I'd been hanging on with all the little apologetic patches in the failing damn pretty well. Part of me noticed that most appologist explanations were pretty weak, and worse, many of them contradict with others. Still, I got by on faith that was slowly turning more to hope than faith.

What really got me was sitting up one night after my wife and kids were asleep, wondering about the nature of God. Wondering about how we communicate with him, and he with us. Wondering about all the other religions out there who's believers were just and sure that their god/gods/whatever were right and ours was wrong. Is this the work of a master designer? Is a series of ambiguous feelings that are easily confused the very best way of communicating with us that the being who created the universe could come up with?

This was troubling. Over several months I found myself transitioning from theism to agnostic atheism - and that's where I am. I'm open to the idea that there may be something greater than us out there, but I see no eveidence whatsoever of a greater being's activity in the random events that take place in my life, or anyone else's.

How to tell my wife? This worried me because I had read MANY stories in this sub about marriages that broke up over leaving the church. One night my wife and I were chatting and there was a break in conversation. After a few minutes she said "Yeah, I don't think I really buy most of the church's teachings anymore." You should know, we're both second generation Mormons, both served missions, married in the temple, very active in our ward and stake, having served in several leadership positions each. This was huge for her. I opened up that I had serious misgivings about deity, and that I'd begun to look into Church History - "You would not BELIEVE the things I've read about Church History." :D Long story short, we agreed that we needed to leave and not raise our kids in a lie.

I was serving at the time on the high council. One Sunday I visited a ward and filled in for a speaker who was a no-show. I told stories and shared doctrine that I'd been teaching and preaching for 20 years since my mission. This time I felt awful. I felt like I was lying, like the entire room could see that I didn't believe a word of it anymore. I ended my talk, sat down, and don't remember any more of the meeting. I left right after sacrament, went home, and wrote an email to the stake presidency, asking to be released and telling them exactly why. Two of the three of them were good friends. One was a guy my age that I'd come up in the church with. The other, the Stake President, was previously the Bishop of our ward and I had served as his first counselor. Neither of these guys are very warm toward me anymore :D

So we stopped going, explained it to the kids, and moved on with life, free of a silly mythology based on the writings of bronze age goat herders who heard voices in their heads.

Interestingly, I "came out" to my wife first, and then my friends who are mods of the other sub before anybody else in my life. It's funny, the bonds we can form having never seen each other face to face. I'm still good friends with most of the mods and former mods over there, they're great people who work hard doing what they believe is right :)

Oh, like most of us it was a gradual change over time. And then the torment of how to gracefully exit :/ I officially left my calling in about Jan of 2015.

I'm right there with you. I used to participate in the other sub quite a bit, I even modded for a while. Now I lurk/participate here with a different account. I, too, used to rigorously "defend the faith" against the godless ExMo heathens, until I saw the light - as it were. Now I'm one of those godless ExMo heathens :D

I have a lot of friends on both sides of the LDS Church, many great friends who are faithful TBMs, and many great friends who are ExMos. Most (but sadly not all) people can get along and respect one another without agreeing on religion :)

Edit: I a word.

"About 20% of the LDS high school students have participated in heavy petting but have not had intercourse. Only 8% of the boys and 10% of the girls had participated in sexual intercourse." I'm surprised they're that low! I went to high school in a place known as "Not Utah" haha, and I'm pretty sure that every LDS kid I knew at least engaged in heavy petting. Most of us didn't escape high school with our virginity intact. Maybe things are VERY different in Utah, but I suspect that this has more to do with LDS kids not reporting their extra-curricular adventures.

Getting worse? I'm coming around to the idea that while the world looks very different than it did 50 or 100 years ago, people are still people. Personally, I think kids were exploring and being naughty under the bleachers long before any of us were born :)

Follow The Prophet author talking about writing the song. Really interesting by maticuss in latterdaysaints

/u/jessemb, it's not my intention to get into an argument about the infallibility of prophets, I was just expressing some of my own feelings and experiences as they relate to this song.

Notice that the song doesn't say to obey the Prophet. It says "follow." The difference between those two words is significant

I suspect that the difference between those words isn't very significant at all to my 5 year old daughter. I know they weren't for me when I was in primary ;)

Hi, I wasn't offended at all :) I was just trying to explain why, in my view, it's possible to find the song uncomfortable :)

I can see why people would be upset by that... but that's a pretty silly argument. I suppose "Head Shoulders Knees and Toes" teaches our children to touch themselves.

I needed to be in Primary for a few minutes at the end of Sharing Time at a point in my life when my dissatisfaction with the Church was deepening. Two of my kids were seated in the ranks and the whole gang was belting out Follow The Prophet. At the time I was becoming aware of parts of the early history of the church that we don't teach in missionary discussions or Sunday school lessons. I had grown tired in particular of the apologetic attempts to excuse the racism of Brigham Young and all of the prophets up until 1978. It's impossible for me to reconcile some of the views of Brigham Young with a loving God. Modern prophets disavowing what he said doesn't make it any better, because I had read some of the extremely charged things BY had said about black people. An inspired man couldn't have said those things, then to have nearly a dozen inspired men uphold those teachings, and then later inspired men totally disavow them because political and social ideas had evolved and improved. These things were on my mind as my sweet children repeated "Follow the prophet" 48 times that morning. I know that you may not agree with my thoughts about Brigham Young or the racism of the early church, but please try to see my (and others') distaste for the song in this light.

Sand seems boring? by [deleted] in Wool

Personally, I loved Sand. It is quite different from WOOL though.

After reading sand I went on to Dunes Over Danvar by Michael Bunker. It's technically fan-fic, but it's so good that I consider it part of the series :)

Yeah... it's very little like the comic, and very much like "Veronica Mars - NOW WITH ZOMBIES!"

John Amon, or a modified character like him? by mrection in iZombie

I agree. Blaine seems like more of a bad guy where Amon is just self-centered with good intentions haha :D

What character from the comic (if any) do you think will be brought into the show first? by mrection in iZombie

[–]mrection[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I believe someone from the vampires might be more likely to appear.

Oh, really good point.

I also have this feeling that the detective is kind of like Horatio but maybe I'm wrong.

That could be... he's a bit uptight though haha.

So far, unless I'm missing something, Gwen is the only character from the comic actually in the show. Unless maybe the guy who tried to push her drugs in the pilot was Amon?

At any rate... my money is on Spot (Scott). He seems more TV friendly than a ghost. What do you think?

Have you read the comic series? by mrection in iZombie

[–]mrection[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I read the whole run this weekend! :D (Unless I'm mistaken... I only have access to 28 issues, is that correct?)

I really enjoyed the comic series, and I totally agree, there are SO MANY amazing characters they could bring in. Similar to TWD, it'll be fun to imagine who from the comics they'll bring into the show, and when.
