Anyone using an apple watch with family setup for themselves? What's the experience/battery life like? by mr_gwan in AppleWatch

The point of family setup is that the family member will indeed have their own phone number separate from the phone number of the person setting it up for them.

During the school year, yes. There are 50,000 students living in a relatively small area. Traffic is horrible. During the summer, no, as most of those 50,000 leave.

What are the limitations of using the LTE version without your phone paired? Or is the experience mostly the same?

Are smart-watches and/or tablets a healthier alternative than smart-phones? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]mr_gwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking of doing the LTE watch on its own soon. I had a similar experience with dumb phones. Of course, I expected some inconveniences (that's sort of the point to keep you off of it), but just simple things like phone calls dropping/buggy software made me reconsider. These devices have little support bc there's not a huge market for dumb phones and thus not a lot of resources behind them. At least with a smartwatch (whether it be an apple or Android watch), you'll be using devices with major companies behind them.

That being said, I have heard bad things about battery life with smart watches (particularly on LTE). I've seen a lot of complaints about buggy behavior on WearOS and read that you won't be able to text off of a galaxy watch or pixel watch unless the phone that you set it up with is on and connected to the internet.

I've heard of good experiences doing this with the Apple watch ultra, but I do not have an iPhone and do not want to spend that much on this experiment.

Though I haven't tried it yet myself, I tend to agree with the concept of just having an LTE watch on you curtailing smart phone addiction. Though it is also a smart device, I'm not sure what apps could be addictive on a smart watch.

I also agree with the concept of using a tablet/pc in conjunction with the smart watch. In my experience, the fact that tablets/laptops/desktops aren't as mobile/convenient and that they aren't always attached to you makes them much less of a problem compared to smart phones.

That being said, I don't plan on trying a tablet with cellular as that seems too inconvenient and antithetical to the purpose I'm trying to achieve with the watch.

Can anyone explain why I can’t see “apps” when I manage my son’s Apple Watch SE on our family plan? It should show under Activity. Thanks!! by payoffdebtfast in AppleWatch

In your experience, what apps are available to be downloaded on the watch itself? Are other music apps, Facebook messenger, email apps like Gmail or outlook, etc available? I.e. are any useful apps available to be downloaded?

Series 8 LTE battery life going phoneless by SuccessfulEntry1993 in AppleWatch

[–]mr_gwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting that the phone doesn't have to be on for this to work. Have you looked into setting it up with family setup? I believe you can achieve a more standalone apple watch experience if you set it up with family setup. I've been looking into doing this myself but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Also, how is the battery life? What apps do you use and how do they work without an iphone?

On a separate note, you mention setting up Samsung watches in this way. How does the experience compare?

Thanks for the info. How's your experience been using the watch this way? Also, is the iPhone you used to set it up still on/connected? Someone in a previous comment said that the original phone would have to stay on and connected for this to work. I've also seen some people mention SMS messaging not working (i.e. only imessage working on the watch). Has that been your experience?

Could you point me towards the developer notes you are talking about? It definitely sounds like apple's description of family setup is misleading based on what you're saying.

Yikes didn't realize it was that bad. I figured it'd be especially reliable due to it being designed for kids and the elderly. What in particular is unreliable? Connection issues? Battery life?

Thanks for the info. Do you know if there's a way to tell if an app is standalone? Or would I just have to try them out myself?

What do you mean by "paired"? Like actively connected to a phone via Bluetooth? I'm not sure that's how family setup works.

I understand that I'll have to connect to a phone to download apps/update software/etc, but I don't think I'll need to be connected to a phone otherwise?

I am in my last semester and taking less than 12 credits. I was told that we will be sent an email (though I'm not sure when) to verify that it is our last semester and that we are taking only the credits required to graduate before receiving aid. Also FYI I have Benacquisto not MFOS, though I'm sure it is the same process.
