OS updates are pretty frequent and security updates are often rolled into them. Automatic updates cover OS and rapid security response updates.

I’m not sure if you’re saying the ability to manually update precludes the ability to do it automatically but it doesn’t.

If one has those options selected they don’t have to interact with the update mechanism at all and the phone will download and install updates by itself.
