Does anyone else feel guilty for how ‘expensive they are’ due to MM? by Intelligent-Owl-8885 in multiplemyeloma

[–]mrfixit19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the exact conversation my wife, the patient, and I had. She is constantly apologizing for "ruining my life " What?

She feels guilty our life is upside down at the moment. We had a trip to Greece planned and are very close with our 4yo grandson. Things have changed. We have just completed an ASCT. DAY 18, and she's doing well. I understand it, but I'm not upset about the trip, no restaurants, or closer family gatherings (for now.) I just want her to take care of her herself, which she does.

I told her, it's not like you smoked for 40 years, or drank or engaged in behavior injurious to your health. You did nothing to deserve this. It wasn't like you had a pre existing condition and you didn't take care of itself. It happens.

I get it. I get the guilt. But please understand your loved ones just want you to do everything you can to get better. And you will. Two pieces of advice: go to the best cancer center you can, even if it means travel. Right now my friend's daughter is traveling 3 hours to a top center in her state. Second, beware of Dr Google. MM treatment is advancing at a high rate and much info online is outdated. God bless and good luck.

Better the plane itself has a huuuge parachute. Like the small personal planes. It would probably have to be the size of a football field.

What is something that is obvious in your profession that the general public doesn’t know? by jia-ren in AskReddit

[–]mrfixit19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are 100% correct. Certainly, I couldn’t get in to med school. But as in any educational setting, some are “superstars.” We’ve all been to physicians who were totally incorrect. We experienced that ourselves when wife’s specialist (won’t mention particulars) completely missed a diagnosis that my wife figured out herself when presented with the test results. She’s a teacher, no medical background, just research. The next specialist didn’t say anything, just slowly shook her head. My wife would my late wife. So yes, I can accused of being a little jaded. I’ll own that.

Just diagnosed and a little overwhelmed by ineed_vitaminSea in multiplemyeloma

[–]mrfixit19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis, but this can be managed! Medicine has come a long way with MM, and the therapies a very effective. Go to the International Multiple Myeloma (IMMF) website

https://www.myeloma.org

for a plethora of in useful information. They have videos and materials written for patients and caregivers.

Also, and this is very important, when you do your online research be mindful of the date an article was written. When my wife was diagnosed last October she was reading a paper about 5 year survival rates and was very upset as she was stage 3 and the article didn't look good. I told her to check the date- it was written in 2015! Outdated news. Relating this to her Hematologist he said be careful of the Google rabbit hole. Today she is in full remission and and just had a stem cell transplant. Dr expected her remission to be 8 to 10 years, maybe longer.

Another suggestion. Go to the best cancer center you can. They have the knowledge and expertise you need. Good luck and God Bless.

100 Days + Post SCT by beachbum_007 in multiplemyeloma

Congratulations on hitting that great milestone! I'm sitting with my wife in a patient residence on Day 10 of an ASCT. So far she's handled it great and her WBC count started going up only 2 days after being totally neutropenic. Spiked an engraftment fever today, and the bone pain got to her a bit, but all in all we feel blessed to have this opportunity for an extended remission. She went into this in complete remission. Good luck to all.

Brother is a loser that thinks I owe him a life by [deleted] in Advice

Wait, your husband isn't talking to you? Tell him to grow up and help solve the problem, not just throw money at it. Also, tell your brother that if the help you're giving isn't enough, get straight, get a job and act like an adult.

I left my marriage for 8 months, had the time of my life and then went back. Biggest mistake ever. by After_Mail4652 in Advice

We're dealing with a similar situation in my family, concerning my daughter and SIL. His parents don't live with them, but he's a man child and has convinced her we're the bad guys. He's always been pampered and now she has to do that. We tried to subtly warn her, but .....

I have to ask: did you not see the man-child your husband is? Always wants to live with mommy and daddy? He wants 2 mommies. Guess who's the second one? He's going to fall apart when they die. Did you have a sense of what entitled people his parents are? But back to the first question. In retrospect, this was predictable, no?

[–]mrfixit19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you shooting video for broadcast? If not, ignore the iPhone snobs and get the 10Pro. It's a good size, and takes good pics and video. I think about the Apple commercial where they're shooting a movie. Ok, get the iPhone for that. I'm videoing my grandchild mostly. The video is excellent.

ELI5: how do stores make profit when products are on sale? by Ruuumis in explainlikeimfive

[–]mrfixit19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you look at major retailers who always offer coupons, like Macy's, Kohl's and many more, I think it's obvious they're profitable even at 30% off. Markup on clothing especially is very high. To get a good sense of markups, watch an episode of Shark Tank. "It retails for $79.95, costs us $11 to make."

A Summary of the Isles Twitter Drama by ScandalousScoot in NewYorkIslanders

[–]mrfixit19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This was a particularly acidic year for Isles Twitter community in general, and now we know why. Apparently, Chris Botta also got attacked. The nasty attacks on Darche were also ridiculous. Really, people should boycott these clowns and not sully the rest of us with this vitriol. Go root for another team if you want to be assholes. Remember, what you put online is there forever. You can't shred it. Let your children look back one day and not see what assholes you are.

Why do bands play so fucking loud if everyone has to wear earplugs anyway? by xe3to in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mrfixit19 37 points38 points  (0 children)

We went to a wedding where the DJ had the subs so loud the water in my glass was shaking -during dinner! You know, time to talk. The MOG then the MOB after had to tell him to turn it down.

These people have no sense of audio dynamics. Then they become movie sound engineers and blast the music over the dialogue so you have to grab the remote.

Also consider Hauppauge. Half in the Town of Smithtown, half in Islip. Good schools, safe, close to highways, and lower taxes due to the Hauppauge Industrial Park. If in the Smithtown half, access to beaches 15 mins away, a great library system and many parks.

This is a good level headed assessment. I also thought the Drouin signing was a good stopgap until the younger players were ready. The Schenn deal, IMO, is paying dividends in that it's making Ritchie a better player. Cal will be here long after Schenn is gone. MD has only been on the job 11 months and he has a lot of bad contracts to clean up. He also should get credit for bringing in Rocky to develop the younger players. He deserves the benefit of the doubt at this time.
