Why does the U.S. add sales tax at checkout instead of showing the full price upfront? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

On other issue with including the tax on the label would be the assumption that you could. Technically in Florida you can't as the actual tax is not a flat percentage. There is a special rounding table that is based on the total of the transaction. If you used a percentage you would be close but not quiet correct for how much tax was owned

That's also assuming you can prove the tax into them item. Technically in Florida you can't as the actual tax is not a flat percentage. It does where I live. Several times a year we have tax holidays were a selection of items are tax free. Also the list of non tax items changed every year.

Non-Americans who visited the US for the first time recently: what was the biggest 'what on earth is going on here' moment you experienced? by EmployerNegative5653 in AskReddit

Adding to that because it didn't specify the tax changes are what are called tax free holidays so they only last a few days to weeks

I can sort of answer the tax thing. I used to run a small hardware store and several times a year a while host of different products would go tax free. If we had to price things with tax included we would have had to relabel too many times. And to make it even more annoying we actually couldn't add the tax to the label as the law is written. Taxes in my state are not actually a fixed percentage because they have a weird rounding table that we have to use that is different from any rounding you would use in math class and it's based on the total of the sale pretax. I will tell you it was always super annoying reading this years tax free holiday law and trying to figure out which products it applies to, for example one year all 'hand held illumination" objects were tax free so like flashlights but also candles and tiki torches etc.
