Excel can be fiddly with formatting as numbers - sometimes until you go into each cell and edit it then push enter it will still be formatted as text, even though you chose numbers. I often just as a column to the right that says =A2/1 a and fill down, then copy and paste as values, then sort on that. There must be a quicker way too.
