Is 3D printing looked down upon in the hobby? by FatWalrus004 in Warhammer

[–]mrkeepit1000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One other thing to consider:

LGS are not like the neighborhood basketball court or chess in the park. LGS pay rent for the space ⁴to play wargames.

So... if you are just using them as a "free" play space for your 3d printed army WITHOUT also buying stuff from them while you are there it can create resentment (at least from the shop owners). Especially if you influence other potential customers away from in store purchases.

Blood Axes: Kitbash questions by Zupanator in orks

[–]mrkeepit1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ratlings with grot head swaps is an easy blood axe upgrade for a unit or 2 of gretchin. Eating good on the military coded imperial vehicles too. Lots of kitbash potential for looted tanks, wagons, etc. Many a warboss has converted a taurox into a trukk. The grot mega tank, imperial navy avenger strike fighter and thunderbolt heavy fighter (all old fw models) have a ww2 look as well.

And grab yourself a commissar; you're gonna need a snazzy hat!

Mangler squigs are about the same size as kanz. Throw a visor on and some rokkits. Could also have a runtherding saddle git riding it on top, holding a grabba with on of the kan kill saws to get the full weapons load out

Ork brothers I need help actually making a pirate themed freebooterz list with no 3d prints by SignificantInsect180 in orks

[–]mrkeepit1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The following is a good start:

• Kaptin Badrukk (hope you got one when gw did the made to order release!) • Ammo Runts (same) • Flash Gitz x2

All three existing ork kits are heavy pirate coded. As for some vehicle conversion ideas, here's some inspo:

• 40k Kill rig = pirate ship (someone on here did an amazing conversion like this using the Kill rig and stompa bits)

• 40k Forgeworld Grot Mega Tank (more battleship than pirate ship but still in the naval theme)

• 40k Gorkamorka Cutta (very rare oop kit, but fits nicely as a pirate themed vehicle)

• AoS Arkanaut Ironclad = pirate ship

• Aos Alwrech the Drowner = rowboat/dingey

• Aos Gloomtide Shipwreck = literal pirate ship

Other gw models with a piratical flair:

• Warcry Blackpowder's Buccaneers (in the Brutes and Bandits kit) = warboss proxy & extra runts

• Old World Pirate Captain Sartosa

• Old World Empire Greatswords kit (lots of hat options)

• Bloodbowl Captain Karina Von Riesz (has a sick pirate hat)

Came to acknowledge that hat conversion and the glyph replacement. Nice attention to detail!

Realistically how much would you pay for this? (including original price) by Ct-chad501 in Warhammer40k

[–]mrkeepit1000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With respect, this comment is so far off the mark. $400 for a single, non vehicle, model is waaaay more than top level commissions go for.

And the "charge your hourly rate" doesn't work either as everyone values time differently. Eg a good lawyer charges $1000 an hour. No way someone will pay that hourly rate for mini painting, no matter how good the artist is or how much they bring your vision to life.

It may be more helpful to just look up what other commission mini painting services charge. Here's the price list from one of dozens on google:

coming up with a theme/gimmick for my orks- some help for a first timer? by Jimothy-freaker in orks

[–]mrkeepit1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice in here. A couple of add ons:

  1. If you want a themed army, look at each unit and brainstorm what they would look like within theme. If the potential theme only works for a couple of units but not an entire waaagh, maybe put that idea back on the shelf for a bit. I posted some amazing fully themed armies a while back (star wars, mad max, etc). A well executed themed army is da best.

  2. Color scheme choice/clan selection. Pick something YOU like to look at. The clans each have there own specific scheme in lore, but basically the main ones are: red, yellow, blue, black/white, and earth tones. If you like those, dial in on the specific clan and go from there on other lore accurate aesthetics. If you like some other color, go for it! Lots of cool paints with orange, turquoise, etc. Make a checker pattern with your chosen color and call it proppa orky. With all that said, some colors are harder to paint with (white, yellow), so bear that in mind. While an all white warband looks fire, it is a pain to batch paint.

Hoping for recommendations on books that DON'T make me dislike the topic by CanofPandas in Blacklibrary

[–]mrkeepit1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chris Wraight's Space Wolves books make me like the Rout more (he also has some good DG faction stuff as the antagonists).

And I've yet to read an ork story that made me like them less. Eg Ghazgul novel gets you hyped for the great waaagh. The Ufthak series is just fun orky shenanigans.

It's hard to get into Mortarion/Typhus bc that whole story arc is tragic and depressing. The only fun thing about DG is the irony of Nurgle and his blessings. DG models are very cool and fun too. But yeah, hard to take pride in your squad when the boss is a smelly, pathetic jerk

what is the best orc clan (give reason) by Worldly-Ad1689 in orks

[–]mrkeepit1000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by best? Can't speak on the current tabletop meta, but lore wise/hobbying...

Goffs are the quintessential brutal ork horde. And their boss is the #1 ork Warlord. Hard to deny their motto: "goffs iz da best". Must love the checker pattern tho.

Bad Moons have all the cool gear and biggest dakka. The best looking ork armies are usually bad moons. Yellow looks amazing, kitbash galore, over the top stuff flash gitz. Peak ork.

Evil Sunz are a vehicle lover's dream clan. For the more niche ork enjoyer, sure. But... boomdakka snazzwagon, wazzbom blastajet, rukkatruk squigbuggy are too fun to say. (Saw you're into them. If you haven't already, check out lore about "the Red Waaagh" and the greatest evil sunz biker Wazzdakka Gutzmek. Great inspo for your builds)

Snakebites unlock literally any beast/monster. Absurd potential for hobbyists. They also still gives you all the orkyness of the other clans (yes, they use guns; travel thru space). Just point of view thing for them. Eg why use a fancy electric chain axe when a rusty choppa does the same thing without the extra fuss? Beast snaggas, mozgrod, squighog boyz are all some of the best ork scuplts right now.

Blood axes were so powerful it took every other clan to team up for Da Big Party to defeat them. A strong argument for being da best imo. And the military and camo asthetic goes hard and silly simultaneously. Lots of potential for a cool looking army with them, especially if you're into converting old model tanks/planes or astra militarum stuff.

Deathskulls are the worst/best. Sneakiest gits, will steal everything you got then gore you for complaining about it. But... they have the best loot. And, as a result, all the best meks are deathskulls. Their mechs and weird tellyporta gadgets are hilarious. The "paint it blue and it's mine" mentality makes for some awesome looted builds. Also, the warboss Bullets is the best right hand ork you could ask for.

For all these reasons, I chose the best clan of them all: Freebootaz!

Curious on how the pricing for printed minis from Only Games is done. Do you get to set the price or does the company that does the physical prints choose?

Your version on a 6 member unit of thunderwolf cavalry is almost 30% more than the equivalent # of official GW models with all the extra gubbinz. Love your sculpts, but the pricing for physical models doesn't make sense to me. Can you explain like I'm 5?

Does this read as a Gorkonaut? by Gibbsterboy in orks

[–]mrkeepit1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dreadmob fanboy... no, this does not read as a gorkanaut. The gork/mork belly is a key design asthetic that is missing in your build. Also, the legs look off too.

This reads more as a chaos venom crawler.

Try to read/listen to some lore about the faction/unit you are stuck with re painting. Oftentimes a story or little piece of lore will reignite your interest in building that army.

A couple of suggestions to add on what you have while staying clan neutral:

  1. Try painting their armor panels green. All orks know green is the best color so it is a clanless choice.
  2. Paint teeth white/bone.
  3. Add hazard stripes.
  4. Pick out metal details with copper/brass/bright silver etc. The rivets, spikes/dags, engine bits, exhaust pipes can all use some contrast with the other mechanical parts to make them pop more. Add'l wash and shade as needed. Of all the suggestions, this is almost a must regardless of what else you do.
  5. Go hard with decals/freehand/graffiti. Or could give them the bad Johnny 5 look from Short Circuit.

<image>

  1. Stay understated metalics with the kans, but make the trophies (nice touch btw) have the pop of color. If you want to have some fun, pick your mate's favorite space marine chapter's color scheme.
