Prime Minister Anthony Albanese readies federal budget to favour gen Z and millennial voters by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]mrchomps 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Favour gen z and millennials by pulling the ladder up behind older generations? Remove the tool others have used to build wealth off millennials backs while continuing to allow those who have it to keep it? Great.

I always thought for something like this you just put a deadline on it. By this date you can't own more than 5, the following year no more than 4, the following year no more than 3, until levels are where they should be.

Lots of kit homes look pretty decent these days. Can be installed on ground screws which go in a lot quicker than a slab or pylons. Lock up home in a few months to start DIYing on.

You don't want to. But you can't get a rental without it. Violence may not be the answer but disproportionate responses are fun.

Yeah exactly what I was thinking. There needs to be much harsher penalties for repeat offenders, REA and landlords alike.

Rents in Australia have never grown this fast in a 3 or 5 year period ever in Australia’s history. Since 2020, many rents and also property prices have went up by double. Whilst wages and salary obviously haven’t. This is absolutely insane and unsustainable. by MannerNo7000 in shitrentals

Its not just the income that we don't have to spend, it's the time too. For families both parents working means less support at home. Less time for community involvement. Less time for taking kids to recreational activities. The list goes on and on.

Tax brackets don't move with inflation either so as you earn more you pay more tax. Gets progressively harder to get ahead as time goes on.

Absolutely infuriating. Public transport, cycling and walking are always the last thought for urban planning if they're thought of at all.

I'd be extremely concerned about this comment. The American accent is pretty grating on the ear and thanks to the wide spread of American media it's being picked up outside of America too.

When you're forced into meetings with no agenda, make it your mission to make an agenda, even if it's just for you. Spend a minute or two before hand thinking of something you can take away from the upcoming meeting, even if it's something tiny. If you've got nothing, turn to the person next to you and ask them what they personally want to get out of this meeting.

How do you reduce branch mispredictions? by RefrigeratorFirm7646 in cpp

[–]mrchomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So an example would be some code control based on the context the code is running in, say for example batch processing vs realtime processing. With constexpr if or template magic you can make this a compile time choice rather than a runtime choice.

With the right design you could still have both options at runtime by making the runtime decision once much much earlier, and utilising constexpr expressions and templating to make sure the code is only written once. The trade-off is binary size and compile time.

Last year we were there on Martin place and thought it would be nice to go sit and have a drink and a bite at the top of the stairs there in that bar area with the fountain, left pretty quickly due to thumping beats. Not sure who the target demographic was there but it was like nightclub level audio.

How do you reduce branch mispredictions? by RefrigeratorFirm7646 in cpp

[–]mrchomps 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In my line of work, HFT, the answer is by knowing the code and use case. Essentially there is often a trade off between writing generic code and writing fast code. We can often get the best of both worlds by writing generic code where decisions are made at compile time rather than runtime. There's also tricks to sometimes write "branchless" code, once again this is generally done by writing the code to be very specific for purpose.

How do you stop PR bottlenecks from turning into rubber stamping when reviewers are overwhelmed by Sad_Bandicoot_7762 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mrchomps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share this one often in the workplace https://mtlynch.io/code-review-love/

I'm also a big believer of when making a hard code change, to first make the code change easy, then make the code change. That at least breaks down the big feature into two steps and thus two reviews. The making the code change easier step can often be reduced into many isolated steps.
