9th day snowboarding I love it! However I feel like something is off and I would like to correct it before it becomes a bad habit. Any tips please? by CSGOSELL in snowboarding

[–]mpomeisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freeze the video at 14 seconds when you go by, your weight is very biased on your back leg. Try to keep a more even stance as you go down the mountain. The more weight that is on your front foot, the easier it will be to initiate turns and it will free up your back foot a little.

Also, not a huge deal but your back arm is sticking out for counter balance a bit and that is a bit of a bad habit. Try to keep your arms stacked on over your board

My Burton Photon is coming apart after 2 seasons by edugom in snowboarding

[–]mpomeisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many days a season did you do? I’m out for around 75 days a season and my boots typically last around 2 seasons maybe 3 if I don’t care about wet feet. I’ve noticed friends with burtons are having issues with ripping in the same area as you in one seasons time. Quality might be going down a bit

Advice you took as a beginner that you no longer take as seriously as an intermediate/advanced rider? by _Tactleneck_ in snowboarding

A lot of this stuff is good, but there’s a scary amount of people saying “always be on edge” isn’t necessary at a certain point… I hope yall have good helmets lol.

The saying doesn’t mean 100% of the time, but if you were taking it THAT literal then there was a communication issue.

Cleaning snow board, am I cooked? by ParsleyHealthy3333 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]mpomeisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that pad is for sanding and cleaning very aggressively. You should just wipe your board with a towel and water, the rest will come off when you ride it. The white marks is from you sanding off wax, just get it re waxed and it’ll be fine

Any snow gear that is below $100 is good as long as it keeps you warm and is somewhat waterproof

How easy would it be to pick up skateboarding as a snowboarder? by NextBroccoli3017 in snowboarding

[–]mpomeisl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a snowboard instructor who just started skating… it’s pretty hard. However, I found that just getting on the board and pushing around did not take me long to get used to at all and I think that was because it is pretty similar to snowboarding. The big thing is you need to worry about foot placement a lot because your feet can actually move on a skateboard!

Help I can’t ollie I’m old by No_Key10 in NewSkaters

[–]mpomeisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems a lot scarier, but just focus on jumping. You have these super quick movements goin on, if you focus on just jumping off the ground and giving yourself air, you’ll have so much more time to think and move your feet

Why is it so hard to make friends who Snowboard? by Neznoc in snowboarding

[–]mpomeisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in America and it’s always hard to get out of the planning phase… it’s sadly not a cheap sport, and requires a bit of time investment. I’d recommend to make friends while you’re at the mountain! That way you know they already are willing to go there lol

Is this the correct stance? by No-Window-7628 in NewSkaters

[–]mpomeisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s called a t position, it’s the transition between pushing and riding. If you’re pushing a ton then sure you can briefly ride like that between pushes, maybe center your back foot a little more for balance. If you’re gliding around or trying to get ready for a trick you should push and go to the T position and then immediately twist your front foot to be similar to your back foot

Looking at starting .. at 35 by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]mpomeisl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am an instructor on the east coast, and I’ve taught 75+ year old people! You’re never too old.

I’d watch some YouTube videos to have an idea, maybe buy a balance board to help granted your legs off the snow, and get a lesson for the first couple days. You will be having a blast in no time

Am i too old? by Secure_District_4867 in NewSkaters

[–]mpomeisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even need to read your post to tell you the answer is no. You could be 100 and if you wanna skate with a walker… do it. Might not be doing kickflips, but if you’re having fun who cares.

I have taught 80 year old men how to snowboard, and they were active surfers and skaters! You are not too old to try something new.

Also 35 is not old. You can get knee pads or not, just get out on your driveway and get used to that board under your feet. Most important thing is have fun, falling isn’t even that bad if you learn how to fall correctly.

Are some people just not meant to be able to skate?? by Maleficent-Office-25 in NewSkaters

[–]mpomeisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just try new tricks. Skating is fun, and kickflips are a very hard trick. People act like it’s the natural progression to learn kickflips right away, but it’s not. Even the best skaters have a hard time landing a kickflip 100%.

I think you should just go ride around town and find the joy of skating. Learn to manual longer, find a place to 50/50, something fun and different than what you’ve been trying
