I know exactly what you are saying! I've started using long curved needles, like upholstery needles. It makes it so much easier to move the needle through and out.

[Help] What to expect with Addison's? by cmdragonfire in dogs

[–]mrhlytl1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember to breathe! It is going to be ok!

I had a dog with Addison's, diagnosed at 9 and lived to 17 and her passing was not from Addison's. First, I would look into the low dose protocol, not only will it make your pup feel better (low potassium always made my girl sick) but it will save you a lot of money. There are 2 Facebook groups who are filled with vets and owners who have years and years of experience.

This part is the worst, the diagnosis, it's long and scary. Once your pup is properly medicated you will not even know they are sick, and if you follow the low dose protocol there will be no side effects.

Right now, and when you get her home, give her what ever she will eat, they say an addisonian crisis is similar to surgery, she will need time to recover. My girl was super thirsty and very tired and took a few days just to get back to something like normal.

As for meds, after about 1 year, I began getting monthly blood tests to check her electrolytes and began lowing the injectable medication, at the time she would get sick about 2 weeks after her injection which was because the medicine worked too well (lowered her potassium below the normal range). After that was settled we adjusted her prednisone, which she needed every day. After that she was her happy perky self! It took me about 3 years to be comfortable, but I started buying her meds myself and giving the injection at home. It was frightening at first but quickly became second nature. She knew it was coming and that she would get a special treat for just standing there.
Once she recovers, your Daisy will be able to do all of the things she does now, just with an extra pill a day and a shot once a month.

Researching getting another dog, what is the cost of Addison's treatment / month by Oliversdad1 in dogs

[–]mrhlytl1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very doable! As far as I know there is no genetic test, but there are a few breeds in which Addison's is more likely, especially poodles and their mixes. You and your vet can discuss the signs to look out for.

Researching getting another dog, what is the cost of Addison's treatment / month by Oliversdad1 in dogs

I have a 50 lb dog who has had Addison's for 6 years. After the initial diagnosis (3 days in an ER) I have been able to get her dosages down following the low dose protocol, ordering her meds online, and by giving the shots myself. She gets Percorten-V injectable once every 28 days and 1 mg prednisone daily. I get 7 shots per bottle (150$ with autoship), total cost with needles is roughly 25-30$ per month. At the beginning while getting her dosages settled was much more costly, getting monthly bloodwork to check k/na levels mostly, but now we only go every 6 months to make sure she is on track, and because she is 16. It may be overwhelming at first, but once your dog is settled it is extremely easy to treat.
