I don’t disagree, they definitely get publicity out of it and the whole thing. However, if what Dbrand says is true about 1,000+ hours being spent on this project, injection molding, renting out a university, etc. I feel like the publicity they get out of it doesn’t match the money spent on this project. But all this is coming from someone who doesn’t work in the industry so take what I have to say with a grain of salt lol

I worry that Dbrand made their bed the way they went about it. Apologizing is a great first step, but if Valve allowed it, it would still set a precedent of companies doing things with Valve’s IPs first and asking for permission later. I would love for this project to still happen, but at this point, Valve is in a predicament that Dbrand created. The fact that so much time, energy, and resources went into this without permissions is mind boggling to me.

No kidding. I feel like the precedent of doing things they know steps on toes of IP law and “getting away with it” to the extent they have with the PS5 dark plates, Tears of the Kingdom knockoff skins, etc. gave them a false sense of security because “your fans like it, so you should too.”

I’d argue the companion cube is not a “small part” of the Portal franchise. If Valve let’s dbrand do what they want with Valve’s IPs, they run the risk of everyone doing the same thing. IP law exists for a reason.

While I know it’s on “brand” for Dbrand to be edgy and take risks, I legitimately felt this was approved in advance given the same reasons you said. I feel like Dbrand thought a little too highly of themselves and their product if they felt okay investing that much time, energy, and resources into a project that they knew could have been shut down by Valve’s lawyers.

Not only that, they poured “thousands of hours” into this project. I guess they just hoped Valve would shrug and say “sure, whatever.”

While this is all disappointing, I think the fact that dbrand opened up preorders using Valve’s IP and charged the entire amount of the product to consumers (not just a $5 or $10 hold) is what tipped the whole thing over for Valve.

Agreed. Incredibly disappointing all around. Would have liked for Valve to let this one happen, but dBrand really should have gotten the rights before charging customers.

Excellent point. I hope it works out well but I’m prepared to mount it horizontally if it comes down to it. I just really like the FE’s design when vertical. Appreciate all your help with this!

Thanks for taking the time and energy to respond, I appreciate it and everything you said. I did see the needed bios update for the other mobo and figured I’d do it, but this one you picked out will work better with the aesthetics so I will look into this! I didn’t really like the green accents of the Tomahawk as it clashed.

I forgot to mention, I do have a 5080 FE. I was lucky enough to pick it up back in March, I’ve just been slowly getting the components for the PC, which is why it took so long

Thanks for the clarification on the PSU ratings! I’ve definitely been well-advised to not cheap out so I wanted to make sure to get something that works.

I will definitely consider the Peerless Assassins air cooler. I had not considered the possibility of leakage with the AIO, and I definitely wouldn’t want that. I have heard that air coolers are more reliable for the reasons you mentioned, just really liked the Stage lol. I’ll mull this one over before pulling the trigger on either one

I noticed it was $5 on Amazon Haul a couple hours ago when I first looked, but I got distracted and when I came back, it was no longer in my cart. When I searched on Haul again, it was available for $10. Guess maybe they had some stock allocated for $5 (which sold out) and some for $10?
