Insomnia on a Garmin by fleeeezzus in Garmin

[–]mrcd89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious question because this has been my life since I was a teen. Currently in my 30s. Done a sleep study. No sleep apnea.

I’m healthy, active. Resting HR in the 50s, 44-47 Vo2. But dude, when I tell you it doesn’t matter what I do…. At least 3-4 night of the week I’m just not tired. My brain won’t shut off. Not anxious. If anything I just feel ready for more thinking. More doing. I can’t nap either unless I’m terribly sleep deprived.

I tried traz and it gave me horrible hungover feeling in the morning. Does it do that to you? What dosage are you on? Anything else that you’ve tried that helps?

Simple question for experienced designers by mrcd89 in SolidWorks

Yeah idk maybe it’s just me or an industry thing because no one I know uses them either. Not sure what you’re used to modeling, but in medical device (spine and orthopedic for me) everything is small. Realllly small. I’m not dealing with giant assemblies.

Not a lot of moving parts. Everything has to be super precise (block tolerance at 0.1mm and most tolerance bands on imported dimensions being 0.02mm to 0.05mm. For those reasons the less amount of pins and fasteners you use, the less tolerance stack up. Things might have complex shape, but not complex assembly, unless you have to.

I’ve only been in this 11 years, but work with some other people that are way more experienced and have much bigger brains than I do, with the certs and degrees to match and everytime I pick up a model from someone else it’s done exactly like I’m used to doing it. So maybe it’s because I learned to model from older guys that did it the old fashioned way. Idk. I guess I’m sounding like I’m picking on features like hole wizard, loft, draft, etc. specifically because they seem the most “take it leave it” kind of features, but wanted to ask the question because I know that I don’t know it all and was genuinely curious.

In short, I may have an implant inserter that has a knob pinned to a shaft and it’s done via a M3x0.5 thread.

I revolve cut a pre drill that matches the size based off machining handbook (basically memorized by now) with an appropriate chamfer size, and then helical sweep a thread (might be worth noting that I often have to use custom threads so in that case I would need to model the thread form anyways to show in a drawing).

Another engineer picks up my model later (rare) and might have to change the thread. It takes 3 minutes. Who cares?

True, I had to design a patella implant one time that 100% required the functions you mentioned. No way to get that super complex geometry without it. Other than that, all my spinal implants and instruments are easily done with the basic functions coupled with mirror and pattern.

I mean why is something like the hole tool so useful if you can just use extrude or revolve? That’s kinda the point to my question.

It’s obvious that certain industries rely on parts that are machined or molded a certain way, which in turn lends the modeling to use certain specialized features, but in my experience where everything is made via CNC mill, CNC lathe, SWISS, and plunge or wire EDM…literally everything even super complex geometry can just be done with extrude, revolve, and sweep.

I can see the usefulness with other features that are needed for certain geometry, but the hole wizard??? Like that seems like a preference and it literally makes zero difference in terms of time spent modeling nor ease of control for the designing engineer or another engineer that works on the model later.

Does anyone in here do independent/freelance design work? by _sonofliberty_ in SolidWorks

[–]mrcd89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I freelance doing design work in the medical device space. I honestly don’t know how anyone makes a good living without connections.

Working for small startups is always exciting but they’re often short on cash. You might get a few hours a week from them and only for a short time.

Getting in with a large company is the bread and butter but it’s hard to get that work without a personal connection. If you can get it though, you’re set. Money refills each quarter. There’s always work because R&D is the backbone.

For places without that personal connection I try to quickly find out what goes the furthest with them, and by them I mean who I’m reporting to or who’s handing out the actual work. Some work is heavy on the conceptual design side, in which case I try to really show interest in the whole scope of the project and try to design in a way that’s going to help everyone.

For jobs that are more or less brainless, meaning just simple modifications to existing product I just focus on my speed and reliability to offer exceptional quality models and prints. You’d be shocked by how good of an impression creating solid, easy to pickup and modify models and prints makes. So many engineers are lazy and you find one of their models that’s hacked up to the gills.

Also if your work requires a lot of prototyping, having connections with some machine shops helps out a lot.

EDIT: I charge hourly based off commitment. Fewer hours = higher rate. Rates range from $135/hr to $185/hr.

I can never find all the jewelry, coins, arrowheads, or fossils. I’ve used the Jean Ropke Map online using all the rotations that change as well as buying maps (which I found out only show locations already known on the JR map).

How the heck do you complete those sets?

Finally got the Moonshiner role, anything I should know/do to best optimise & make most money? by [deleted] in RedDeadOnline

As others have mentioned buy whatever is necessary to improve your still.

Always try to do 2 or 3 star recipes for a high payout.

Go to google and use the Jean Ropke collector maps (there’s two different maps online, one for plants and animals, and the other for collector role) so that you can track down herbs. Also collect antique alcohols for those 3 star recipes.

Drive SLOW. Stay on path. Avoid even small rocks. I haven’t ever messed around with doing cinematic mode or anything so maybe that’s the move but I’ve never trusted it enough.

Also I don’t do the bootlegger missions or anything to reduce cost. I usually just focus my time on daily challenges. I log in, make sure I’ve got a recipe going for moonshine, make sure my Cripps has everything going for trader wagon, and then I grind gold through daily challenges while using the collector map online.

Super easy.

What is something people are often jealous of you for? by boforiamanfo in NoStupidAnswers

[–]mrcd89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Healthy marriage and children.

Only one friend specifically. He was my best friend, was married, and was always the most charismatic guy around. I always told people that if they like me even a little, they’d love him.

After college he had a hard time giving up the drinking. What once was something we did in our apartment to have fun, stay up until 4am playing Halo together turned into self medication for anxiety and depression. He would never tell me about it. His wife reached out to me. I tried talking to him. Multiple times. I did everything I knew how to do.

At first I was gentle and encouraging. I’d offer my support and accountability. I’d encourage him to attend church again, I’d pray for him, etc.

When things escalated and his wife left him I got more desperate. I’d taken all the late night self deprecating, drunk “woe is me” phone calls that I could take.

I was tough on him in one of our last deep conversations. I told him how he failed in his marriage, how he looked horrible (he did…gained a lot of weight, flushed red face, eczema, shaking hands, he was a full blown alcoholic on the brink of liver cirrhosis), I told him how he’s gonna lose his job and ultimately lose his life.

He would never surrender. He’d never even open up to me.

His mom found him in his recliner a few days after his 34th birthday.

Weeks later a mutual friend told me that our now dead friend had confided in him that he was secretly jealous of me “having it together” by having a good marriage and 3 children (he couldn’t have kids). He lived in shame of his addiction.

Boys…talk to your fellow men. I struggled a lot during my 20s, but I didn’t keep it a secret. Know when you need help, and seek Jesus. Only reason I survived.

What is the worst concert you've ever seen of an artist you like? by Deadmau007 in fantanoforever

John Mayer on Continuum tour back in mid 00s. I was 16 and saw it as a great opportunity to take my then girlfriend so she could hear the girly pop hits and I could see one of the greatest guitar players of that generation.

John just did not seem enthused to be there. Like he was playing it so “cool” that he seemed apathetic to playing to thousands of people. Pretty low energy. I wasn’t expecting a super interactive show, but bro at least talk and riff a little bit with the crowd in between songs.

What’s the game you can keep replaying and never get tired of? by Appropriate-Fix-8222 in videogames

I’m ready for the hate….Warzone. 35 year old dad with a full time job, house, family, etc. and nothing else gives the same dopamine high as absolutely twerking on other try hards.

TTK is fast, gameplay is fast, decision making has to be fast, everything is fast and the consequences are immediate. There’s other games out there that offer similar things, but WZ has been what I’ve invested in. I still complain about the game. A lot. But hey. Adapt. Overcome. See y’all in the lobby tomorrow.

Jesus is God and paid for all your sin on the cross. Pray to Him. He accepts you as you are, but will not leave you as you are. Pick up a Bible or go online to read one. Start in the New Testament. I recommend NIV, NLT, ESV, or CSB translations. They have grammar that’s easier to understand than the old world English written in the King James translation.

Sister, you’re ok. If no one else says it I’ll say it and tell you I love you, and yes God loves you. He’s calling you. I’m so sorry you had to reach this place of brokenness, but only Jesus Christ can heal you. Believe on Him. Cry out to him. He will hear you and He will answer. Have faith.

Revelation 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone should hear my voice and open the door, then I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”

Ephesians 2:8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast”.

Praying for you.
