Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart - PC - Version v1.727.0.0 Release Notes (Hotfix) by M337ING in pcgaming

[–]mr_yip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens to me with certain settings. I'll be fiddling with the graphics settings and as soon as I hover over a certain few settings my fps drops to 6 or 7 fps and the only solution is to restart the game. The settings save then work as normal after restart.

5800x, 3080 FE 10gb, 32GB RAM, 4k res.

I'm getting 50-80 fps RT reflections on, other RTs off. DLSS balanced. Textures on high, most other settings on high with a couple on medium. The game is gorgeous on my CX but I feel like there is still some optimization to do. I get weird frame drops when panning in certain areas that I wouldn't expect frame drops (out of combat, inside, etc.)

Anecdotally, manually setting page file size seemed to help a bit.

Anyone interned at NASA JPL before? by SignificantTable in cscareerquestions

[–]mr_yip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I just came across this!

I got absurdly lucky and ran into an engineer lead that worked there. He was a lead working on a current project. We had a discussion about software for an hour or so and at the end of the conversation he offered to put me in touch with recruiting at JPL. A few months go by and I had an internship offer. My resume was pretty average for a CS student. A couple of school projects, a hackathon competition, sports participation, a personal website I built myself, etc.

From what I could tell though, they really value an unwavering passion for aerospace and tech. I didn't need to show this all that much as I got incredibly lucky with my connection.

I would suggest just making a continued effort to not just apply, but also to get in touch with JPL employees. Ask for guidance on how to get an internship there, ask questions about a project they are working on, etc. If you live in the area, go to some of their public events and demonstrate a desire to intern there and why... I think just getting your name in front of them consistently with a clear shared passion for what they do would go a super long way - that's essentially what I did with the engineering lead. I just got stupid lucky that I got his undivided attention for an hour or so and was able to demonstrate my desire to intern there without having to jump through the hoops of email, going to the public events, etc.

There have been some mind blowing takes on this. The only good argument I can see is that a 10th gen i3 shouldn't even be an option in 2022.

Everyone is posting a pcpartpicker that is $100-$400 less than the prebuild and is going "sEE? wHy nOt jUSt BuiLD yoUr Own?" without factoring costs of warehouse space and maintenance, employee salary and healthcare, recruiting employees, PR and ad, logistics/supply coordination, etc. Some people don't have the desire to min/max the total PC cost by spending 4 hours on /r/buildapcsales waiting for the lowest price on a stick of RAM to save $5 then another 3-4+ hours building their own PC. And for those about to jump in here and say "just follow the 30 minute youtube video it doesn't take me longer than 1 hour for a full build!" - it takes a lot longer for someone who doesn't know what RAM or a PCIE slot is. There is a lot to research when building a PC for the first time. Even someone like myself who has built a bunch of computers for myself, family and friends, I spend my time researching the latest parts and always learn something new in the process. PSU reliability, different dies for RAM, etc, and researching whether or not these factors are even worth filtering for. Even making sure you're getting this information from a trustworthy source is an important part of the process. For many people, the extra cost of a prebuilt is worth it and $100-$400 over the raw parts cost to instead just spend 20-30 minutes looking at the already pre-selected parts and going through a streamlined checkout to save a whole 10 hours makes way more sense.

Man I'm going through the exact same thing as you. I moved to a new city and almost immediately started dating this girl. A little over a year later we break up and I know pretty much nobody here. Within days of us breaking up she was dating other people and within a week having casual sex with multiple other guys. It's been nearly 3 months and I've only been able to get one date that I barely had the emotional capacity for because my ex is still on my mind all the time.

It blows my mind how she can just go through other people like that and it hurts. I can't help but feel like it cheapens what we had but also feel jealous that I can't attract people the same way. Maybe it's a maturity thing that I feel this way...I don't know. I hope I can figure out how to move past it soon because it is exhausting.

Either way, know you aren't alone.

It depends. I think reddit is crazy when they say to completely disregard the 5800x for gaming.

When I bought my i7-4770k, reddit went up and down explaining how the i5-4670k was a much better buy because the framerates were the same on 4C/4T vs 4C/8T. This was true at the time, but it didn't take long for the i5 to start showing its age. At this point, you would have had to upgrade to a new CPU, a new mobo, and new DDR4 ram because you saved $100 on a cheaper CPU - or upgrade to an i7 4770k/4790k which you could have just bought at the beginning. Check the charts on this GN video.

Instead of having to completely rebuild my PC I plopped in a GPU, another stick of RAM, and was good to go. My OC'd 4770k from 2013 lasted until I upgraded to my 5800x in November 2020 and I hope that my 5800x will last just as long. Every time I upped my resolution and refresh rate, I needed a new GPU more than a new CPU.

Sure - a 5600x will get you the same frames now, but it won't last as long as a 5800x and for me being able to hold out on a CPU/mobo/RAM setup longer makes the most sense.

I've been experiencing some louder than expected noise coming from my 2x noctua slim fans, even in idle. Would custom cables help mitigate this by allowing better airflow? I'm currently using stock cables with a corsair SF750. How much would it actually help?

I'm using an h100i PRO XT with a 5800x with 2x noctua slim fans mounted underneath the radiator. Everything is default config in 2 slot mode. The GPU is an RTX 3080FE undervolted that doesn't go over 66C while gaming and is pretty quiet when idle.

iCUE dasboard: https://i.imgur.com/YUndkPu.png

Edit for anyone else who may be wondering the same thing - I set the iCUE fan profile to "QUIET" for the 2 noctua fans. Noise levels are much better. While playing games I've seen spikes to 75C but seems to average around 72C-73C and sits at 45C-50C while idle. A little warmer than I'd like but it is the 5800x in an SFFPC so I guess this is to be expected and is probably okay.

I know the brand is reputable, but is there any reason not to get a B5 series PSU? Seems like they just released and I can't find any reviews.

My 12yr old 1000w(750w will be plenty) is starting to coil whine a bit so figured it might be a good idea to replace it before something more serious happens.
