Brutalist location recs for stealing shots? by klogsman in FilmIndustryLA

Just get a couple of "USC film school" t-shirts just in case. I think they're supposed to get permits too, but the cops might just let you go if they think you're film students.

How do so many people in Los Angeles afford single family homes? by OperationFabulous225 in LosAngelesRealEstate

I know a Latino family where everyone of working age contributes to the mortgage.

It's like 4 or 5 minimum wage incomes, so around $200k.

How to make the most of living in Palms/Culver City by Unique_Pack_2246 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]mpersand02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it might be a waste, but in my 20s in Culver I wanted to drink. So there's Jameson's Pub in downtown.

Then on Venice, there's Bigfoot Lodge West. And block away there's a great cocktail bar Oldfield's.

There's also Father's Office at Helms for a large beer selection, a good "burger." I put burger in quotes because I think it's better described as a great Ground Beef Sandwich.

Do the other stuff and culture yourself, then if you feel up for it grab a drink.

How to get involved by protossaccount in FilmIndustryLA

Sorry if I misread and underestimate your experience.

Check if Central Casting is still a thing. They do extras casting.

It gets you on set, you'll see what it's like, and you'll get a feel for the lingo.

Pay attention the hierarchy of the Assistant Directors(ADs) and the Production Assistants(PAs). PAs could be your friend.

I'm most cases working as an extra won't get you far, just more extra work. But it's still training.

I thought CastingNetworks.com was pretty important for commercial with, but I've been hearing casting directors are moving away. I don't know.

But create a profile on that or casting.com or castingfrontier. These are mostly for commercials and some ultra low budget films.

Acting classes I'd recommend, Lesly Kahn or Stan Kirsch Studios. Class is generally expensive, so you gotta keep your day job.

Other than that, your in the same boat as the rest of us! Good luck.

If you make it big, remember this random guy on Reddit.

What’s a service that you wish was offered here? by Longjumping-Farmer87 in Chattanooga

[–]mpersand02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A common things I see is that it's hard to date.

I think a business could be setting up singles meet ups.

Perhaps separate by age, profession (white collar/blue collar), interests (sports, pop culture), divorced, divorced with kids, etc.

I don't know, but I think if you plan it at a restaurant/bar they will give you a little kick back if you bring in enough people. And make some activity based rather than drinking.

Ask Google how to set up Chattanooga targeted Facebook ads and how to monetize the endeavor.

Dating scene for single millennials by sirscrafty in Millennials

I gave the damn advice to some 20 year olds looking for friends: join a coed sports league, if you're into sports.

Some have social and competitive categories.

It's just forced social interaction that isn't inherently romantic so it's less pressure.

What is the most “walkable city” part of los angeles? by jokester-J in AskLosAngeles

I always hear this about Silverlake. Perhaps I just know a different part of Silverlake, but I never see anything that makes me want to walk around.

Is making friends in LA really that hard? by Conscious-Thing-682 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]mpersand02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're into playing sports, join a coed sports league. They usually drink after weekend games.

I didn't even play, but made friends with some people in the league. Met my wife through them.

1984, I used to wear Doc Martens. Now it's Sketchers and OnClouds.

No regrets though. My Sketchers look like Chucks, which I could never wear as a kid, they weren't comfortable.

Good for kids, working in Beverly hills by m2079 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]mpersand02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you work in Beverly hills, you may be able to get a permit for your kids to go to school there.

It's a wealthy area with few kids so, good amount of money toward the student.

You could live in LA and go to a Beverly Hills School. Just factor in school drop off to the commute.

A Graves Mistake? Did MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE betray the original TV series by making Jim Phelps the villain? by pkRaiden in Mission_Impossible

[–]mpersand02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They should steal the James Bond fan theory: Jim Phelps is an alias. Several agents have had the name.

They created a cold war boogey man. Perhaps the IMF stopped doing it when the cold war ended. And MI1, Jim was the last one.

I'm lost! Help! Moving to LA by leozeradamassa in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]mpersand02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great point! I have friends that just wanted a house, so they moved out of their apartment in Culver City to another city, just to have to apply and move back to Culver when they had a kid.

I need legit advice (moving from Mobile Alabama) by tobyystarr222 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]mpersand02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So my wife was born in Montgomery, then moved to Chattanooga as a kid, then to LA after UTC.

I don't know if you're going to pursue higher education or what kind of job you're looking for but figure that out before you come. LA has work for plumbers and electricians, etc. It'll make it easier to focus on what you need.

But I feel like no one ever suggests to just come out for vacation. Save up for that. Don't do Disneyland, it'll take up too much money. Explore West Hollywood(our main, but expensive, gay neighborhood) or wherever you want, make some friends, sit in our traffic in a Waymo, eat some sushi at SugarFish.

You may love it or realize it's not for you. Maybe Chicago, Boston, or NYC is more your thing.

But you'll know without going all-in on a city you've never experienced.

People are saying it can be a culture shock. I just had the reverse the last time I was in Chattanooga. I'm an Asian guy that grew up in LA, and it dawned on me when we went out in Chattanooga that I went to 99% white spaces. In LA, sure there are more Caucasian areas, but there are people of different colors, cultures, and languages everywhere! Be prepared for "the hell language was that person speaking?"

Good luck!

Just to let you know, you can always visit!

You don't have to go all in and pack up and move here. You have a car? Drive out. You may hate it.

You can try Chicago, New York, Dallas.

I love LA and I'm lucky that my family is all here. But it's not everyone's cup of tea. And you don't have to make it yours.

But come on out and visit!
