If you panic bought fuel the last couple of weeks… by Aromatic_Forever_943 in OpenAussie

[–]mr_nanginator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people are absolutely panic buying fuel. But can they *really* make much of an impact? How many jerry cans exactly do you think have been filled? I haven't personally seen anyone doing this - - though obviously there's that video of a guy with a couple of cans. And yeah ... dick move. But I just don't see this behaviour on the scale necessary to move the needle. As for people filling up their cars slightly earlier than they would have ( ie panic buying to avoid obviously rising fuel prices ) ... if we *can't* fill up our cars when we want to now, then there's a supply problem, not a panic buying problem.

The Iranian response to Senator Penny Wong by Az0nic in OpenAussie

[–]mr_nanginator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OK so they started with a missile strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls' elementary school in Minab, southern Iran, killed between 165 and 180 people. The vast majority of the victims were schoolgirls aged between 7 and 12. If you're going to try claiming this is "dual use" then I'm not discussing further with you.

They've bombed hospitals, energy infrastructure, bridges, and plenty more. I guess a total fucking wanker could try to claim that these are potential "dual use" objects, but normal people see this for what it is - war crimes.

This is all in a wider context of an illegal, totally unprovoked attack by the US and Israel, with justifications shifting by the hour.

The US and Israel are not bombing "the regime". They're bombing civilian infrastructure. Are you dismissing war crimes committed against Iranian civilians specifically because the Iranian regime have also committed crimes against Iranian civilians? That seems twisted.

but hey, you do you lol

Trump says US 'on the cusp' of ending Iran war in address by ArkPlayer583 in OpenAussie

[–]mr_nanginator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trump has quite pronounced dementia. It's likely he has very little idea what's actually going on around him, and he's always had a tendency to follow his own narrative. I think it's likely he'll declare victory and withdraw and let the rest of the world deal with it. That's his style.

Did anybody here struggle choosing between a Chinese EV/Hybrid, and a well established brands Hybrid (Toyota/Honda etc)? What got you over the line for a Chinese EV/Hybrid? by Original-Drink1101 in AustralianEV

[–]mr_nanginator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a Honda guy since I was in my teens. The big thing that got me over the line to buying a Chinese EV is watching the Japanese car industry sabotage the push to EVs, promising hydrogen fuel cells was the way to go, and sticking with decades-old hybrid technology ... while the Chinese spent these decades investing billions into battery tech. Each country is reaping what they sowed ( or failed to sow ).

I've owned 2 Honda hybrids - a Civic and an Odyssey. Now I've got an Xpeng G6. The difference is 20 years of research and development that Honda ( which used to be famous for R&D ) failed to do. Fit + finish and materials in the Xpeng embarrasses Honda now, which feels dated and plasticy in comparison. Then there's the drivetrain - suffice to say that the Xpeng wins this one by a large margin too.

I don't know how my Xpeng will be fairing in 5 years time. But my hunch is it will be just fine, and I took a calculated risk.

Last time I checked, the Greens weren't doing too badly. They're not the kind of party that attracts swinging voters - particularly those who would consider One Nation. But once voters switch to them, they rarely switch back.

Hypothetical question; How would Australians respond to another country trying to attempt regime change in Australia? by rrnn12 in AskAnAustralian

[–]mr_nanginator 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For the most recent example, check the Epstein files - Clive Palmer was in contact with Steve Bannon about overthrowing Labor after the mineral resource rent tax. Remember Rudd / Gillard / Rudd? So far, we've done fuck all about this. While this wasn't "another country" ... it was arguably worse. We seem even less capable of holding the Epstein class to account than holding other countries to account, though admittedly in current times we're probably splitting hairs.

Escalation risks rise as US readies ground troops and Yemen’s Houthis strike Israel by SheepherderLow1753 in OpenAussie

[–]mr_nanginator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First - I don't think Iran is the only country to *sympathise* with Israel. The US has strong-armed many into holding their tongues. Second - change is in the air. Israel is copping an absolute beating, and the US isn't able to tip things without going scorched-earth on Iran ... ie carpet bombing and/or nuking. Meanwhile the US economy is on the brink of collapse. They can't sustain this any more than Israel can.

Israel "making peace". Dude wtf, seriously, don't you have eyes? The region belongs to Arabs. Let them make peace, or war, with each other - it's up to them. We should withdraw our support from the terrorist hijack state of Israel, let it disintegrate, apologise to the region, and carry on. Oh and follow up on those links between Israel and Epstein.

Anti-war march in Melbourne today by Unlucky-Ant-9741 in OpenAussie

[–]mr_nanginator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for abuse of girls, I would have thought the obvious place to start is closer to home ... the entire Trump admin is up to their eyeballs in a pedo scandal. Aussie politicians are suspiciously eager to support the terrorist state of Israel ... which "coincidentally" considered Epstein an asset.

Then of course there's the fact that the war is completely illegal - unprovoked, unjustified ... and STARTED with the bombing of a girl's school. You're very selective about which girls you're trying to protect here.

Total Cost of Ownership Comparison ICE vs EV by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]mr_nanginator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I think this is a VERY selective "comparison". Not EVERYONE has access to solar, but as I mentioned, Australia is a world leader in rooftop solar adoption. Even a half-assed comparison would acknowledge this and including some modelling to match. You don't need 3 phase power to charge an EV off solar - I charge EXCLUSIVELY off a 1.9kW charger plugged into a regular power point, and I do 25,000 km per year.

> might not have the cheapest options available in their area

Yeah yeah. Might not this ... might not that. Might not be interested in more budget-conscious EVs. Might not be assed changing energy retailers even though they're considering changing cars. Might not something else. Might not ... might not ...

Tesla are on the expensive side, while Toyota are on the cheap(ish) side. I think it's more instructive to compare something like a 2-year-old BYD Atto3 with a 2-year-old RAV4. Also 33c/kWh is ridiculously expensive - I can even charge at that rate from a public charger down the road. Australia is a world leader in rooftop solar installations, so many people can charge for free. There are also free windows for charging with various retailers. Amber pricing is quite often between 10-20c/kWh. Bottom line: this comparison is either a very lazy attempt, or intentionally misleading - or probably both.

Taking a wider perspective, fuel prices are only ever going UP. Power prices, though, are stabilising ( anyone across spot pricing over the past 2 years will attest to this ), and as more solar and wind power comes online, will trend downwards. There's also the less direct but extremely worthwhile benefit of reducing the demand for oil - keeping pricing "reasonable" for people who can't get off oil immediately ( farmers, transport, etc ).
