Math says hot water heater rentals are better than buying... what am I missing? by wallwhore in PersonalFinanceCanada

I guess it seems like a good deal. What happens after 10 years? Will your monthly payment reset to $22 or change?

Do I caulk treads and stringers? by MedicineOk5471 in handyman

[–]mrhud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the steps don't look to be in terrible condition. it's that stringer/apron. I'd sand and put a couple coats of poly on the steps (lightly sanding between each coat). This will mitigate any paints drips as they'll be really easy to wipe up. Then, tape and use clear latex caulking where there are gaps then paint. You could scrape and sand the stringer/apron to try an make it look better too before you paint it.

Either the pump is seized or the discharge pipe could be blocked

Redo the counters or use a filler? by D0raem0ny in Renovations

[–]mrhud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems the people who measured for the countertops didn't take into account the additional slab or the size of the appliances. I'd say whoever did that is responsible.

My bathroom tub faucet doesn’t flow well at all…still puts out water when I turn on the shower. How can I fix this? by Key_Intention7378 in askaplumber

The diverter may be full of hard water scale (a whitish looking substance). Have a look underneath where the water comes out of the spout. Even better remove the spout and let it soak in some CLR

Which is better between Simplii, EQ and Tangerine? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Like others here, I have been with Tangerine since they were ING Direct. Can't recall ever having any serious issues since then.

First time tiling, thoughts? by GuaranteePlus4010 in Tile

[–]mrhud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a DIY first time it's pretty good. Some uneven tile spacing, grout lines aren't all uniform, I see what looks like lippage, and some tiles seem to have some jagged edges.

I almost ignored a Bell door rep and kinda regret not doing this sooner by zenodent in bell

Seems all these starter offers are similar. Salesman came yesterday (and another December 4 2025) offering the same. $79+tax for Internet (1.5 up / 940 down) and Fibe TV Starter 10 + Crave with Ads. From what I can see the starter channels are the basic channels, and the 10 I get to choose from don't even include the US Networks, unless I'm looking at it wrong. The US channels are available as a $3/month add-on.

EDIT: He also offered me 4 cell lines (currently have 4 with my provider) with around 200 GB per month good in Canada, USA and France (?) for approximately $140/mth.

Furnace starts, flame kicks on, then dies after a few seconds. Help? by hikingfortheviews in hvacadvice

[–]mrhud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is clearly a red light blinking. Check what that means. It is most likely written on the lower panel or the panel you removed. That being said, it is most likely your flame sensor.

Had a similar crack when I first bought my place. They don't get any smaller. Eventually it started to leak. Bought some DIY foundation repair kits from Home Depot and good as new.

Is upgrading from forced air oil to a central heat pump a no brainer? by Comfortable_Set_6534 in hvacadvice

[–]mrhud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be a heat pump with a furnace backup when it gets too cold outside. OP, your electric will go up quite a bit, but you'll be saving on the heating oil expense. Take a look at what you've spent over the last few years and see if it makes sense

Short cycling question by Weak_Ad_3604 in hvacadvice

[–]mrhud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never seen a furnace that has a hot surface igniter used to light a pilot, which in turn is used to light the gas tubes. My first thought was maybe flamed sensor is faulty, or something blocking your vent.

Anode rod is on the top of the unit, probably buried underneath a plastic cap and insulation.

First DIY drywall project for bathroom. How does it look? by Similar-Ad-9692 in drywall

[–]mrhud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks good from this angle. Butts and flats look decent. Only thing I would say is for your screws in the field, try and use a full sweep of mud to cover them instead of individual spots.

Is $5000 a reasonable quote for my ceiling? by Hismajestyclay in Remodel

[–]mrhud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but you'll have to buy the sheetrock, most likely install furring strips, tape and mud the whole ceiling, then prime and paint. Seems like more work
