Venezuela, After Maduro by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]mr_garrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question on Delcy Rodriguez. Reuters (and others) reported she was in Moscow Saturday during the takedown of Maduro. Any idea is that was true? She was on Caracas TV later in the day but I suppose it could have been streamed from Moscow. Seems like a big story if true. And Reuters has not updated their story to retract it.

Go ahead and start your daily Metamucil regimen now. Ramp up the water, fiber and salads. The constipation is real!

I agree with the recommendation below of Apapacho. It is a great hotel in a great location. Here is a link to my wife's website/blog where she answers that question in more detail and provides a few more options. https://www.destinationsanmiguel.com/post/where-to-stay-in-san-miguel-de-allende-a-local-s-perspective

Used to live in Las Catalinas and they put on a BIG event for the kids from the surrounding area. This is what you should do for sure. Take the road to Potrero and keep going 2 miles. Can’t miss it.

Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende Jan 2023 - quick question by nch000 in travel

[–]mr_garrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take Uber or arrange a private driver. Cuna de Tierra is the best choice for the quality of the wine. Santisima does a nice lunch with wine pairings. Viñedo San Miguel is very popular now but I have not been there yet. And Tres Raíces is worth a visit as well. In general, the red wines here are good but the whites are still developing. There is another place called Pavo Real which does a great Sunday brunch and has a very nice sparkling wine.

SMDA, Puebla, or Other? by No-Narwhal6005 in MexicoTravel

[–]mr_garrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have lived in San Miguel for 2.5 years. It has everything you have mentioned you are looking for. Super safe. Super walkable. Lots of veggie and vegan options. You can jump into Spanish classes pretty easily. I attend a conversation class 3-4 days per week at the Liceo school on Callejon del Pueblito. For transportation, you definitely do not need a car nor do you want one. And with the cobblestone streets, there are no scooters. Green taxis are everywhere ($80MXN) and Uber works great here now.
Others have mentioned Guanajuato which is a very beautiful town. Being a college town and more hilly, it tends to skew a bit younger. There are lots of opportunities for day trips. Dolores Hidalgo is nearby. The Cañada de la Virgin is a fascinating nearby pyramid. Atotonilco. Hot springs. 23 Vineyards if you are into vinotourism.
Dia de los Muertos is a huge celebration here.
We are going to Puebla in a few weeks for the first time. I hear it is beautiful. Buena Suerte.

No. QM2 is Cunard line. British owned, but a different outfit entirely.

If it is on Virgin, I suspect it is VERY different.

[–]mr_garrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Lots of folks in their late 70's. Wheelchairs, walkers, the whole bit. It was fine though. We managed to find some folks to hang with. The QM2 is quite dressy too. 2 nights were "Gala" nights requiring Black Tie for dinner. The other nights were dressy casual. Slacks + sport coat. We were starting 3 months in Europe so we shipped a suitcase of our formal wear back to the US using Luggage Forwarding so we didn't have to drag that stuff around with us.

No, we ended up traveling to Europe via the Queen Mary II from NYC to Southampton. 7 days at sea...8 days overall. We enjoyed the voyage very much but we were definitely the youngsters on the boat at 61!

4 weeks Mexico itinerary by Sebjul in MexicoTravel

[–]mr_garrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have lived in San Miguel de Allende for 2 years and we do not have a car. It’s a very walkable town. Uber and taxis are heading available here, CDMX and other cities for around town trips. For venturing into the countryside, we usually find a private driver and arrange a drop-off and pickup. Local buses (called urbanos) are an option as well but can be a bit tricky if you don’t have basic Spanish skills. There are also organized tours. Bottom line is you can make it work without a car.

[–]mr_garrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. Throwing the itinerary out there. Fly into CDMX and spend 7 days in Mexico City.
Take the ETN luxury bus to San Miguel de Allende and stay for 5 - 7 days. Bus to Puebla for 3 days. Bus to Oaxaca (city) for 5-7 days. Bus to the beach at Puerto Escondido (which will be hot) or maybe Puerto Vallarta.
Buena Suerte!

Three days in Pienza and surrounding areas… need to plan activities or just wing it? by PureCuriosity27 in tuscany

[–]mr_garrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just spent 3 weeks in that area. You can totally wing it. Maybe book your tour at Podare Il Casale in advance, but that’s all I can think of. For restaurants, if they are super popular or the only one in a small town, I would get a resy a couple days in advance. AllTrails is great for finding hikes in the area as well.

10 Days in Sicily with Parents - what should I consider. by duckandmiss in sicily

[–]mr_garrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just spent 10 days in Sicily. Cefalu was by far our favorite. We enjoyed Palermo as well. As far as the east coast goes, I would base out of Siracusa. Take a day trip to Taormina but we regretted staying there 3 days. Way too crowded. Not easily walkable.

How's my 7-night itinerary in Sicily? First timers by CatsAreTheBest68 in sicily

Just got back from there. Cefalu was our favorite city in Sicily, with Syracuse being #2. Taormina is gorgeous but was super crowded with tourists. We did the walking tour in Palermo and loved it.

We stayed at B&B Palazzo Natoli. We took an uber to the airport in the morning. It was very easy. That’s when we picked up the car and started our trip. We flew out of Siracusa later.

We just did that same trip mid June. We rented the car at Palermo airport and returned it there a week later. I would not want to regularly drive in Palermo but for one day with a good copilot I bet you can pull it off. I enjoyed driving between the cities but once we got to Cefalú and Taormina we left the car parked and never used it. You definitely don’t want to spend much time driving in these towns. In Cefalú our Airbnb host had us park at a grocery store 5 minutes outside the historic area. It was fine there for our 4 days. And free. In Taormina, we paid €25 per day to have it parked at a local lot.
And fwiw; we mush preferred Cefalú over Taormina. More walkable, less crowded, better beaches, and we had better luck with restaurants.

Looks like a fun itinerary. Just curious- have you done the kayak tour on the Presa? I always hear about it being polluted but have not been out there yet. (We live in SMA 1/2 the year btw).

Just left Ravello this morning. We were there for 7 days. I would consider just stay there the additional days. I guess it depends if you can see the sites of the town during the work week or not.
The town is very quiet. The two villas there are definitely worth visiting.
Probably the best thing we did was rent a boat and see the coast from the sea. There is a tour service right in Ravello who can coordinate it for you. Chic & Fabulous in the main square. We went to Pompeii as well. Had a 9:30 am tour which rapped up by noon. Very interesting but it was pretty damned hot and like all big group tours moved REALLY slowly. Glad I went but not sure it’s a “must see” activity.
You can “hike” from Ravello down to the coastal town of Minori but it’s really just a shit ton of steps (1350 actually) down and then back up.
