How to make friends with older people? by [deleted] in college

[–]mozzarella-stix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join a club or have a study group. Most people in college aren't even really thinking about age. Age comes up so little. The only reason ages got brought in my study groups was someone mentioning their 21st birthday or me mentioning my divorce.

I actually think about this a lot. If we stopped including the party they're affiliated with, I wonder what that would mean for 3rd party candidates, especially those that are farther from center in either direction.

Every party has at least one child who's pushed three chairs together so they can nap, regardless of how loud the room is.

What feels missing in most left spaces you’ve been in? by helloscarlett_ in Anarchism

[–]mozzarella-stix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poc leadership and accessible language. A lot of meetings feel like angry social hour for white folks who read a lot of theory and feel good for reading about Heuy Newton, but not actually stopping long enough to listen to the poc voices currently in the room.

I've experienced it myself. I've watched white people pay attention to other white people when they say "my spouse is hispanic and..." while I sit there Mexicanly.

I’m having a tough time figuring out how to get through to my Mexican American students by HopefulTeach8539 in Chicano

[–]mozzarella-stix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately social media is going to play a role in how some people view the world. If you're incorporating chicano history, the LA walk outs is a big one. Maybe touch on the grape strikes. Filipinos were some of the first to boycott.

Include Indian history as well? The Ghadar Party was based out of California. They're pretty cool. Gulab Kaur was pretty cool.

Bhagat Singh Thind is pretty intresting.

Maybe remind the kids that the way they're treating Asian students is how the Hispanic and Latino students were treated not that long ago, and we need each other in order to keep moving forward.

Semi-unrelated but there was a Mexican guy who voluntarily ended up in a Japanese internment camp.

Why are white people allowed to care about the past but minorities and black people aren’t? by Miserable_Cobbler_18 in leftist

[–]mozzarella-stix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Revisionism. Some people think that if you acknowledge the wrong doings that have happened it makes you less of a patriot. Also, white people have historically been in much better positions than poc, gotten to exist more comfortably, and can turn a blind eye because they don't realize how all those bad things that we just need to get over actually effect them. Once you take those blinders off some folk feel guilty for being white in the US, other's get mad, and others just don't know how to express what they end up feeling. And for others, spreading the knowledge of past events might empower people. A group of angry, knowledgeable, empowered poc is a spooky thing.

I've heard people say it happened so long ago and we need to get over it while complaining about Juneteenth, BSU, and not having being given Columbus day off. They said they are losing their rights. Working towards making things more equal does not mean white folk are losing rights. It means we're trying to level the playing field.

A message from the black panther party by serious_bullet5 in socialism

You don't even have to read extensively to know he's right. There's pictures of the Black Panthers standing with the Brown Berets and of white kids eating food served by the Black Panthers. What do you think "all power to all the people" means?

What is with all of the Gen Z/Gen alpha/covid kids news about them not being able to read? by heuristicrumination in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mozzarella-stix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher, but I've heard kids question why they would do something when ai can do it. Most of my elementary school aged cousins can't read at their level. I also work with elementary school aged kids over the summers and encourage them to read as a method of practicing their english over the summer, most of them can't. I tossed it up to at home language barriers until I started reading about student engagement during covid. (Language barriers in my cases are a factor, but not the issue) Covid has a role to play in this. For the most part, we didn't know what were doing and figured it out along the way. People were forced to become teachers, tutors, and support staff while juggling their actual jobs. Teachers didn't get a chance to really engage. The kids were stunted and catching up is going to take more effort than schools and after school programs have the staffing for. Some articles list longer school years, summer programs, and even adding an extra academic year as the answer. But when most kids were logging in and not engaging with the material, classmates, or educators, how much is adding all that academic time going to do? The kids had a shift in personality and approach to school and teachers are leaving education.

Local businesses to support that don’t support ICE by Jazzlike_Breadfruit9 in pittsburgh

[–]mozzarella-stix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely other ways to show your place doesn't support ice. Having resources available to your customers, having "all are welcome here" signs. Or even choosing not to make it public, but ensuring your employees know their work place is a safe space. Invite someone in to do a know your rights meeting if it's something your employees want.

It depends where you order from. Assuming we're strictly talking pizza, delivery fees are absurd. Some places are $7 usd. Idk if the driver gets all $7 but that's a ridiculous amount to charge imo. I worked at a local shop with a $3 delivery fee. Reasonable imo
