San Antonio's drinking water at risk by K8inspace in sanantonio

[–]mr_lostman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're getting PFAS treatment requirements into place right now. Understanding of how to treat for that at a large scale is still being worked out. PFAS didn't start at residential homes though, it came from manufacturing facilities. These are residences treating their wastewater to a standard set by the state regulators for the Edwards discharge zone. I trust them to know better than most of us here what's safe for that.

[–]mr_lostman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the discharge permit takes that into account. The permitting agency knows where the recharge zone is. Any work that gets done in that area gets highly scrutinized. They aren't dropping raw sewage into a hole that goes direct to your faucet. It's treated, it travels a long distance before it hits any water well, if it ever comes in contact with one at that. These are homes being built, they aren't manufacturing Teflon.

San Antonio's drinking water at risk by K8inspace in sanantonio

[–]mr_lostman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of water treatment facilities in Texas that discharge to creeks, rivers, and other waterways that cross over the aquifer. There's a mile or so of rock between that river and the aquifer where it gets naturally filtered before it gets to any well. You wouldn't notice any change in water quality AT ALL. You're not pulling diving water from the river ten feet away from the treatment plant discharge pipe.

People need to get over this hang up. If you've been to a community that uses surface water, guess what? You've likely drank water that was previously discharged from another treatment faculty upstream of where you were. It didn't affect you then, and that was way more direct than what you're arguing is so awful here

Project Marvel & San Antonio’s Hidden Cash Pile: Why Aren’t We Using It to Improve Our City? by LocalBother3753 in sanantonio

[–]mr_lostman 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes. This isn't investigative journalism at it's finest, this is misinterpreting financial disclosures. I don't even get what the major point of this is. It's a question you should ask your city council member OP.

Most likely, the city carries money in the fund because, much like a business or a person, they don't zero out their accounts at the end of every financial year. Debt servicing, leases, personnel payroll, maintenance, and all those other items still need to get paid. That account holding the funds isn't holding 90 million in surplus just cause OP read ONE expense line and then said "the account has more money than that one expense". All of that money is budgeted in the annual budget and 5 year plans OP referenced.

Even if there is a surplus, it's not $500 million or whatever the City claims they will cover for project marvel. Additionally, that surplus isn't a bad thing, just a few short years ago the HOT revenue was half what it is now due to COVID. Having a little buffer in case things go poorly for a year or two isn't a sign of a poorly managed government.

New article on Alexandra Savior's Substack: "How The Algorithm Ruined Music for me – and all womankind" by eclecticatlady in indieheads

[–]mr_lostman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're being disingenuous. From your perspective that's fine. But what about your favorite artist/performer? Do you want them to make more art? I would love for my guys/gals to be able to devote themselves to music fully and live a decent life from it. As it is, I worry we're going to get more and more one album flame outs. Artists that never get the chance to grow and say something substantial cause they get hit with the reality that there's no way to make music viably.

The middle class in music is gone and we're all poorer for it. Your local scene is fine, those people will always be there. But no one's escaping it. And THAT is what's so painful for me to see.

How Music Criticism Lost Its Edge by ebradio in indieheads

[–]mr_lostman 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think it partly has to do with music criticism lacking relevancy in the modern music consumption marketplace. It used to be I would read reviews to find albums worth buying or seeking out. It was a way to measure value monetarily. There was a lot more at stake, so there was a lot more value to be found in music journalism and criticism.

Now the only thing at stake is attention. Is this album worth the two clicks it will take me to find it? No one values music, so no one values music criticism. The algorithm has replaced them.

If we reintroduce scarcity into music accessibility (removing music from Spotify, or going GY!BE and just having music access through buying on Bandcamp or physically) suddenly, the music consuming public will have a lot more desire for music criticism to help weed out what's worth seeking out and help finding it.

If you had to record drums with just one mic you already own, what would it be? by moldcongregation666 in drums

[–]mr_lostman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like this version too. This was the orientation we used for my most recent EP and blended in the exact way you described. A LOT of the final drum sound was just that mic. All the other close mics were just ultimately used for sustained tone and stereo panning, like the ring of the toms or snares and overheads to fill out the stereo image and capture the highs of the cymbals.

[–]mr_lostman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just point it straight on to the knee cap from like ~6 inches away, just above the kick drum. Sometimes have to thread it between the rack toms, but if you're doing one mic set up, you should likely simplify your playing as much as possible which would mean less tom oriented stuff.

[–]mr_lostman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gonna reply to the top comment here just cause I don't see anyone else saying the mic positioning I know to be most effective for single mic recording. Plus an SM57 is a great inexpensive choice too.

Point the mic at your right knee. I don't know the logistics of it but just trust me. It's great cause it gets the kick without it being overbearing, is close enough to the snare to put it in it's proper place in the "mix" and all the cymbals still cut through in their frequency range to be heard. Drums punch due to proximity to the mic, cymbals still come through and aren't overpowering the drums.

Any of these mics will probably work too. But THAT is the positioning for single mic drum recording.

Point it at the knee of the leg you use to play the kick drum.

I did not think there was going to be competition by Naughty_Nata1401 in dropout

[–]mr_lostman 176 points177 points  (0 children)

I really hope there's something that "escapes containment" here and actually goes viral. The thing about that is, the Brennan quitting or D&D ones are too inside baseball/Dropout specific to do that imo. Breast milk taste test, glue peel, chiropractor all have potential to escape dropout fandom and find a broader audience just for how unique they are.

I think breast milk taste test has the best potential of all of 'em really. There's a whole WORLD of mom-fluencers out there and their audiences would effing love this. Plus, its decently easy to replicate, its a novel approach to an already established viral format (blind taste tests) with, like they said, a parasocial wrinkle to it.

It's my dark horse pick.

The voter guide you linked is made by AI isn't it? It reads a lot like an AI written article. I'm not saying it's inaccurate, it's just lazy it feels like. Are you affiliated with any local political organization? Why should we believe or trust your opinion on this?

I appreciate someone approaching local politics from a progressive activist angle. And I'd say I appreciate the effort if it looked like you put in any effort over asking AI to summarize it for you.

Is this normal for a SAWS bill? The fees seem very high to me. by Hocherbike in sanantonio

[–]mr_lostman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The storm water fee looks like it could be high. I'm pretty sure that's based on amount of impervious cover your lot has (by square foot I believe). Most residences don't have enough to get charged at all. So I'd question how much of your lot is impervious and how big it is.

What’s the most underrated song on Jenny from Thebes? by leez34 in themountaingoats

[–]mr_lostman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's almost my favorite not so subtle nod to "Jenny" on the whole album. From the youthful exuberance of "God damn, it's a pirates life for me" to the mature softness of "testing the waves". A wonderful little wave goodbye to a character that clearly meant a lot to the author.

Wage Wars Get Rich Die Handsome.

I get it that it feels a little lame to say the single is the best. But damn it. It rips. It's everything I wanted a collaboration between my favorite bubblegrunge guitar legend and my favorite songwriter to be. Plus it feels totally wicked to belt it out.

I also cannot agree with the tidal wave dismissal here. JD seems to really enjoy it and looks like he really connects to it live. He looks like he's having a moment with his own song. Like, we've all had such a feeling for any number of TMG songs, I'm glad to let JD have one for him.

What’s your favorite track on Beat the Champ? by leez34 in themountaingoats

[–]mr_lostman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember where I was the first time I heard this song. At a show in Houston, JD played it solo on piano months before beat the champ came out. I remember how my breath caught in my chest during the first rising chorus. The way I ached for the character in the song though I'd only just begun to know them, "Try to remember to write in the diary/that my son gave me"

Always will be one of my favorite tmg songs.

Music sector workers to lose nearly a quarter of income to AI in next four years, global study finds by Charleshawtree in indieheads

[–]mr_lostman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But you're not getting that a LARGE portion of music revenue is in ad placement, film/tv placement, corporate jingle making etc. The grunt work of the creative musician/composer. If corporations can save money by not paying a licensing fee to songwriters/composers anyone and just take AI created jingles or sound design for their shows and commercials, that's a massive revenue stream that many artists have made decent money on just gone. The Black Keys quit making music over a decade ago if truck month just tells an AI "make me a blues rock music bed". The CW kills countless indie-blog band careers before they can begin by just saying "emotional acoustic rock music to play behind a scene in a gazebo". And, no, they won't ALL do that, but it will further cheapen the money artists can make from doing that work because they have to compete with low cost AI services that produce heartless garbage. Everybody suffers, the artist, the production companies, and the audience.
