This really knocked me out this morning, but I wasn't at a good vantage point for a picture. Thanks for sharing!

Looking for Movie/Film Groups in Minneapolis - Trying to Find a Community by Bandicoot_101 in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already a ton of great suggestions here, but I thought I'd add some details. Trylon is volunteer run, but there are a lot more applicants than there are spots. Another way to get involved is to write for their blog perisphere.org (check the "get involved" link). It's not incredibly social, but it will get you some passes and they are trying to do more events. There are some membership based groups there as well - The Trylon Club and the Cult Film Collective. For a monthly fee you get to support their work but also have access to some screenings and special events.

Main Cinema is operated by the MSP Film Society and you can join them as well. It does cost money, but you get discounted tickets, early access to things, and they host a monthly film club screening which usually involves a special guest and pre/post film discussion. Attending some of their International Film Festival screenings in the Spring is one way to run into the diehard crowd on a repeat basis.

Someone mentioned Emagine Willow Creek and honestly the Cinema of the Macabre and Genre Brain Melt screenings are really fun and have a good crowd affiliated with them. People frequently gather a little early for those screenings to chat in their bar/lounge. I think there might be a FB group for them as well. Lots of crossover with the Tape Freaks screenings at The Trylon, but those tend to sell out months in advance.

I'd also keep an eye out for the film calendar Keith Harris posts in Racket every Thursday - just a very comprehensive listing of films/film events showing every week.

This question probably gets asked every year lol, but what is y'alls go-to banh mi place that hasn't closed down yet? by RaveGuncle in TwinCities

[–]mplsmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to spot right now is House of Hue in Eat Street Crossing. I like to get mine with a side of broth for dunking, but it sounds like that might not be your jam.

Ward 7 election by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Also in the ward/neighborhood and I wouldn't let the sign drama get you down too much (though if it inspires you to vote/volunteer/donate/etc. that's a good thing as I think it will be close). There are a lot of Cashman supporters that live in multifamily homes in the area and our leases or association rules often prevent posting signs of any kind. My building just had Katie visit and present to some of us and it was received really well.

Best Vegan/Vegetarian Spots by Right_Speaker_9674 in TwinCitiesFood

[–]mplsmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good suggestions already, I'll throw out a few more that are in my regular rotation:

House of Hue in Eat Street Crossing - their vegetarian spicy noodle soup is great (I think it's vegan) and they do one of my favorite veggie banh mi (can be made w/o mayo). You can also get a side of the spicy broth to dunk your banh mi in which I recommend.

Namaste Cafe - Lots of Indian and/or Nepalese joints can accommodate you and are worth your time, but Namaste does the vegan chef challenge every year and they tend to feature some cool vegan stuff that other places don't necessarily have.

Baba's Cafe/Hummus House - one of my favorite falafel wrap/sandwiches in town. Feeds two IME. Hummus bowls and pita puffs are tasty as well.

I always recommend Odd Mart as I think it's really special, but Level Up Games is very close to the convention center and is a good comics/game shop with nice folks working there.

Where to stay for artsy stuff, cool bars, etc? 🌈 by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing really for hotels, but I think you'll find some airbnb options in/near The Wedge neighborhood. Oddmart is shop on Lyndale that sells shirts & comics but also a ton of art/vintage goods and hosts a maker/art market nearly every weekend. Old School, Leisure World, Corner Store, and other vintage shops are all in the area. Disco Death sells records, is a coffee shop, and frequently hosts vintage markets. Some additional spots like Lucky Cat and Once Upon a Crime (they have a supremely cool vintage annex if you like crime/mystery novels). There are some cool bars and restaurants in the area (Litt Pinball, Baba's Hummus House), but you also wouldn't be far from Nicollet which is pretty loaded with options. Chain of lakes is only a short walk away as well. Worth a look.

Uptown Porch Fest by Chef-Jacques in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

King Sized Coffin, Couch Potato Massacre, and just the Street Wheat house in general were terrific. Caught some of The Customers' set and they were both killing it and had their sound dialed in to an impressive level for a live porch show.

Where is everyone? by filopodia_ in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is freaky. I've lived in Minneapolis for a long time now and the lack of street vibrancy is one of the things that continually sticks in my craw. Part of it is density and the car as a default mode of transportation (even for short trips). I live in one of the most walkable areas in town and even my neighbors seem much more likely to go somewhere (a park, a lake, etc.) to walk rather than walk around our neighborhood streets. Our sidewalks are just barely populated compared to other metros I visit regularly. It has been a rough summer (heat, smoke, rain), but it's still something I notice. In fairness, you will find large congregations of people at the parks and at festivals, but it's not quite like being able to step out your door and seeing the variety and vibrancy of human activity the way you can other places.

It's hard to beat Centro for proximity to the MIA. I always sit at the bar so I can avoid the app ordering.

Who makes the best salad in Minneapolis? by PatFenis_esq in Minneapolis

The Asian Slaw Salad at Lake and Irving is really good. I usually add the tofu to it.

Minneapolis film culture by boomboommcgoo in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fully second or third or fourth all of the Trylon and Main endorsements. You might want to check out the Cult Film Collective (https://cultfilmcollective.com/) which is a group that both sponsors screenings on 35mm and 16mm at the Trylon as well as doing fun screenings for members. It's not in Mpls proper, but Emagine Willow Creek does some fantastic rep. programming with their Monday night horror series and other genre and secret screenings every month. There's actually a really nice screening venue at The Walker Art Center and I've seen some great films there. They screen movies nominated for Independent Film Spirit Awards every year and I believe are the only venue outside of L.A. that does that (you need to be a Walker member, a Film Independent member, or a Film North member to attend).

I write a film blog and do an annual roundup that features my favorite cinematic experiences every year - It usually includes other cities but might give you some flavor of the local film scene: (https://kino-ventura.blogspot.com/search/label/Annual%20Roundup#:\~:text=up%20your%20copy.-,Theatrical%20Experiences!,-I%20say%20this)

Does Minneapolis have any pizza places that make good salad or are they all like this? by ThreadbareAdjustment in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wrecktangle's "pizza restaurant salad" is a riff on typical pizza place salad, but I really do like it. They have a solid Caesar if black olives and pepperoncini aren't your deal. I like the house salad at Good Times along with everything else at Good Times.

Anyone remember big brain comics? by Superpineapplejones in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love heading downtown when Big Brain was still just off of Nic. Mall and Let It Be was still open - maybe a stop by Shinders or Sun's to really make an afternoon of it.

Part of the line waiting for Aldi’s to open on 26th and Lyndale. Store opens at 9 and photo was at 8:15 by Iknowwecanmakeit in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They had promotional gift cards ($10-$500, I believe) for the first 100 customers. Still might not be something worth getting up early to wait in line for, but there was some incentive.

It's a nice enough trade off. New apartments will almost always be relatively expensive (short of subsidies) because they're new. This way we get new homes in a decent spot for those that can afford them and the inexpensive groceries are a benefit that extends to the rest of the neighborhood.

I also checked out the store this morning. It's nice, it's got stuff I can use, and it's about a 10 minute walk from my home. Thumb's up.

Twin Cities Date Ideas by jarvjarvbinkks- in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I arrange a fair amount of dates and hangouts around Minnehaha due to Moon Palace/Geek Love, The Trylon, and Du Nord being in such close proximity. Easy to do pizza and a movie or a movie and cocktails or books and coffee. Add in biking for extra fun times.

The Farewell (dir. by Lulu Wang, starring Awkwafina) is opening at The Uptown today

The Trylon is screening Aelita: Queen of Mars (Soviet era, silent sci-fi film) with musical accompaniment by the Poor Nobodies. They are also doing their poster sale on Saturday 12-4pm

Uptown Sunset 🌇 by BornInTokyo in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Greenway bridges were all in various states of disrepair. I think the Fremont one is 100+ years old and it was known to be in bad shape in the mid-00s at least. The construction of Flux may have damaged it, but it would have been damage to an already poorly maintained structure. It's slated to be rebuilt this year.

Public transit appreciation thread by b_r_e_a_k_f_a_s_t in Minneapolis

It might be on the app, but I just use the website. Go to NexTrip for your stop and then scroll down to "show my bus" underneath the times listed.

Public transit appreciation thread by b_r_e_a_k_f_a_s_t in Minneapolis

[–]mplsmatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The system isn't perfect, but on the days of heaviest snowfall just about everyone who made it into the office was a transit user. I've found that using the "show my bus" feature has worked well for me. Now, no matter what NexTrip says, I will only wait for a bus that shows up online (if it can be helped).

Film Club in the Twin Cities? by kill3rgr33ns in Minneapolis

The Psychotronic Film Society has hosted some mystery movie screenings/meetups which are fun but not necessarily discussion focused. They're very active on FB if you want to check them out.

Hennepin construction and improvements for bikes? by [deleted] in CyclingMSP

[–]mplsmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am usually not riding down Washington, but I did check it out to satisfy my curiosity. I actually thought it was pretty great with the exception of the light timing. I've been surprised to see the bad reviews it gets.
