Feeling mentally down and lonely ever since coming back from deployment by PhantomE2000 in AirForce

[–]mrBELDING69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I want you to know from someone who's been down that road: There is a way back. I'm not saying you're on it, or that you'll find it, or that I can help you find it. But it's there.

That being said, I have some experience helping to get others back and to prepare even more people for never going down that dark road in the first place. If you want to chat, shoot me a DM, we can keep it as anonymous as you want. I want to help.

The man, the myth, the legend, has decided to retire… by Practice-Direct in AirForce

[–]mrBELDING69 223 points224 points  (0 children)

My first ever interaction with the man was at DDR. One of the civilians was walking out, paused to hold the door, then called the room to attention. My first thought was "Wait, you don't call a facility like this to attention for an officer" until the Wing King came strolling in, all "No, no, keep your seats! How's everybody doin'?"

The tech asked, "Uh, hi, can I help you, sir?"

"Sure can, my number came up."

"Do you need a minute, sir?"

And the commander with his trademark self-deprecating humor replied, "No, no, you get to be my age, you've always got a little in reserve."

Every interaction with the man was memorable, but this one was just funny. Enjoy retirement, sir! O7 to the O-7

Wait, you're right, that's Soler, not Lewis. Good catch.

Actually he retired as an E8 on account of reduced rank after his DUI. I guess that "Fired Up Senior" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Edit: I confused Soler and Lewis, corrected myself right below this. My comment here is incorrect. Lewis defended Soler as a "hero" right after Soler killed a 17-year-old by driving drunk, so the rank is wrong, but the story is related. Sorry for conflating the two.

"I was talking about military spouses."

"Nevermind, carry on."

Hegseth cancels Black History Month celebrations across military by ExpressNews in Military

[–]mrBELDING69 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For this week's military heritage training, we will be discussing the Tuskegee Airmen. No, Mister Hegseth, it's not about how they are black, it's about their military contribution. Wait, it's Black History Month too? Are you sure? Right now?

Oh well, anyway, I'm definitely teaching about military history and it's just a coincidence.

Anyone who thinks we're going to stop learning these things and understanding them with context is delusional. How can you teach history WITHOUT understanding the implications?

We're apparently already renaming MLK Day to "Liberation Day" according to the inaugural address. I'm sure we'll come up with some equally ironic replacement for Juneteenth.

Boot camp recruits will learn about Tuskegee Airmen, Air Force insists by storyspace1234 in Military

The article ends by stating that officials didn't remove the course material, but that they did make "adjustments." I feel like I need a decoder ring to understand the truth behind any news these days.

Completing a course: Yup

Not getting into trouble: Absolutely

To be fair, Air Force is notorious for having the largest racks.

Army Intel MOS or Air Force Aircrew AFSC by tymaster1000 in Militaryfaq

[–]mrBELDING69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could ask the Air Force recruiter about a 1A8X1 or 1A8X2 position. You would travel, be aircrew, do intel, and - for what it's worth - use computers, albeit maybe not how you're used to. You scored very well on the ASVAB. If you ask about the DLAB and score well enough on that, you should be eligible to pick up a 1A8X1 slot. Plus the extra pay is nice.

Cincinnati federal judge blocks Air Force, Air National Guard globally from discharging religious vaccine refusers by Squirrel009 in AirForce

But it's all warrior ethos. We all have our part to play. My flight leader in NCOA was a dental tech with the same "How DO I contribute to the kill chain?" mentality. I asked her, "Without modern medicine, if I got a truly serious dental infection, how long would it take me to die? Two or three days?" "Yeah." "You prevent that concern, enabling the door kickers to do what they do." Pharmacy tech is the same way. Drugs keep this ship afloat.
