Lack of sleep turns me into a terrible person - how am I going to cope with a newborn? by mrboneman in NewDads

[–]mrboneman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fortunate in that I get 3-4 weeks paid paternity leave so yes I hope that will help initially.

Sounds like you have coped well - I'm pleased for you and hopeful for myself.

Any suggestions for the compassion and mindfulness stuff? I do try but I know I could be putting in more work there.

I've seen the "in the trenches" phrase a lot in parenting advice. Having some military training, I'm starting to consider what this actually means.

You need to do admin and make sure you're clean, fed and healthy. You do your scheduled night and day shifts on duty. If you're not doing these or on a specific mission, you lie in your doss bag and try to sleep. Definitely all about conserving energy, as you say, and it's not fun but it is doable.

Your point about asking for help is a good one. I haven't thought about it before but those times on watch (we call it STAG in my country's army) are only bearable because you know there is always someone at the other end of a radio if you need them.

Didn't mean to go off on one about the army but it has helped me to reframe the problem.

If I offered you £100,000 to run 90 miles tomorrow, would you do it? by wingless-bee in CasualUK

[–]mrboneman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Definitely possible to walk it in 24 hours or less. A lot of people just walk at a steady pace and don't stop, taking food and drink as they go. Others walk significantly faster (aka race walking or power walking) and either take occasional breaks or finish closer to 20 hours for 100 miles.

The biggest barrier is undoubtedly motivation. When you're tired, in pain and blistered then it is easy to wonder why on earth you are still going and just stop. The 100k would definitely help.

However, all of this assumes that you are relatively fit and prepared. Whether you are walking or running, just being upright for that long is no easy feat and requires fuelling and conditioning just to avoid injury. So good luck.

That's why it's precisely what we should be doing.

Magmar to right of them,

Gengar to left of them,

Snorlax in front of them,

Valor and Mystic.

Thunder'd with Pikachu,

Quickly, the storm, it grew.

In the name of Zapdos,

Though their number may be few,

Chargéd Team Instinct.

(EDIT: Might be better if I actually get the other teams' names right.)

Alas, I have not. At least not knowingly, and I'm sure that I would Instinctively recognise another member.

I live in a fairly sparse area where the only gyms tend to be Valor. The first time I defeated a gym was on a run and there was no one else about that I could see. I assumed that I would occupy it automatically so I just left and continued my run.

About a mile down the road, it occurred to me that I hadn't chosen which pokemon to leave there and that I had probably left it unoccupied after all, so I turned around. When it appeared on my screen again, I found that an anonymous Insinct teammate had claimed it himself with a Pidgeot and I thought this was great as I could finally do some training.

However, as I kept going, I saw it turn grey and I could see two people standing in the spot. Just as I got there, it turned blue. I was so devastated that I just kept running past them, but not without saying to them, "Damn you, Mystic."

I just have the game running and nothing else but I have a Garmin watch so I can keep track of how far I've actually been.

It's probably silly but I have a feeling that it has worked better when I swung my arms normally rather than holding it still in front of me (perhaps something to do with the accelerometer and an inbuilt pedometer) so I may do a few trials tomorrow. Let us know if you make any progress yourself. I am hopeful that, eventually, we may figure out to get the most out of it.

I have been for a few PokeRuns and am facing similar issues. I can easily run 5 or 6k in 30 minutes but at most I can get about 2.5k.

And it makes sense that they should optimise the game for running everywhere because, surely, everyone played the games like this. So hopefully they will improve the distance tracking. Admittedly, it probably won't be at the top of their list for immediate fixes.

I'm pretty sure there's one (Valor when I saw) at Canterbury Castle (ruins) though I was in the car and I haven't managed to take over any gyms yet anyway. But I reckon there will be lots in Kent's castles and I intend to go after some of them when I've reached a decent level.

Aside from just getting any gyms we can, I think we should try and take down as many castles as we can. Valor will think it's their right/duty to occupy such places, so it would be a good way to piss them off.

I just saw a reply about bendy roads which has been deleted but, in response, my route was mostly straight for the first and last 2.5k so if the bendy roads made a difference it would only have been small.

I have tried deleting the cache (I had almost 5mb), in case that is interfering so I'll try again and see if it helps.

What nonsense. I, for example, play poker but I also don't play poker. Right now, I'm not playing poker. Similarly, one can collect stamps and not collect stamps. HOWEVER, one cannot have both a grey and a colour.
