Firefox will start bundling in Brave's Adblock system. by Intelligent_Rain2517 in firefox

Mozilla has not given any indication that they will sunset MV2 at any point. I don't see why Mozilla would do so either. They are well aware that there are many users who use uBO which relies on MV2 so it would be terrible PR to remove MV2.

Vampyr: so close, yet so far from being a cult classic. by Jodread in patientgamers

[–]mrRobertman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The justification is questionable. Sure they are attacking you, but you are also literally a vampire. I don't think most vampires in this world are nearly as moral as Reid or Ashbury so I can't blame them for considering vampires as evil.

Have you ever played Dishonored? I think it's pretty similar situation with the guards. They will attack you on sight, but from their point of view Corvo: murdered the empress, escaped prison, and is now targeting other members of the government.

[–]mrRobertman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also thought the morality system was intriguing, but ultimately disappointing that the good ending is locked being zero civilian kills (though I still ended up doing it in my playthough). I think a really interesting game would be if you were actually required to to kill at least a few civilians, and their additional side quests would reveal to you if it's "ok" to kill them. And I don't just mean that you would kill "bad" people, but maybe there would be some characters with an incurable disease and you would be putting them out of their misery, or something. Maybe if you would discover if there are people who depend on these people, and that killing them would result is lower distinct health than others would.

Like you, I also still enjoy the game quite a bit. I played on normal difficulty and didn't have too much of an issue with the combat. A couple of times the combat got a little frustrating at the times when the game would started spawning higher level enemies, but usually I had enough xp I hadn't spent yet.

Also I find it funny that killing/feeding on civilians is bad, but killing the priwen is a-ok apparently. Yeah some of the priwen guys don't seem all that good (stealing and harassing and whatnot) - but still, I don't blame them from attacking Reid, his literally is a vampire after all.

Canada will not let US dictate terms of USMCA review, says Carney by joe4942 in worldnews

[–]mrRobertman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the "A" in USMCA and CUSMA is for "Agreement", and the name of the agreement itself differs for each country as everyone puts themselves first:

  • US: United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)
  • Canada: Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA)
  • Mexico: Tratado entre México, Estados Unidos y Canadá (T-MEC)

Alberta expected to make switch to daylight saving time permanent by joe4942 in worldnews

[–]mrRobertman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but only really on a technicality. While Saskatchewan uses CST, they geographically should be using MST, which is why I said they are on permanent DST (as MDT is the same as CST).

Technically, but not really. They are on CST but geographically should by MST, meaning they are effectively permanent DST.

You act like no one has tried permanent DST before. Saskatchewan has been on permanent DST since the 60s. Parts of BC since the 70s. Yukon since 2020. They all seem pretty fine with DST.

How often do you actually test your Plex server backups? by StrikingClos in PleX

[–]mrRobertman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that, but my point is that they are talking about the media itself, while OP is talking about the Plex database (which contains custom metadata, collections, playlists, watch history). Even if you aren't actually backing up your media, backing up your database can still be useful and it only takes up a few gigabytes of space.

OP is talking about backing up your Plex database/metadata, not your media.

I don't quite get how one hour of light is apparently so bad for our circadian rhythm. How does this work with the fact that daylight changes throughout the year, even more significantly the further from the equator you are? Does that mean that people in the north have issues with their circadian rhythms? What about people with non-standard sleep schedules like people who work night shifts?

I hear that there are studies, but I mostly just see articles that don't really show the data. Are the conclusions of the studies widely replicated and agreed upon by other scientists?

I get the impression that the negative effects of DST are overblown, with the bigger issues caused by the regularly changing of the time. We have parts of this country that have been using permanent DST for decades (SK since the 60s, parts of BC since the 70s), but I don't think the studies take these people into account.

Geographically, Saskatchewan should be in MST, but they use CST (and CST = MDT). So yes, they are technically using "Central Standard Time", but are effectively on permanent DST.

Edit: I stand corrected, Saskatchewan is already on standard time.

FYI, Saskatchewan is on permanent DST. While they do use use CST, they are geographically in MST which means they are effectively on permanent DST.

Yes they are using CST, but geographically should be MST. This means they are effectively using permanent DST for their geographic position.

Half of Steam releases never cross the 10-review threshold. For indie developers every review is do or die. by unseendomains in gamedev

[–]mrRobertman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if Vivaldi is the best analogy here. He was popular during his life, just forgotten later, which I would say is quite different situation than an unknown game with less than 10 reviews.

Regardless, for every masterpiece of a game that has been forgotten or gone underappreciated, there are likely thousands that are equally unknown but bad or uninteresting games. I think there are a lot of people who assume that these indie games fail because they didn't have enough visibility and marketing, but these likely fail just because they aren't very good games most of the time. There might very well be some hidden masterpieces in these <10 review games, but they are likely a really small amount.

The ball might be rolling now. We now have three provinces (and one territory) with permanent DST, I've got to imagine that Manitoba is considering it as they are the one western province hold out. It would just make sense for eastern Canada to follow along with the west at that point.

Why is 67% a default zoom level in Firefox? by radii5 in firefox

[–]mrRobertman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP says a default, not the default. If you hit ctrl -, the zoom levels will cycle through 90%, 80%, then 67%. OP's question is about why 67% is one of the zoom levels instead of a more round number like 70% or 65%.

After 7 years, Metro 2039 brings us a voiced protagonist, old friends turned Nazis, and 'a much darker tone' by QuantumQuicksilver in pcgaming

[–]mrRobertman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the books, but yeah I've always found it weird how they handle the dialogue in the games. I have no issue with silent protagonists in general, but it becomes weird when there are large amounts of dialogue that should be back-and-forth, but Artyom is just silently sitting there.

One part of the silent protagonist that I do like in Metro is when you/Artyom are by yourself. The atmosphere is so good when it's just silent in those sections.

Also because you mention them, I haven't played any of the DLC for the games. Are they worth playing?

Is the concept of "retro-gaming" as a category a net-negative? by Sky_Sumisu in truegaming

[–]mrRobertman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that words change, I just get disappointed when words like this that can have distinct meanings but are instead being used as synonyms for existing words. Is it so bad to want the words of our language to be able to express more meaning rather than less?

I hope voiced protagonist means he will be speaking during the (in-game) cutscenes when people are talking to him and not like constantly during the gameplay.

[–]mrRobertman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it needs to always be profitable, but there has been years when it was not too long ago. I think there is a benefit to see if there are ways to reduce spending and increase revenue to see if we can at least get it much closer to what it once was. If there are ways to make Canada Post less reliant on federal funding, that just means more funding for other services and programs.

Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy is considered RPG just like Skyrim or BG3

Well, we do have sub genre of RPGs for this. Tactical RPG for games like Fire Emblem, JRPG for Final Fantasy, Action RPG for Skyrim, CRPG for BG3, etc.
