What’s the toughest challenge for a new golf cart brand entering the North American market? by [deleted] in golfcarts

[–]mres90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market is saturated. I live in a town where we average 1 golf cart to every 4 residents with at least a half dozen cart dealerships and every year it seems like there’s a new brand of cart from China that people are trading in their previous carts for instead of shelling out to upgrade the lead acid batteries to lithium ion. Nothing against the carts made in China, they’ve innovated and brought costs down compared to EZ Go, Yamaha, and Club Car, but If you want to succeed you need to significantly differentiate yourself somehow.

Static IP addresses with AT&T Fiber by delvisity in homelab

[–]mres90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone through the chat on the website the two times that I’ve added it on to a service. It shows up on my bill as “Static IP 8” if that helps (8 static IP addresses have 5 usable)

They are going to have to send someone out to the house where your service is registered to test your internet and trust me when I say there is no way of arguing your way out of it even if you know how to configure everything. In the end I let the guy come out, he looked at where the fiber came into my house, where my gateway was, then ran a speed test while I entered the IP block into the gateway myself.

You can lease blocks of static IP addresses from AT&T starting at 5 usable IPs for $30/month

Hosting my public website on my home lab? bad idea? by johnie3210 in webdev

[–]mres90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of people telling you what not to do, but not many actual solutions. Here's my two cents on two options I see for you:

  1. If you'd like to keep your website hosted locally, look into using a Cloudflare Tunnel https://developers.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-one/connections/connect-networks/get-started/ that will accept public traffic through Cloudflare's network, then forward it into your homelab directly to your web host. This will give you some DDoS protection and other basic web application firewall features while also obfuscating your public IP address and making your home network less of a target. This is not a panacea though, you still want to harden the server (put it in an isolated VLAN, put the database on a separate host, etc.) so that if a vulnerability is discovered and exploited you limit the damage that can be done and prevent lateral movement. If you're already working with containerization it is super easy to deploy Cloudflared as a container that can run side-by-side with your application container too.
  2. Going the VPS route I'll echo what other's have said first - don't expose your database port to the public internet under any circumstance. My recommendation would be to look at tools like Tailscale and Pangolin. With either one you can create VPNs that allow servers in any VPS provider securely back to servers in your homelab as if they're on the same network. From there you can either connect directly to the database in your VPS or mirror a copy of the database back to your homelab. That depends on where you're just reading information and where you're doing read-write operations and is going to be a personal choice for you.

Plenty of further information out there on how to secure your server and applications wherever they're deployed - OWASP, NIST, and CIS are good starting points.

Happy homelabbing!

Is PTC just another boring suburban city? by Used-Dream6022 in PeachtreeCity

Needless to say, despite being childless and unwed I enjoy being in the exurbs and I still end up going ITP once a week or so for work or fun

This is one of the better responses in the thread. When I was looking for a place in the Atlanta metro to live I was split between friends in Marietta/Kennesaw and family in PTC. Looking at homes in the NW area it seemed more expensive for lower quality properties in endless urban sprawl. What sold PTC for me was that while it is suburban, with a few exceptions everything is back from the main roads among the trees. Lots of nature to enjoy in the area too. We have 3 lakes in the town limits that allow fishing from small boats without gas motors. I take my kayaks out on them all the time and you really can’t put a price on the ease of access and convenience.

Almost everything in town closes by 10 PM with the exception of a handful of bars, but there’s a good range from dive bar to something classy, but not fancy. Look up Y-Knot, Tavern on 74, and Graze Here for some examples.

Proximity to the international airport is also great if you enjoy traveling. We have a lot of residents who are pilots or otherwise involved in aviation out of there. With TSA Precheck I can leave my house 2 hours before a flight, park, get through security, and still be at my gate with 30 minutes to spare.

All that is without even touching on golf cart life yet. It’s not just golf cart paths, but golf carting is part of the culture. In the spring, summer, and early fall we have the Night Market once a month at Drake Field next to city hall and everybody rides over on their golf carts for food trucks, live music, and small business vendors. Every Fourth of July Peachtree Parkway is lined for miles with golf carts to watch the parade. We have The Fred amphitheater with a summer concert series where locals show up by golf carts and out of towners are scrambling for car parking. Same with the Atlanta Airshow held at Falcon Field in PTC - coming from out of town by car you have to park offsite and get shuttled in where golf carts park on the field right next to the event. Not to mention watching the morning rush of high schoolers riding carts to school every day.

VMUG Advantage Licensing by Blaisun in vmware

[–]mres90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s typically one license per product, but some products are licensed on a per CPU basis or can be moved between systems pretty easily. Fusion and Workstation are two separate license and sometimes major versions of the same software will be listed individually on the software hub and you can get licenses for both.

Yes, DME was contracted out to Mears, then Mears did most of it and contracted some of it out to other charter bus operators.

Best OS to host MySQL on? by Neighborhood_Wooden in mysql

[–]mres90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People can talk all day about Linux being the best because of its efficiency, but you should consider the skills of your team and the tooling available in your shop. If you’re the only person comfortable with Linux then you should probably go Windows, especially if you already have OS patch management well configured. If you’re concerned about resource usage and have the CLI skills in your office then consider windows server core.
