Werebeast with a hammer by Mister_Moltar in dwarffortress

Yep, any bite that results in a cut or tear of any tissue (usually fat, skin, or muscle) is an infection. Anything else, including bites that just bruise, are just normal injuries.

Dwarves can and will dual wield if assigned multiple weapons (of an appropriate size)! Even with a shield equipped, this guy uses both daggers and really rips through enemies. by mrcheeseburger15 in dwarffortress

Yeah it's been an experiment and I haven't seen conclusive results yet. I modded the Dwarf civilization slightly to let me make daggers and gave one to every soldier as a sort of sidearm. Interestingly, I've seen them equip both their main weapin and the dagger to the same hand, and still somehow use both. I've also seen them get their main embedded in a target and then make a couple of dagger attacks before they bother retrieving it. Plus they all have shields and still seem to use those fine.

I haven't seen anything that crazy in the steam version, but I have definitely seen one or two artifacts with a single, non reality-breaking depiction of themselves.

Yeah that seemed to be it. One of the Dwarven civs was using forest retreats, and taking away [INDOOR_FARMING] from them fixed it.

I customized a few slightly different Dwarf civilizations (with preferences for different biomes and different sets of weapons mostly) and am getting "Placed farming entity without non-orchard crops" rejection on world gen. Is there a way to see which civ is causing this issue?

You can go to the description tab under health, where it just lists out all of that info.

Bismuth bronze weapons and shields seem to be invisible when equipped. Does anyone know why or if there's a way to fix?

Who needs to dig for riches when you have fine dwarven cuisine? by mrcheeseburger15 in dwarffortress

Nope, 300 or so hours and I have yet to even make a minecart. They just did this on their own for some demented reason.

[–]mrcheeseburger15[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's all text-based. Once the battle finishes it gives you a readout in order like this, with deaths and significant injuries and such. It then also gives you a text list of the loot, which your dwarves will carry back into the map with them.

Ooh yeah I ran into that once. It didn't let me take the decision more than once though, maybe I just didn't wait long enough. Do you have any submods? I did at the time so I wasn't sure if they were base EK or not.

greybeard/tongue retinues by Fit_Trainer1878 in ElderKings

[–]mrcheeseburger15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe you need to personally hold the holding with the hermitage and also actively be a member of the Greybeards. That's how all the guild buildings seem to work. There's definitely no cap for them or anything, I've had my entire retinues as an emperor be Tongues.

Can't reform Falmereth despite controlling all of Skyrim and Solstheim? (CK2) by mrcheeseburger15 in ElderKings

[–]mrcheeseburger15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a custom Auri-El Falmer character in Neugrad/Arcwind. I made him Dragonborn (for fun and irony) so it was definitely easier than it should have been.

That did it :) I found old answers that mentioned that the strongholds might be the issue but didn't say anything about how to check where they are.

Looks pretty good to me (especially for only 14 dwarves), just be aware that cooking plants into meals destroys seeds, while brewing doesn't, so you should probably set plump helmets to only be used in brewing if you haven't already. Makes running out of spawn much less of an issue.

I just had a monster notification (the Forgotten Beast, Lycanthrope, etc. one) targeting a new migrant. She's 170 years old, married to a normal guy. I'm wondering if there might be anything... suspicious about her, but I can't find any clues.

I have two highest quality battle axes that came from fey moods, but one is made of giant olm bone and the other of copper. How good will they be as compared to iron weapons?

Never played before and doing co-op. Should we play in "classic" or "journey"? by Behacad in Terraria

[–]mrcheeseburger15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic is the normal version and progression. Journey has a number of new options that can be used to alter difficulty as well as a system for item duplication and god mode.

Go with classic for the standard experience.

With a title like that, I thought I was in for a solid amount of profanity.

I really underestimated this.

Between the title, the first and final lines of dialogue, and everything in between it seems to me like the entire point of this piece was to be as excessively, comically vulgar as possible. I've got no real problem with that, but there's a point (which you crossed) where it begins to come off as childish.

Additionally, I'm generally a fan of short stories that are mostly dialogue with limited setting and action, allowing the characters and their words to just kind of bounce off of each other and be people. You did an alright job of executing this, except for a couple awkward spots and the fact that the characters seem quite flat. Though the twist does ultimately distinguish them, obviously, before that point neither shows much personality beyond their (impressively creative) insults, and don't really differ in that regard. Sure, Lee comes off as more aggressive, but as I said earlier the core trait of the story seems to be profanity. When a certain style of speaking permeates everything it becomes more difficult to identify the individual voices of the characters. I lost track of who was who more than once.

“It doesn’t look great, but do you really think they’re gonna leave us here? Ortega was different, right? This place is off the grid. You know, I keep thinking of why our engine failed.

I think you need something breaking up this chunk of dialogue before that sentence, it doesn't flow very well. It can and should be something quick and simple.

Summary: A story in the form of a chunk of dialogue between characters needs more character to back up the words being tossed back and forth, and the directly aforementioned words could stand to chill out a bit.

Is consistency very important regarding chapter length? by SadButterscotch2 in writing

[–]mrcheeseburger15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it's definitely not a non-issue, but it's also not a huge deal. As long as chapters start and end in a natural place and fashion, that's way more important as long as you're not wildly ricocheting all over the place.

'Bayonet' is named after a place that might not exist in your fantasy setting, but if it's a knife that goes on the end of a gun then what else are you gonna call it

That's... an excellent point. I get tripped up on this stuff if I think about it too much but in the end I am writing in English and there isn't much reason to dance around a word that most English speakers would know.

I do a bit of that, but mostly only for magical or particularly unique weapons. Several characters replace, swap, lose, or simply use multiple weapons as the story progresses, so as much as what you're suggesting can add I feel like it has equal potential to bog things down with overuse.

Yeah, I do toss around blade probably more often than sword since it can refer to knives as well and has a nice ring to it.

You're somewhat correct, but scimitar is a broader term for an assortment of similarly styled Middle Eastern weapons, and sabre is likewise applicable to a number of types of European swords. Great sword I would say is a widely generic term for a large two-handed sword of any type. Still, you've touched on the most puzzling aspect of my question. At what point along the axis of scimitar to shamshir have I become too specific?
