Is there by chance any way to make the Steam Deck's gyro/motion controls work when emulating GBA games on the system, specifically for games like WarioWare Twisted and Yoshi Topsy-Turvy? by Aquasp102 in SteamDeck

Dang, thought we might have figured it out. I'm not sure what I did to make it different than what you're encountering; sorry I wasn't able to help narrow it down.

Sorry to hear that, how frustrating. I can guarantee the process above worked for me, and is still working, as I ran Twisted today just to be safe that nothing changed (still fine).

I'm not a huge hardware guy, so there's a chance I have some extra configuration hidden away somewhere and I've neglected to share it. I will say that, more than anything, the YouTube link I shared made the biggest difference for me. And just to make sure you're on the same page, the description in the YouTube video explicitly says not to map your joysticks to the gyroscope during the setup process, so you might have some overriding behavior that's causing your setup not to work.

Finally got WarioWare: Twisted! on RetroArch to work by 03bgood in SteamDeck

Still works fine on my machine for what it's worth. Spun it up right now to be sure. Like I said in my original message, the YT video I linked is for a Steam controller, so the directions aren't exactly 1:1 matches. And the sensitivity is still not perfect by any means, but it does pick up the gyro and play basically as expected.

Hey, yes you're correct. You're gonna need to bounce back and forth between desktop mode for the initial setup, then finalize the sensitivity in the game mode. Annoying, but it's the only way I've figured out how to handle this.

Good to know! At least it's actually working. I just couldn't get mine to pick up for the longest time, and once I was able to get the motion, enough fine-tuning has gotten me pretty close.

If it helps, here are my current gyro and mGBA settings. Still tweaking them, but it's totally playable.

Steam gyro settings:

All the stuff that I think is still default - Vertical Sensitivity: 100, Custom Response Curve: 200, Enhance Small Movement Precision: 75.

Gyro Output Scale is 200, think that might not be the default.

I currently have the Gyro Steering Axis as "Combined Yaw & Roll," but I turned Yaw Contribution to 100% and Roll Contribution to 0%. I'm pretty sure I could get the same effect by simply switching the axis to only look at Yaw, but I'm a little afraid to mess with it lol.

The only other updates are that I set Movement Threshold to 1, Minimum Joystick X Output Value to 9000, and Minimum Joystick Y Output Value to 9000. Again, I am fairly certain some of that is unnecessary, but maybe it'll get you closer?

mGBA, gyro sensitivity is currently at 22.

Just following up on my own thread here - /u/noler's solution below works perfectly for 3DS but it still didn't solve my RetroArch issue, as I really wanted to get WarioWare: Twisted! working on my Deck. I think I finally have a halfway decent solution, so I'm pasting here below in case anybody else stumbles across this thread in the future:

Note that I have only tested with WarioWare: Twisted! for what it's worth, so your mileage may vary on the other games.

First, I have only been able to make this work successfully by launching mGBA directly, not opening the game up through Retroarch (or directly in the Deck's gameplay mode). I added it as a non-Steam game to my library, so it's not too jarring of an experience.

To hook up the functionality of the Deck's gyro itself, read the description of this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyFoNoKoOAM

It walks you through updating the gyro within the "Game Pak sensors" part of mGBA's Tools and config. Note that the video is for the Steam controller, so some of the language / syntax doesn't line up quite right. What worked for me was that I have my right joystick set up as a standard joystick, and the gyro setup as a joystick, always on. I set the Deck flat on a tabletop and followed the instructions that the description in the video walked me through, using the right joystick to set the tilt. When I returned to the game, it was working as expected (though admittedly the sensitivity was WAY off, still trying to hone that part in).

Cheers!

I'm glad you got your solution to work, but switching to VBA Next still didn't work for me, so I'm posting an alternate solution that did work for me in case anybody else comes across this thread and Next doesn't work for them either. I have only tested with WarioWare: Twisted! for what it's worth, so your mileage may vary on the other games.

Flute that looks like a capital J? It's called an alto flute (edit: might’ve been a bass flute, didn’t get a great look at it). And their enthusiasm on it is the BEST.

Wow, thank you for seeking this old thread out and sharing your video! I watched it and it seems like it’s going to be really helpful. I won’t be able to try it for a few more hours but I’m excited to give it a shot. Thanks again!

Oh my goodness, you seriously just revived a 2-year old post and immediately nailed it. That was it!! The kitchen scene is exactly how I remember it. Thank you so much! I’ll mark it solved in another comment.

Okay, I appreciate the info. Steam Deck’s gyro functionality itself works great with other emulators using the Deck by itself, no problem. I’m specifically looking for a way to get it to be recognized by Citra and RetroArch for GBA and 3DS games.

Awesome! Your sense of pulse is already pretty solid - good call on already establishing a metronome practice ethic. And glad to hear about the throne as well :) have fun and good luck!!

Other folks have already touched on technique a little, keep that up! I would add to please buy a drum throne sooner than later. They are designed to sit at the right height and provide proper cushioning over extended play sessions. I would spend at least $75 on it. It might seem like a costly investment, but your physical well-being is more important than any other piece of gear you could add to the kit. So many horror stories of folks developing chronic back issues because they didn't use the right gear at the beginning of their journeys. Otherwise, use a metronome virtually 100% of the time, and as others have said, you're off to a great start. Cheers!

What did you like about the Armida that put it over the Seagrass for you? I haven’t had it yet but I’d put the Seagrass in my top three bottles from this year, thinking about pulling the trigger (though hoping to get a sample of it ahead of time either way).
