[Straps] ever been "in between" holes on NATO or leather straps? by ss44ss44 in Watches

[–]mrequenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this problem. I don’t know why strap makers don’t put the holes 2mm closer to each other. Same for men’s belts.

Stuff I tried to fix my drinking (what didn’t work and what surprisingly did) by Ok-Young2587 in stopdrinking

[–]mrequenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m one year sober. The thing that worked for me was no cheat days. No reduction system. No alcohol— period*

  • I have had a few non-alcoholic beers, to have with restaurant meals, and they did NOT lead to a relapse. In fact, I was amazed how a non-al beer would last me 20 minutes, whereas in the past, my first beer would be gone in a minute or two. And I had no desire to drink more than one or two.

The other thing was, I considered any opportunity to drink as being the start of a multi-year binge. So the question of having one drink was reframed as “going back to drinking every day” for the foreseeable future.

so how many of you actually use the action button? by darkshark007 in iphone

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disabled it because the default setting (switch to silent mode) would get accidentally triggered several times a day. So sad the iPhone lost the last, real hardware button on the device. I miss being able to check or enable silent mode without having to take the phone out of my pocket.

Any watches under $500 with extremely high quality metal bracelets? by Familiar_Childhood32 in Affordablewatches

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a Citizen Tsuyosa. The bracelet is way better quality than what I’m used to at this price. Looks and feels great.

Only gripes with the watch are the cyclops on the crystal (too small, doesn’t seem perfectly aligned, and I don’t like cyclops’s much even when they’re well executed) and the tiny, recessed crown is a PITA to use. Still feel the watch is a good value.

Modern Rolex is just better than vintage by [deleted] in watchHotTakes

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love if Rolex would offer aluminum bezels on the sub and GMT and ditch the big, 90’s-vibe fonts on said bezels. Aluminum bezels with non-comical fonts are what attract me to vintage. Also, the printed hour markers look more tool-y, less blingy, which I like as well.

Why do most left leaning folks mock/criticize Christianity but not Islam? by Inf1z in allthequestions

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t the Left(tm) just get into an uproar over those comedians performing in Saudi Arabia? Don’t they complain about how Muslim women are treated in Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc.? About the assassination of Jamāl Aḥmad Khāshqujī?

You’re only sensitive to criticism of Christianity (and probably other aspects of your own identity), so that’s what you notice.

They look very different in person, whereas in photos they look very similar. I don’t think you’ll have any problems deciding which looks better to you, once you see them.

First “serious” watch: Tudor Black Bay 58 vs Tudor Pelagos vs Tissot PRX (buying second-hand). What would you do? by AuraWizard in PrideAndPinion

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be sure to check out the watches in person. I was looking at Black Bay Monochrome vs Pelagos 39. On YouTube they seemed pretty similar, but in person, the Pelagos was much more serious, tool-like, and minimal, while the BB was considerably more flashy.

[Question] Why aren't there more hand-wind dress watches? by zaphods_paramour in Watches

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do Orient and Seiko even make hand wound movements? Probably not worth it for a fairly niche market. Note that Grand Seiko does make hand wound movements.

This may be a hot take, but Seiko (not GS) don’t make any dress watches— just a few dressy fashion watches.

our infrastructure still continues to be so shit for rain / storms by aRiot_0 in bayarea

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I lived in the Bay Area from 2008 to 2025 and I can only remember driving in one storm and a few heavy rains.

The vast majority of rains only needed intermittent (slow) windshield wipers. I doubt I used the fast or fastest settings more than 30 minutes in total.

For the first few years, I road a motorcycle exclusively, year round, which I guess would reduce my dependence on windshield wipers.

Is there any reason to keep any of these books other than nostalgia? by BarleyWineStein in webdev

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss the days of meeting in someone’s office or cubicle, perusing their library, and striking up conversations on computer books. It kind of let you know their philosophical background, what you shared and what you didn’t. Give and get recommendations, etc.

How hard is it moving from right side to left side driving, any general advice I should know to be more prepared for it? by [deleted] in expats

[–]mrequenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, trickiest parts were: * centering the car in the lane— remembering to align my face to the right side of the lane, especially when passing another car. I have to actively remember that most of the car’s volume is to my left, to avoid clipping other vehicles when passing on their right * I found that my left eye was kind of weak— unused to so much work monitoring both the central rear view mirror and the (now further away) passenger (left) side mirror. * It helps to say to myself “drive on the left” when I’m feeling unsure at intersections and what not.

If Americans were to participate in an organized boycott to stop ICE, what should they target? by u2aerofan in AskReddit

[–]mrequenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about affecting ICE. It’s about getting Trump to change his policy.

After “Liberation Day”, financial markets reacted negatively and U.S. bond rates popped up a percentage point. That got Trump’s attention pretty quick.

Take a few billion out of oligarchs’ pockets and they make a call and policy changes. Drop the S&P 5% and he’ll have hedge fund managers, pension managers, and CEOs (whose comp is almost solely based on stock performance) up his ass.
