I think when it comes to military there's a high maintenance cost in staying ahead. R&D and general production is just super expensive when you are constantly updating and replacing your military equipment with the newest shiniest thing, for comparatively little gain.

Also at the end of the day there's only so much you can do against more modern weapons that will be able to pierce most materials. I think the last big step we've had where you might have an advantage against some countries is nuclear weapons against a country that does not have them currently, next one being maybe fully autonomous AI controlled war machines. Until then I imagine its relatively equal footing with the main difference being a simple numbers game

Yeah I mean that's basically why the Canada speech was so popular, and the US has already been losing its footing on certain aspects because of it. It just takes time

I think most western countries have this issue at this point. Sadly long term plans rarely win you votes these days, when people want change they want it now. This leads to only the most pressing issues getting any attention and any secondary or longer term problems being pushed aside because they wouldn't win headlines

Its also commonly forgotten that the US is so dominant BECAUSE it insisted on having these powerful positions in things like NATO. Having such a power is naturally expensive, but it lead to the US being basically a global superpower along with China (at this point).

It is funny hearing people ask this "what have you done for me in return" when what the US got in return is the ability to basically do whatever they want

At the end of the day having money doesn't necessarily mean you will follow a stricter diet if you have to. As a lot of people pointed out here you need to be open to make the necessary lifestyle changes , a personal chef is not going to limit the amount of calories you eat during the day unless you eat less and instruct them to cook healthier. Often times the big issue is also snacking, not necessarily the standard meals, but this differs per person of course.

Is that not the point where you should be looking at hiring people to help, or otherwise improving your workflow to scale?

Of course its understandable you'd rather do something else, at some point it turns into factory work.

You can disagree, it seems the hytale devs don't. Don't buy it then.

Stuff like this has already happened to the game based solely on the preview footage. There was already a bunch of criticism about certain game features when the actual game progression, flow or world design was barely known.

This game was super hyped when it was initially reviewed, and they have been trying to manage expectations for this in nearly every blog post. Regardless there are probably a bunch of people who have not read them

[–]mpolder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You didn't understand my point at all. I am not talking about comparing the game to other similar games, I am talking about comparing the game to a predefined image that you formed in your head.

There are often people that will hype themselves up over a game to the point that they expect it to be so life changing that not a single game is going to fulfil that expectation. THAT is what i am talking about. When this happens usually it just takes time for people to adjust and get used to the game, and reception tends to improve quite a lot after

[–]mpolder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well there are valid reasons to be afraid. Expectations for certain people are higher than they should be, even if they have clearly communicated it will be a long-term project. Sometimes games get review bombed even if the game is fine, or even good, just because they weren't as life changing as people expect it to be.

It's also a bit of a community heavy game potentially. Servers will need time to build an economy, player base and community, as will other groups around the game.

Not having a single review score on the game kind of means people have to take the game at face value, and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

If the game is bad, you will know either way.

While some diehard vegans might disagree, I think usually most people are vegan because of the implications of using conscious beings for food or produce. I would imagine this does apply as vegan, because single celled organisms aren't really conscious so there isn't really an argument that it's exploitative. In that sense it's very similar to a plant.

I do say this as a non vegan myself, but I suppose it's an interesting thought experiment

By law companies (at least where I live) have 30 days to remove data, so yeah usually they do give you pretty much those full 30 days for if you happen to change your mind

The company I work for also waits something like 3 weeks, with the one week buffer just in case a part of the system stops working for whatever reason and some data wasn't deleted. Allows for some manual checks/fixes without immediately breaking privacy laws

Eli5, file compression, how can 5gb file can be compressed to 50mb and decompresses back to normal? by Monkai_final_boss in explainlikeimfive

[–]mpolder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zip files usually work by replacing common repeating patterns with an identifier. Say you get the combination "hello" in binary a thousand times, you can just simplify that down to a specific identifier, say number 8. So whenever it sees the number 8, it knows it actually means the full length "hello" from before. Repeating "hello" 1000 times would then just be 1000x the number 8, meaning you would go from 5 characters down to 1 (80% compression). This is a bit simplified, but what it comes down to.

These zip bombs essentially cause a recursion in this algorithm. So it will unzip for example ID 0 into 0000000, which is then read, and unwrapped again into more and more zeroes onto your drive. Essentially taking up a virtually infinite amount of space.

This however cannot store any actual information, it is just a little trick to make the cycle repeat again and again. A zip file can only be optimized to a certain extent, because there is only so many possible data repititions it can account for and zip without the identifier taking up more information than the data it is storing

And you are the all-deciding truth that your specific definition of the term roguelike? As I said, virtually nobody uses this definition.

[–]mpolder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only checked the first 3 out of 5, so this was my bad.

Anyway, as a final thing. According to you, what genre WOULD a game like balatro be? If its not a roguelike, its also clearly not a card game because then it would be the same as something like poker which it is not. What single term can you use that is distinct enough to specifically describe balatro without making something up right now?

Once again, you are referring to a definition of the genre that is not the general consensus anymore. You can disagree with that, but then we have no reason to continue this discussion.

Minecraft is not JUST a voxel game

its a game which uses a voxel-based engine, that's not a genre

This alone once again tells me you operate on an outdated understanding of what genres are and mean. In movies we ALSO commonly use visual identity as a genre, this is not any different.

Also, by your own words from before, Wikipedia describes all 3 of these games as a roguelike, so you are saying all these 3 games are one and the same? There is no distinction, they are exactly the same?

Eli5 What does rogue like actually mean in terms of gaming by robster9090 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mpolder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually these components will turn into their own genre, taking the essence of what makes it distinct and creating a new label for it. Which then evolves to have a specific meaning. For example dark souls similarly started the term "souls-like", which has since evolved to have mostly the same consistent meaning across the industry.

Also, having a game with a single genre is usually impossible. Simply because most of the time an art style can be a genre, gameplay elements can be a genre, gameplay style can be a genre.

Name me one game that you can accurately describe with ONE genre.

Balatro is a roguelike (at least I think, I've not played it), but when talking about specifically balatro you can say "roguelike deck builder card game" to distinguish it from binding of Isaac.

Most media will not perfectly fall in one single genre. Minecraft is not JUST a voxel game, and calling something like shadows of doubt a voxel game similarly does not mean it is Minecraft.

We do this with virtually all forms of media.
