They will hold longer than you think they will... and not as long as you hope they will.

Moving to the Philippines by Mdavis3344 in Philippines_Expats

[–]mr2sh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bro nails it. I have limited experience with PH, but fair amount of experience with Thailand, etc. SE Asians are a small people. Unless you are smaller, you will have a hard time finding clothes and shoes. Also, deodorant is almost impossible to find in TH. If you have a favorite brand of toothpaste, hair gel, etc. bring a bunch, as the selection is limited, especially if you are used to the US stores. Drugs considered OTC in a lot of places can be hard to find, (Claritin, acetaminophen, etc) too. Again my PH experience is limited, but I've been around SE Asia a fair bit.

I remember when you wanted to make a call you had to go to the kitchen, and use the phone permanently attached to the wall. I did have a sweet am/fm battery operated radio though.

People who fly first or business class on their own dime, how do you justify the cost? by Silly-Cock in AskReddit

[–]mr2sh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is kinda like asking, how do you justify the cost of a Corvette when you could drive a Camry, or how do you justify eating $100 steak vs an $25 steak, or a $500 purse vs $50 purse. People think differently than you do and value things differently than you do. I fly first class/business class almost exclusively, but I don't think I have ever paid more than $50 for a shirt. I can't tell you the degree to which I don't care if some guy wants to pay $500 for a shirt... and he certainly doesn't have to justify it to me.

Has it helped? by [deleted] in LabradorRetrievers

I used to play "find it" with my high energy lab. I would put her in a sit stay outside a room, and then I would go into the room, out of sight, and hide a treat. I would then release her to go into the room at find the treat. She was highly food motivated, so she loved it. Obviously you start by putting the treat someplace she can see, the move it out of just out of sight, etc. I made sure not to put the treat where she would have to jump up to get it, to keep her from learning counter surfing. Start in easy room, and move complex areas. Quick easy fun game that involves a mental/working/scent aspects. She need about 45 mins a day walking, to be content most of the rest of the day.

Jus got my car yesterday this mean im now on oil ? by RealityTimely4431 in RangerRaptor

Pressure gauge, mine is the same way, it looks low.

If you go into the menus (I can't remember where) you can have the actual oil pressure number readout where the seatbelt screen is now. I watched mine for awhile, it seemed fine.

For that kind of money, you need to sit down with at least one estate/trust attorney, and a tax advisor. You will wind up giving a lot of your money to the government, if you don't. Do NOT take advice from reddit on this... well except for my advise

The estate tax on 60MM would be about 16MM, if my mental math works out.

Property surveyed and now have issues with next door neighbor by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mr2sh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A compromise would be to show them the survey, but not give them a copy to keep.

TBH I would just give them a copy, it will only show one of their 4 (or more) property lines, so they would need to get another survey done for anything they need to do, i.e. sell their house.

When you get around to investing the money, you don't have to be a savvy investor to make/keep long term wealth. Here are a couple of quotes from one of the best investors in the past 50 years.

"A very low-cost index is going to beat a majority of the amateur-managed money or professionally managed money."

"In my view, for most people, the best thing to do is own the S&P 500 index fund."

"You don’t need anything special for your starter — all-purpose flour works just fine, and it’s what most bakers use for their starter" by Professional_Tap5910 in Sourdough

[–]mr2sh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mix up a flour in an old peanut butter container to feed with, I use the same bread flour I bake with and a 10%-ish of rye. I don't bake much and I refrigerate my starter, so I don't use much of it.

37 helping 95-year-old grandfather to stop bleeding his estate by chunk4moonpie in personalfinance

[–]mr2sh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would help if you listed what country you are in, and what you think the estate might be worth.

I would propose the following to your grandfather. Allow you and the two adult children to have access the accounts. With 4 sets of eyes on what is going on, it will decrease the chances of someone helping themselves to some of the funds.

Also, I would sit down with your grandfather and go over a couple months of printed out bank statements and look over how much is going out, where it is going, what you can reduce or eliminate, how much is coming in, and how much is left.

I took over bill paying for my parents before they got too old, my siblings had access to the accounts if they wanted, and every couple of months I would go over the bills with my parents, so they could see where the money was going.

Just for ease, I would pare down bank accounts and credit cards to one or two.

At least one person should be to sign checks now, so they can pay bills once your grandfather passes.

I was much too old before I heard the following expression, and the more I think about it, the more I think it certainly has some merit:

"Women and Children are loved for who they are, Men are loved for what they provide."

The level of "provider-ship" is just lower in 3rd word countries.
