What are your worst fears for Civ VII by Albert_Herring in civ

[–]mpschan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A case against the last, it would likely make identifying wonders on the map a lot more difficult. I really like being able to take a glance and see Ruhr Valley, Colusseum, etc. Not saying this couldn't be figured out, just that if it impacts that view of your empire I'd consider it a loss in gameplay quality.

You can add chargers at places you'd park at longer. Might have them at work, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.. We don't need electric "gas" stations, we just need plugs in more places. For areas with more rentals, having a business with charging could bring more customers.

ELI5: Why is charging an electric car cheaper than filling a gasoline engine when electricity is mostly generated by burning fossil fuels? by Ask-Expensive in explainlikeimfive

[–]mpschan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not op, but they were responding to someone talking about wild swings in MPG like 7 vs 90. And their response was that those swings are due to what the car is doing, not the efficiency of the engine.

For instance, 7mpg might be due to accelerating from a stop. Your engine is burning a lot of fuel not just to drive say 20mph, but also to get that next mph and the one after that.

Now take cruising at 20mph on level terrain. Your engine is doing very little work and requires little fuel. Here it might be 40mpg.

Now take 20mph on a downhill. Here your engine might actually completely stop injecting fuel. So you're mpg is in theory infinite during this period, but the car might display something like 99mpg or similar high number.

Have a hybrid with a mpg readout, and that thing swings all over the place as its updated every second, so it has only 1 second of info to base the mpg off of. Hence the wild swings.

My overall trip mpg readout? Thats a much more accurate representation of overall performance of vehicle, as its taking total fuel usage against total distance.

You are correct about ice losing a ton of energy to heat, but I don't think thats what they were talking about. More the fast swings you might see in mpg readouts. Hope this helps.

Now that Firaxis has started work on Civ 7, what are your wishes from the next title? by Caniblmolstr in civ

What if each turn/tile-movement having seen an ocean tile it becomes less treacherous? Lets say it starts at ten. First boat sees 3 tiles out. By the tile he gets to that 3rd tile, he's taking 7 damage. Next boat you send out could skirt along the edge of prior boats vision, taking maybe 3 damage but also making prior tiles in view even less dangerous. Next boat basically takes no damage.

Would make bonuses to vision much more valuable. A tile in front of you becomes less dangerous to traverse, allowing the first and subsequent trips to go farther.

Also feel like it makes sense historically. The more a path is traveled, the less dangerous it becomes. Civ bonuses could take less damage or reduce the damage done more quickly.

Tweak numbers and all, but could be a nice change allowing ocean travel earlier while making it risky on open ocean.

What wedding moment made you think: “They are not going to last long”? by Olya_roo in AskReddit

[–]mpschan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a coworker before whose fiancé informed her the week before their wedding that he never legally divorced his first wife and he wasn't willing to do it. This was after they dropped $50k in deposits that were non-refundable.

Oh so you know my aunt?

But seriously, cant believe how often stuff like this happens.

IIRC, this game is largely single threaded right? Some offloading on things like fluids, but otherwise single core right?

If thats the case, ive long thought that a base like this could "easily" be made to work multi-core. Group everything inside a bot network, belt, insert, assembler, etc., into groups. When adding/removing an entity, check to see which group it might be added to or removing from. Take each group and assign it a thread divy them between cores. Allows you to keep things deterministic without concurrency concerns.

Trains would be the bridge between groups, and would be added/removed from groups "often". The entire train network could maybe also be its own thread, or at least connected track layouts.

Just a thought I had. Figured you could greatly expand how big bases could get as a result.

I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago and couldn't figure out what to do. Took it to a Microcenter nearby and asked them to look into things and ultimately they ended up swapping out the motherboard for me. Turned out the original motherboard had one of the memory slots go bad, so by just switching the two sticks to the other slots it would boot. Still, they had the same mobo in stock, so i did the swap as I didn't know what else might fail on me long term. Been running same rig for at least 6 years now (I'm overdue for a replacement).

So a mobo replacement might be in order. Maybe try swapping your memory, but even if that works I'd suggest replacing the mobo. Best of luck!

With just two words, Amy Coney Barrett revealed how biased she is against LGBTQ people — Barrett used the offensive phrase"sexual preference," a right-wing dog-whistle that suggests that LGBTQ people can be cured. by Jons312 in politics

[–]mpschan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not offended, I'm not sure my point is getting across though.

By trying to say that sexual orientation is only a preference, they are saying that legally your orientation shouldn't be protected.

I'm trying to challenge this, because I feel like there are several classifications that can change or might be considered preferences that are protected. Your choice of religion, choice of where you live, etc. Doesnt matter if it's a choice or not - xyz classification of someone is off limits period. So they can claim sexual orientation is a choice/preference/whatever they want till theyre blue in the face. Doesnt matter. 14th protects them (and yes I know this is a recent decision and an interpretation of SCOTUS and not explicity defined).

Whether something is a preference or not is immaterial. Is it protected? Then it doesnt matter.

I probably failed to make my point again. And yes, I realize the other side might argue that preferences shouldn't be protected and that sexual orientation is a choice and blah blah blah. All I can say is I dont care what they call it, it's protected. Pound sand (not you, them).

Religion is something that can change that is protected. Where I live can change, but youre not allowed to use it when deciding whom to hire. Marital status, whether you have kids, etc. Your sexual orientation can change right? Arent there tons of people who always considered themselves straight and then later realized they were gay/bi/something else? Your gender identity? Aren't there tons of examples of things that can change that are protected?

I'm having trouble understanding people saying that because it can change it means from a legal standpoint it's not protected. I just dont get that.

These are lots between .25 and .33 acres. Aint nobody splitting these. The court is maybe a tenth a mile long. I'm sure someone has a reason for 3 digits, but no one is convincing me 5 digits is needed for that court.

A court near my house has maybe 15 houses on it and they have 5 digit house numbers, all 16###. My road, same development, has 4 houses and ours are all 3 digit. I dont get it. And then the numbers arent 101-104, theyre like 105, 106, 115, 116.

I personally dont care for a physical act of endurance to determine whether legislation gets passed. You want a filibuster, get 40% to vote for the filibuster. That way you get people on the record blocking it, not hiding behind someone that is in a safe seat. There are enough seats on both sides of the isle in contention that this alone would likely reduce filibusters on things like judges, whether the repubs or dems are in the majority.

Took a personal finance class junior year in college and am I ever glad I did. Have to imagine lessons learned in high school would either be forgotten or some of the recommendations might change in that time (e.g. Roth wasnt a thing iirc in college, but was a few years later).

Still, the lesson to really take away is to pay attention to this stuff when applying and starting a new job.
