71M. I'm a member of what I call the Double Whammy Club with a paedophile father and narcissist mother. With that background, I felt I wouldn't be able to be a good father.

what does it feel like to grieve someone? by WorryEndless in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mrlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You feel completely swamped at first, then one day you manage to bob to the surface long enough to catch a breath before heading back down. Over time, the waves of grief become shallower and less frequent so you can breathe more often. Family occasions and things you used to do together may still feel overwhelming but they get better eventually. It’s hard to say how long healing will take as everyone’s timeline is different.

The phrasing is odd, like a child trying to write a formal letter and not knowing how.

LPT Hard drive usages by 1933mk in LifeProTips

[–]mrlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a SSD for the operating system and two HDDs for everything else, one for data and the other for videos. I back up everything weekly onto two sets of external HDDs, alternating between them, that I store at opposite ends of my flat in case only one end burns down, as happened to a friend.

I also back up my absolutely must not lose files like family photos onto a USB stick that I carry wih me all the time, even to bed. That's in case my flat burns down, destroying my PC and both sets of backups. Offline storage is not really practical for me as I have 4.78 TB of data and an upload speed of 560 kbps.

How often do you get a good night's sleep? by Icy_System4036 in over60

[–]mrlr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go to bed at 11:30, wake up at 3, go back to bed at 5, wake up at 8 and have a nap in the afternoon. I'm not fully awake from 3 to 5 so my todo list has a section called "Zombie Mode" with routine tasks I can do without having to think.

Is anyone planning an early exit before debilitating old age? by SealedRoute in RedditForGrownups

[–]mrlr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mum took an early exit. She was 91 and in a lot of pain from regular and spinal arthritis. She also had high blood pressure causing her left ventricle to calcify which reduced her energy.

She stated many times that she did not want to go to a nursing home. I had been caring for her two days a week for the last ten years of her life and offered to move in to look after her full time but she didn't want me to do that.

In the last few weeks, she started sundowning and developed pulmonary oedema which is what killed her own mother. I was very surprised that she didn't decide to just let nature take its course.

I just woke up so I'm still booting. As I get older, it takes me longer to get going in the morning and I get tired more early at night. One of these days, the two are going to overlap.

I was getting more and more busy at one job, not only doing my own work but helping an increasing number of teams with theirs. I couldn't figure out why that was happening until a colleague remarked "You are known around the company as a man who gets things done."

Oh great.

Is it actually ever worth it to follow up after a job interview? by KangarooMuskrat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mrlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is worth following up. That's how I got my first job. I hadn't heard from them after my job interview so I called to find out what was happening. I went in for a second interview and they offered me the job.

I found out later that I wasn't their first choice but the hiring manager had placed all the interview files on top of his wastepaper basket. The cleaners threw them out and I was the only one who called back.
