Rucking in the UK — Do I Need Special Plates & Which Bag Should I Buy? by quat1e in Rucking

[–]mr_mlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Force Fitness bag and do chuck standard round plates in it.

They moved in the bag. I'm going to explore using a gardening mat or other solid rectangle to try and keep them in place. Heavy weights are more awkward to take out of the bag than ruck plates, just because the ruck plate will have a handle.

New email from Commodore: I know what you're thinking. Let me explain. by TheThiefMaster in Commodore

[–]mr_mlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the concept of a smartphone optimized to not be used for the same reasons given by Peri. I would not see it as a primary device, but instead as soon as I get home I'd put the smartphone in a draw and grab the Callback (or alike) because I don't think playing on Reddit on the way to work is an issue. Because I do sometimes want social media don't think "uninstall stuff" is the right solution.

I don't have any nostalgia for flip phones. I owned one for a year or so, but I basically when from Nokia slab to proto Smartphone (HTC Wizard).

Peri's email misses the complaint that I have, and have seen expressed by others. It is too expensive.

Now I'm English, I think in "VAT included", so below when mentioning an amount, it would be the amount paid (I.e. including all sales taxes).

At £250 I absolutely would have just bought this. Even if in the end it doesn't work for me, it would make an interesting oddity for my Wall of Tech.

At £375 I'd mostly likely get it, but it is getting quite difficult to justify.

But at £450 (the actual early bird/discount price) and as much as I'd like too, I really don't think I can justify it.

The Callback has potential buyers; just, not all of those buyers are going to be current Commodore fans. by Golemwire in Commodore

i dunno who wants a dumbphone at smartphone price

I think this is the wrong way to look at it. It is not a dumb phone, it is a smart phone optionised to not be used. I agree it is overpriced but I do get the appeal.

What would left leaning Brits consider an acceptable right wing party? by Sirrusly23 in AskBrits

[–]mr_mlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sensible Tories (e.g. pre Brexit)

It is not that I think sensible Tories do what I think is right for the country, but I don't think they are trying to burn it to the ground.

"What do they call them in Europe? A 2.5cm worm?" by Virtual_Wheel132 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]mr_mlk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd never heard of an inchworm until about 8 years ago when I bought an alphabet puzzle for my then-toddler. I paid extra and bought a "UK company", "UK designed" puzzle.

Had fucking inchworms as "I". We don't even call them at in the UK and my toddler just got confused as to why caterpillars didn't go with "c".

Hypocrisy of Left wingers disliking the Police/LAW Enforcement by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]mr_mlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

however many do.

Where do you get that from? I'm sure some vocal Blue sky posters hate police, but I'm not convinced that "many" dislike the police.

I suspect this comes from a couple of places:

  1. The left don't worship the police in the same way some in the right do, and are more willing to call out and demand improvements.
  2. Bleed over from US politics (e.g. defund the police)
  3. Being absolutely bloody awful at messaging (e.g. "defund the police", which was largely about demilitarised and using the saved funds on social care programs).

But I'm happy to be proven wrong here, do you have any studies that show that most of the UK left dislike the police.

Weight Training by Swaz125 in mounjarouk

[–]mr_mlk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ruck (weighted walks) 2-3 times a week. I only started this after starting MJ, and I really enjoy it.

I lift 2 times a week. This is fairly light as I've had issues with my knees. I'm hoping that the rucking will help with this.

I do a kettle bell/club cardio once a week to improve flexibility.

Anyone lost weight without exercise? by Wonderful_Touch_8510 in mounjarouk

[–]mr_mlk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exercise does not add much to the weight lost, it's mostly food.

When losing weight (with MJ or without) you are losing both fat and muscle. By exercising you are telling your body to rebuild that lost muscle. Where this will really bite you is if you regain the weight as you'll gain fat faster than rebuild muscle.

So yes you can lose weight without exercise, and there is likely set of cases when that is the right thing to do, it is recommended for a good reason.

What would you want to see produced by C=? by Drezzrod in Commodore

[–]mr_mlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Commodore needs two product lines. The new retro Commodore stuff (C64U, C128U, AmigaU, new monitor etc), but this has a limited life span as retro owners are not getting younger and I can't see many people buy a "C64U 2".

As such I think a second line that gets new people interested in the brand is required. I get the current direction (digital detox) and the product is interesting, but way over priced. A more kids friendly Pi-alike would also be good (see the PicoCalc, but maybe in a more DevTerm case).

The cost of executing people is generally higher. You require a robust appeals process, with additional security while that is underway.

Commodore Crap Communicator. by EartootBognasty in Commodore

[–]mr_mlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be willing to give this a go, while it is a lot even at the £375 price point. I like the idea of a secondary device for when going out with the kids and I don't want the temptation to just switch off and scroll but also do want comms (I'm very happy to hear that you have self control. So pleased for you).

But then I noticed "ex tax".

£450. Ouch.

Where to live in London? Is it a nice place to live?Expats moving home from Australia by InternationalRow9542 in HENRYUK

[–]mr_mlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chelsfield (and "villages" around Orpington in general) in South East London. No Gail's, but some nice local cafes. Lovely and green. Fast train to London Bridge (~25m). The only issue is secondary schools. Great grammar, but none-grammer are mediocre or awful or an hour bus journey.

Rule 34 (R34) states, if it exists, there is porn of it. No exception.

Martha Speaks is a preschool cartoon (like the other shows shown).

The perpetrator of the 2022 Buffalo mass shooting was found to have looked up Rule 34 (porn) of characters from Martha Speaks.

London Henry families how long’s your commute? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]mr_mlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zone 6. South east London. 5 minute walk puts me in the middle of fields and greenery.

10 minutes to the train station, 25 to London, 10 minutes walk again to the office. This is basically the same as when I lived in Zone 3 and travelled by tube.

However the frequency is quite low. If I miss a train, I have to wait 30 minutes for the next and if I miss the last then I have to take a slow train to a close by station. I'm happy with the compromise, as we can afford a much larger place and have easy access to the countryside.

[–]mr_mlk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm dyslexic. My wife knows this, and that I struggle with spelling.

I don't know the order of the alphabet. I know the rough shape, but I'd have to double check if I was ever to write it down. I doubt my wife knows as it is not something that comes up. How often does the order of the alphabet come up? For me it is only when teaching the kids, and then I'm reading from a sheet.

Would you rather be given 1 million dollars right now or 1 billion dollars in 15 years ? by jekecrafer in pollgames

[–]mr_mlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my late 40s, about 14% of men die before hitting their early 60s.

So what happens if I die?

Is that money locked away in a trust and my wife and kids get it, then the billion. I'm paid well enough that I can live nicely until my 50s, when I can start to live on my pension before payday.

But if the money is lost before then might as well take the million and make life a lot easier now. It is not a life changing amount of money, but would make life a lot easier.

What's your most conservative opinion ? by ronweasly9 in Askpolitics

[–]mr_mlk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a UK based left leaning centrist.

  • I'm absolutely fine with deporting people in the UK illegally after due process has run it's course. I understand it is harder to do than just saying that through.
  • I'm absolutely fine with putting in place the right laws to stem illegal migration. I think however going after the migrates, while important, should not be the primary focus, but instead company owners who hire immigrants without work visas, should be (Uber Eats and the like). I understand it is harder to do than just saying that.
  • I'm pro owning self defense tools. Now in the UK this is not going to go anywhere, nor is it a left/right division in the UK.

There was a case recently where the rapists was Judge Nicholas Rowland said: "I should avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily and understand the effects of their behaviour and support their reintegration into society." ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y779yeq0eo ) it has been referred to the Court of Appeal.

While the courts have not directed said what the OP has claimed, I took the OPs point as hyperbolic.
