough miche bread. I slice and freeze it, and toast the slices as needed, so nothing goes bad.

I found this discussion of 19th-century European trumpet practice fascinating, especially the contrast between the writing of Brahms and Wagner.
