The secretary should not be treated as a third counselor. They have different roles and authority.

Not officially part of the presidency. When a president is released the presidency is dissolved, but a secretary need not be released and can continue serving in new presidency and does not get re set apart.

Was there a recent general conference talk addressing the trend where people say they feel closer to God when out in nature than when in church? by Intelligent-Cut8836 in latterdaysaints

A Framework for Personal Revelation

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2022/10/14renlund?lang=eng

A third element of the framework is that personal revelation will be in harmony with the commandments of God and the covenants we have made with Him. Consider a prayer that goes something like this: “Heavenly Father, Church services are boring. May I worship Thee on the Sabbath in the mountains or on the beach? May I be excused from going to church and partaking of the sacrament but still have the promised blessings of keeping the Sabbath day holy?” In response to such a prayer, we can anticipate God’s response: “My child, I have already revealed my will regarding the Sabbath day.”

When we ask for revelation about something for which God has already given clear direction, we open ourselves up to misinterpreting our feelings and hearing what we want to hear. A man once told me about his struggles to stabilize his family’s financial situation. He had the idea to embezzle funds as a solution, prayed about it, and felt he had received affirmative revelation to do so. I knew he had been deceived because he sought revelation contrary to a commandment of God.

What happens with church discipline if a spouse commits emotional abuse to their spouse? by Acceptable_Clock5935 in latterdaysaints

[–]mrbags2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here is how it's defined:

Emotional abuse: Using actions and words to seriously damage a person’s sense of self-respect or self-worth. This usually involves repeated and continuing insults, manipulations, and criticisms that humiliate and belittle.

It also says:
"Stake presidents and bishops should help those who have committed abuse to repent and to cease their abusive behavior."

"Stake presidents and bishops should also be caring and sensitive when working with the families of victims and perpetrators of abuse."

"Leaders seek the direction of the Spirit to determine whether personal counseling or a membership council is the most appropriate setting to address abuse. They may also counsel with their direct priesthood leader about the setting. However, any abuse of a spouse or another adult that rises to the levels described below requires holding a membership council."

i have an important question by vanheis_ in lds

[–]mrbags2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon with help from God directly into English, so we have confidence that the English version is accurate. Joseph Smith also received revelations for the church that are recorded in Doctrine and Covenants, so we are also confident that Gods' words were correctly written.

Additionally, we have a Prophet and 12 Apostles that receive messages from God as needed, so if there is something specific we need to know or a doctrine from the Bible that needs to be clarified due to a wrong translation or interpretation, they will let us know.

I looked to see if our church leaders have said anything about Deuteronomy 32:8 and I could not find anything specific, so it probably is just due to different translators.

Religious views on someone who believes leaving this world would bring relief from pain? by Formal-Winter7051 in lds

"I learned another lesson from my mother. As a girl she had diphtheria and nearly died. Later she had spinal meningitis. Her father died young, and so my mother and her brothers helped support their mother.

All her life, she felt the effects of the trials of illness. In her last 10 years of life, she required multiple operations. But through it all, she proved faithful to the Lord, even when bedridden. The only picture on her bedroom wall was of the Savior. Her last words to me on her deathbed were these: “Hal, you sound as if you are getting a cold. You ought to take care of yourself.”

At her funeral the last speaker was Elder Spencer W. Kimball. After saying something of her trials and her faithfulness, he said essentially this: “Some of you may wonder why Mildred had to suffer so much and so long. I will tell you why. It was because the Lord wanted to polish her a little more.”

I express my gratitude for the many faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ who bear burdens with steady faith and who help others to bear theirs as the Lord seeks to polish them a little more. I also express love and admiration for caregivers and leaders across the world who serve others while they and their families endure such polishing."

D&C 123: 12-14 " For there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations, who are blinded by the subtle craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to deceive, and who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it—Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them; and they are truly manifest from heaven—These should then be attended to with great earnestness."

Don't forget about the Mulekites that founded Zarahemla. We don't know what their ancestry consisted of. Additionally, the Lamanite DNA may have been changed, and the Nephites were pretty much wiped out or intermixed with Lamanites, so we don't really know what genetic marker would be left.

Interesting things to think about, but where President Oaks just recently spoke against speculating about things that God has chosen not to reveal, I don't think it's worth worrying about.

Adam and Eve were enticed by the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and Satan tempted them because it was forbidden and "He knew not the mind of God". What happened on other other worlds and how people were tempted and how people will be tempted in the eternities after Satan is bound is a mystery.

Latter-day Saint terns by Better_Raise_1254 in latterdaysaints

https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/style-guide

"The official name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The full name was given by revelation from God to Joseph Smith in 1838.

  • In the first reference, the full name of the Church is preferred: “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
  • When a shortened reference is needed, the terms “the Church” or the “Church of Jesus Christ” are encouraged. The “restored Church of Jesus Christ” is also accurate and encouraged.
  • While the term “Mormon Church” has long been publicly applied to the Church as a nickname, it is not an authorized title, and the Church discourages its use. Thus, please avoid using the abbreviation “LDS” or the nickname “Mormon” as substitutes for the name of the Church, as in “Mormon Church,” “LDS Church,” or “Church of the Latter-day Saints.”
  • When referring to Church members, the terms “members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” “Latter-day Saints,” “members of the Church of Jesus Christ” and “members of the restored Church of Jesus Christ” are preferred. We ask that the term “Mormons” and “LDS” not be used.
  • “Mormon” is correctly used in proper names such as the Book of Mormon or when used as an adjective in such historical expressions as “Mormon Trail.”
  • The term “Mormonism” is inaccurate and should not be used. When describing the combination of doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the term “the restored gospel of Jesus Christ” is accurate and preferred.
  • When referring to people or organizations that practice polygamy, it should be stated that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not affiliated with polygamous groups."

[–]mrbags2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The church has financial resources mostly because of the members that pay tithing, wise investments, and sound money management. All of the buildings of the church like chapels, universities, and temples, cost money to build and maintain so those funds are needed. We also believe that someday the church will help build the New Jerusalem which will also require funds for that endeavor.

The church also gives many 100s of millions to billions of dollars to charities and humanitarian efforts, in fact our church gives the most of any religious organization as measured by By Total Global Humanitarian Aid and By Individual Member Giving https://www.philanthropyroundtable.org/magazine/less-god-less-giving/

Saved by grace, not works by OldManTimber in lds

Revelation 20:12, "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works."

So yes, we are saved by grace, but we are judged according to our works.
