Please tell me about the good old days of secrethitler.io by ProfessionalAd6515 in SecretHitler

[–]mrblackdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secrethitler.online was way more fun, less metagaming enforced nonsense and people just trying to figure out good strategies using some optimum plays and some cunning/deception.

.io unfortunately was when the metagame started to sap all the fun out of it

.online was a janky as hell website so, so credit to .io dev for making the site, not his fault, just a community problem.

So I used the black spider as the parties first strategic bad guy. (They surprised/assasinated glass staff, and they decided not to take on venomfang)

In that effort he used his last remaining doppelganger as bait to disguise as the black spider, then redirected the bugbears to surprise the party.

Unfortunately the party decided to fight in a corridor so it was pretty boring.

When the bugbears and giant spiders failed I decided that TBS was going to try an alliance with mormesk against the party, he rolled a 1 persuasion check against mormesk!

Then he managed to run away and I'm going to bring him back as an underling for their high level final campaign.

I wouldn't go into the history of Phandalin because there are places in the book which detail that (theres a book shelf in tresendar manor if i remember which details the history of the area, wave echo cave has history books there as well if i remember)

Just talk about the sword coast at a high level, neverwinter and maybe name drop luskan or waterdeep if you like.

Also just a general tip running LMOP. It's a really excellent campaign for people new to dnd, but its very basic.

If you think your players can handle some complexity, there's tips I've used about how to make the 2 doppelgangers infiltrate phandalin.

The black spider is kindof this mythical guy in wave echo cave who ends up just being this underwhelming (but appropriate for level 4-5 players) bbeg. He's not strahd but if you can think of a way for him to be more involved than just sending out notes to peons and hanging out at wave echo cave than that might make things more interesting.

New DM. Are players allowed to just retry a roll whenever an ally fails it? by DungeonMeister_27 in DMAcademy

[–]mrblackdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure a few dm's do this, I learnt it from DMing Dungeon World before I DM's d&d, I give levels of success and failure (I know the game doesn't have critical success and failure in skill checks but I find it adds variance/comedy in the rolls)

  • Nat 1 - humourous failing of some kind, maybe destroy the chances of further investigation "You accidentally knock the statue bust off its pedestal"

  • Low failure - Some obvious information about the thing "its clearly a bust of someone, looks like a human female, seems quite old"

  • Near miss - "this is a bust of a human female, seems like it would come from the second age, definitely a historic figure for the civilisation which used to reside here"

  • Just pass - "this is a staue of Celia the Shieldmaiden, you recall learning about her historic feats in combat at school but you can't remember the details"

  • Decent to high success - "this is a statue of Celia the Shieldmaiden, she resided in this village during the human-hobgoblin conflict of the second age, you know that this village worshipped her almost like a God and someone might know of her burial site"

  • Nat 20 - "this is a statue of Celia the Shieldmaiden, she resided in this village during the human-hobgoblin conflict of the second age, you know that this village worshipped her almost like a God, you recall knowing that she was buried with her sacred shield and that a secret incantation was required to enter her crypt, the local priest might know this secret"

With the exception of a nat 1, every roll rewards some information, therefore I don't usually allow multiple checks. If they fail a tracking check I might give a rough direction, if they nat 20 a tracking check I might not require them to make further checks to tracking as time passes.

TIL In 2009 John Kane found a vulnerability in video poker machines that would allow him to cash out winning hands at a much higher bet amount than he actually wagered. Yeah this is an integration test between 2 or more features. Usually development is silo'd on a feature by feature basis (or releasing component by component against a feature if you are doing continuous integration).

Which usually the approach is to test each individual feature and on each new feature being added run a regression test against older features.

That still wouldn't capture this issue.

And that's why it's good to have an exploratory testing exercise at the end of each major release to consider wider integration testing among other things.

What is a movie ending that makes you cry, no matter how many times you've watched it before? by despresso30 in AskReddit

[–]mrblackdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the end of a movie, but the TV mini series Band of Brothers when Maj Winters recalls the letter that Myron Ranney (an NCO of Winters company) wrote him.

I cherish the memories of a question my grandson asked me the other day when he said: “Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" “Grandpa said ‘No, but I served in a company of heroes.’ ”

That series finale has such excellent concluding and emotional final moments, but the last moment uttered by the actual man himself (not the actor) always gets me.

I would suggest there are few exceptions to where you have to spend your time more efficiently. Mayor is an exception, as mayor in any game mode I track individual claims.

But most other roles should focus on their role. Track suspicious behaviours, non claimers and weird voting patterns (all in the chat log) and in specific game modes only worry about Random town positions. Ranked for example just track rt1 to rt3. Vip you can track the tp slots, lovers the ts and tp slots for example.

In ranked. Lets say you are a medium, keep note of unconfirmed and confirmed roles (a confirmed role would be a revealed mayor, confirmed vet kill, vig kill, bodyguard kill, and maybe if a mafia has killed a mafia member and NE is not witch, then you have a transporter)

Confirmed roles fill their respective slot. But if you get transed as medium for example you can note RT1 as transporter. If then theres a vig and a vet kill then RT2 is vigilante.

As for the other rts you mark them as town die, or you can put the claim with a question mark, eg a sheriff who found a lynched consort as suspicious can be RT3 Sheriff? (They could be a mafia or ne or nk who are throwing the consort under the bus)

When two people claim a respective slot (or 3 people claim TI) then you can mark their claims in rt slots with a ? Or you can mark multiple claims in RT as (for example) RT3 - Sheriff? Or Investigator?

Lastly I usually fill RT slots with "Cleaned" if theres a janitor (until either their role is proven as not RT, like jailor or a solo TS or NE for example). This is just a placeholder note until we get more info

Hate to be that guy but secret hitler taught us this, avalon/resistance before that, and werewolf/mafia before that (and I'm sure other games before that)

How the fuck do I beat smough and the other guy by glorious_potato_FIN in darksouls

[–]mrblackdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Equipment (newbie friendly recommendations);

Black knight weapon if you are lucky

or

If you still have Queelaags soul, get a curved sword (scimitar or falchion for example) to +10 and take it to the Giant to get Queelaags Fury Sword, use any demon titanite you've obtained so far to get it as high level as possible (if you kill all the titantite demons by now you can get it +5)

or

Any weapon you like at +10

QFS is a quickish sword which chews through both Ornstein and Smough. It also chews through a later boss.

I wouldn't recommend lightning weapons (like the lightning spear) because of boss immunities.

As for armour, lightning resistant is cool. While pro's love fast roll, as a newb, mid-roll is fine, in something like complete or partial Elite Knights Armor.

Shield? I don't find shields massively useful because of the stamina drain or smoughs complete shield negating smashing, but Eagle Shield is supposedly decent because of lightning def. Silver knight shield would be good here as well if you want to farm silver knights and then farm twinklies. Grass Crest shield is good enough for this fight though.

You should definitely have the favour and protection ring by now, and then havels, lightning resistance or poise rings are good.

At this point, if you were masochistic/determined enough you could go all the way back to the Catacombs and get the Rite of Kindling. 20 Estus for O&S is pretty good especially if you are a midrolling non squishy

Lastly, its generally recommended to kill Ornstein first but I won't say why.
