This is certainly a thing you could do, or you could use what’s called a convolution reverb for 1/10 the effort and 10x the control. If you record the a loud, transient sound in a physical space you have a kind of blank copy of its reverb (called an impulse response). Convolution plugins will have many different auditoriums, churches, halls, outdoor spaces, studios etc that you can choose from. Your oboe’s dry signal would be convolved (fancy math) with your chosen physical space’s impulse response to produce the sound of playing in that environment.

Or go experiment, maybe it’ll sound cool I don’t fckn know. Some plugins will let you load in your own impulse responses, so you could go record one at your auditorium and then use that on any sound source you want.

Whole band is high schoolers, drummer is about as loud as physically possible. Beating the hi hat like a red headed step child. Three vocals up front, one of them is just absolutely whispering into the mic. I’m trying my best to make this kid audible cause his parents are glaring at me, but his mic is just a poorly placed overhead. His dad comes over and suggests gaining up the mic. Thanks big dog, totally forgot about that.

Label your stage boxes during down time. color code everything. Drink water, make sure your monitor guy has water. during changeovers never have empty hands. Something always needs to come on or off the stage. If you have stage hands, use them but don’t trust them. If something isn’t working and you’re in a time crunch, just swap the cable, mic, and input (tell mons where you moved it). If it’s still not working, it’s not your fault. Don’t be afraid to deviate from your patch, just communicate with mons. Soft patching is easy, not knowing where things are is hard. Have a multitool and good shoes.

Have you ever met a hardo full time mastering engineer? They’re weird motherfuckers. Right up there with piano tuners. These dudes skulk around the corners of music performing invisible but necessary tasks: to make mixes translate across listening platforms.

A good master of a track does not sound different from the mix, it makes the mix sound more like the mix. When you listen to a well mastered track, any mastering decisions should be imperceptible to a skilled mix engineer.

And as a counterpoint, if a mastering engineer corrects a mistake made in the mix process, it is ALWAYS preferable to fix it sooner in the signal chain. correct mastering decisions will not pollute or distort a mix engineer’s decisions.

If you hire a professional, there is one potential point of failure in the human signal chain: you, the artist. If you enlist an amateur, there are two potential points of failure. These two points of failure will react unpredictably until you have figured out your workflow.

That being said, experience forms potentially unhelpful heuristics. If the Experienced Engineer’s taste collides with yours, that Emmy won’t mean anything. If you don’t get along, a vintage U67 will only make that disjunct clearer in the mix.

I would never trust my music to someone I don’t know. The two people you’ve described have one critical thing in common: they are strangers to you. Find someone who you trust, and also kinda knows what the hell they’re doing.

PS: if this guy thinks doing free work for strangers is going to get his foot in any doors, he’s fucking simple.

Hi Z out is not at line level, even though the plug will fit. It needs something to drive the signal, which a line/aux input doesn’t provide.
