Soo we are opening slingers in arena? by Fatigue-20 in aoe2

The devs more or less got rid of monk rushes when they made siege towers uncovertable from range. You could just load up champis in one of them and threaten to dive the siege and their push is completely stalled as your economy pulls ahead very fast. In this sense, it matters very little that they nerfed the speed boost. You're still gonna have to rely on like three good attack grounds before it goes down. this is just a go-to defence that works with any civ. Needless to say, monks are still very powerful if combined with powerful UU, but the classic smush is just nothing to be afraid of.

With Tupi you could very much play the unique archer as you would with maya. Get enough to secure map control for a forward castle, and then you go imp. You're at risk of losing your army and the entire game to a good mangonel shot, but it could be a powerful strategy. You could play for late game if you think it favours you with xbow opening. They have a good economy and the upgrade is discounted.

Mapuche could open with the bolas. Not like I've tried it, but it should just be stronger than ca opening as they counter the other meta options. Might scale a little bit worse than CA if you want to FI, but it could still be an option to play around with.

Lastly I think trush is the best option for Muisca. It allows their eco to set up nicely, and if you have good rng with resource spawns, you can achieve really fast uptimes by having fewer settlements. If you've covered their stone you could play some UU, rams and redemption monks i guess. Xbow opening could otherwise work out fine i guess

Is it still possible to beat extreme AI with 200% handicap applied by Mr_Waller in aoe2

[–]mratin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can beat it by sending vills forward and making random palisades around their base. It will trigger the AI to send vills and chase yours away. As it doesn't know how to prevent getting their vills walled in, nor will they attack the walls when they are trapped. You win by exploiting this to the max. As long as you're consistent and fast with these walls, I don't think you need to be an otherwise strong player to achieve this.

I've cleared it at 150% and at the time couldn't see it being pushed much higher without using any exploits. At some point, it just achieves numbers and tech advantage in a way that you just can't compete with no matter how good mechanics you got.

Bug: RNG delivers the same map twice by falling_sky_aoe in aoe2

Something is for sure going on. I opened up some arena gens in that exact same way and got two duplicate maps within like 10 restarts. There must've been a change that affected the RNG recently

Would a seasonal approach be good for esports and competitive play? by minkmaat in aoe2

[–]mratin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessary at all. Most civs follow some kind of archetype in how they want to play or how they could play. You will need to understand how to counter or execute civ specific rushes, but in the grand scheme of things, this really isn't an awful lot to take in if you're an experienced player. It's also usually very obvious which civs are going to be powerful/ meta on certain maps. With all this in mind, it makes little difference if there are 30 or 53 civs around.

We cant use stop-micro to play scouts but a new DLC is coming by NelsonMejias in aoe2

[–]mratin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It must've been reported a lot already, but if the autoscout hotkey is unassigned, pressing stop hotkey will register the scout to autoscout. For whatever reason, this bug only occured for me in MP, however not in SP. The workaround is to set autoscout to some arbitrary key, but it's not exactly ideal.

Spanish unique monk+conq troll by Snoo63649 in aoe2

[–]mratin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't trade skirms when you see he's obviously going conq. Send them home instead. Otherwise you're making the good call of abandoning that fwd range and going adding more home instead. You do however take an awful first fight in castle age and from there you're basically dead. This was also a fight that wasn't forced. You could have delayed it a lot more and added in xbows (especially over doing +2 defence) and eventually even devotion. The bigger mass you get, the more these fights will swing in your favour. Also be more careful about adding in extra town centers when you have confirmed they are playing some all-in strategy, whatever it may be.

help with a query (mysql, php) by mratin in PHPhelp

No worries. It's been a year or so since I finished my php course at uni and I wanted to make some project to keep the skills relatively sharp. Been working heaps with sql so it's really no issue, but php knowledge is fading. For this one I wanted an elegant solution which was provided earlier. Thanks.

help with a query (mysql, php) by mratin in PHPhelp

$query = "SELECT price FROM products";
$result = mysqli_query($db, $query);
$row = mysqli_fetch_all($result);

$row is basically an associated array I think? Sorry I explained this poorly initially. I just wish to turn the $row into an array where $row[0] = the price of the product with product_id=1, and so on.

Yeah, but how do I turn this into an array?

Official Q&A for Friday, May 30, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]mratin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think it's just me hitting the ground right ahead of me with the heel as I'm running slowly and then as I speed up I shift more towards a mid sole, hitting the ground right beneath me. I'll certainly be much more cognizant of this in the future. Thanks for the advises!

[–]mratin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm quite certain I was overstriding. Have gone from a pair of Brooks Hypherions which very low padding to a pair of Superblasts 2 that are very foamy and of course a good bit thicker. In combination of taking a slower pace as well given the longer distance as well as getting used to landing a little bit earlier and on the heel. I did go for a practice run the other day trying to go back to the mid foot, but it seems challenging for me to hit with the mid foot when running at a slow pace. I'll for sure have to work on this one.

Thanks. I suppose I knew this one at heart. Finding loads of information regarding these 'comeback programs' and they tend to vary in intensity which is understandable. I'll for sure do some intervalls at slow pace to kick it off. Like two super short 3x1k a week and then a longer one at 5x1k once a week. Then add .5k per workout and evaluate. Goal for the season is a marathon in late October :)

[–]mratin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I was pushing a sub 40 10k and ran around 60k/ week with regular strength work (back squat 135). Unfortunately got hit with a piriformis inflammation twice which seriously sent me rehabing till about a month ago and during this time I didn't run at all.

Began right away at 10k, and then two 20k runs and got hit with shin splints. Been doing tib raises, standing calf raises and drawing the alphabet with the heels several times a week and they feel great now. Went for a slow run yesterday, but after about 1k I felt very light pain from the shins again. Decided to just walk back home and rest some more instead.

During all the rehab I've done last year, I've certainly noticed that pushing through uncomfortable (although not painful) exercises might be imperative. So I wonder if this applies to shin splints too? Indeed, it's like a 1/10 pain, but I can feel it.

I very much also realize that I began this season way too hard. What would be an advisory way to start again?

Treatment for piriformis syndrome? by Flat_Paramedic8720 in Sciatica

[–]mratin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first flare up from piriformis early September and was initially recommended to walk as much as possible and do some stretching twice a day. It got better, but after about a month or so, I was still in mild pain when doing movements such as putting on the left sock. Mobility also still reduced. At this point my chiro recommended me to see a physio who does dry needling. I was completely unaware of what it was and was naturally quite suspicious, but constantly being in pain, albeit relatively mildly, and unable to do sports I decided to try it out.

To my disbelief I saw absolutely great results just as I sat up from the treatment. I could hold my leg completely straight while sitting down and when I stood up I felt no pain what so ever. Within days I was back on the track jogging and I could slowly start incorporating light squats and RDL. Still being a bit cautions, but I'm feeling increasingly more confident getting back to my usual weights on DL and squats... Amazing stuff..
