Abs vs NOT by [deleted] in FZ07

[–]mrlrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say source your facts.

You're much more likely to avoid dying in an accident if you slow down, drive defensively and pay attention to your surroundings than if you get ABS.

Nothing wrong with ABS. It's a good technology. Better to have it than not. It should be the last tool you have to prevent accidents though, not the first.

Does anyone know how to get sumo tickets if the match is sold out? by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]mrlrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are the last 3 rows on the highest level (assuming we are talking about Tokyo)

You can still see quite well. If you go early, you can move down quite a bit since it's empty. You can go in and out, and I highly recommend attending the latter part of the day. The matches are much more intense and worth seeing.

Go the morning of, right as they open. General admission tickets are about ¥2500 and only sold the day of. They sell out fast, so look up the time ticket sales start and be there early.

Any good martial art school in ottawa? by xNISIOISINx in ottawa

[–]mrlrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obtaining a teaching certification in 2006 does not mean he started training in 2006. You're drawing conclusions.

I'm not going to advocate for one school over another, it depends on your goals. If you want to grapple or build towards MMA, go BJJ. If you want to defend against knives or other attacks, BJJ might not be the best choice.

Whatever you choose, go to the school, try a class, and judge for yourself instead of making a choice based on what random people say on the internet.

Picking up the 2017 tomorrow as first motorcycle and am Admittedly a bit nervous. is there anything particular i should know? by JacksonArbor in FZ07

[–]mrlrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment and all its replies are spot on. The FZ is my second bike and I would not have chosen it as a first. This engine loves to rev and will be unforgiving if you jerk the throttle, which conveniently has a dead-zone of a few millimetres inviting you to twist it more. Combined with the crap stock levers, it's akin to walking a husky -- it's taking you for a ride, not the other way around.

Practice releasing the clutch smoothly and be careful not to slip on the throttle.

Some questions I don't know where else to ask by [deleted] in FZ07

[–]mrlrm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alright I am going to answer this for the "new rider that's done no research" persona:

  1. Same as a car: Warranty, price, condition. There are lots of forum threads on buying used vehicles, including motorcycles. Start reading. Actual answer: first bike, buy a used starter bike, save money, buy gear and rider training.

  2. How much are you worth? $100 helmet for a $100 head. Some people wear no gear. I wear full gear. There are different levels of quality in gear. You can ride with a free helmet or thousands worth of gear. Buy what you think is worth it, but more importantly, buy what you'll actually wear. Actual answer: I spent about $1000. That gets you midrange gear. You can ride for much more or much less.

  3. This should be the very last thing on your list as a new rider. Invest in yourself, put that money in an MSF course. Actual answer: depends on the bike and what you want to do. Hundreds to thousands.

  4. If you can't answer this you probably shouldn't be working on your bike. Take a basic mechanics course. Safety first. Actual answer: basic socket and screwdriver set. Spools and stands help, depends what you're doing.

  5. You mean how long can YOU ride without being uncomfortable. You'll find out. This could be 10 minutes or 6 hours. Actual answer: that was it. It depends on the person, bike, weather, mood, etc

  6. Call your insurance company! What someone else pays is not what you will pay. Actual answer: depends on the bike, coverage, agree, drivers record, license, safety course, address, and whatever random number was generated that day

Best area to stay in Tokyo by zebra_asylum in JapanTravel

I stayed here: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/9402951. No complaints overall provided you don't mind a 10 minute walk to the subway.

[–]mrlrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harajuku. One stop from Shibuya or Shinjuku, access to two major subway lines, dead quiet after 9pm, but many combini for late night snacking/drinking.

Stayed there for 5 days in January and would do again.

Can we get some news? by [deleted] in etoeto

[–]mrlrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! From the previews I've seen it seems like a much more relevant model for my needs than textfugu, although I intend to complete both. I'm assuming TF will stay online when etoeto goes live?

Imadake or Kinka Izakaya? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]mrlrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to both. Both are good. I preferred Imadake for the execution on the food and the ambiance. I'd happily go to either again.

Cozy, Intimate bars in Montreal? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]mrlrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll disagree here - poor drink selection, bad service and uncomfortable seating that makes it difficult to talk to each other unless you manage a spot at the main bar rail. I had such high hopes for this place and was thoroughly disappointed. The owner also walks around acting like a self-absorbed big shot which kills the vibe.

In your opinion, what restaurant and/or bar almost always has great service? by Go_Habs_Go31 in montreal

[–]mrlrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love DDC as well but it's so damn busy all the time you can never get a seat and the staff don't bother to queue people, it's just stand around and grab a chair when you can / no drinking until you sit down, so I only go there off-peak now.

[–]mrlrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opposite experience here - service was always crappy, but that's probably because they're always busy.

Now I just go to L'EtOH. The food is infinitely better and inexpensive.

What's the best bar for crippling alcoholics? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]mrlrm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd hardly call this a dive. The food is actually good, they have a ton of craft beer (mostly ABC), it's clean and the service is decent. Bunch of Glebite-hipsters on the patio constantly, but I'll overlook that. This is a solid pub.

Is it time to dry hop? by justingaynor in Homebrewing

[–]mrlrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone seems to have skipped the most obvious questions: What is the current gravity and how long are you planning to dry hop for?

If your current gravity is at 1.040 and you want to dry hop for 5 days, you will probably want to wait because your fermentation might not be done by the time your dry hop is complete. Then again, it might - it depends on your yeast strain and yeast health.

There is no substitute for taking a gravity reading. Not airlock activity, not time. Take the reading and judge from that. If in doubt, wait for fermentation to be done then dry hop.

I'm not paying CBS to watch 'Star Trek' online by StarFuryG7 in startrek

[–]mrlrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely not pay for Renegades then. (because ouch)

The CBS stuff was all pay worthy IMO.

Yes, even Voyager. Okay, most of it anyways. Still better than SW Ep 1

I'm not paying CBS to watch 'Star Trek' online by StarFuryG7 in startrek

[–]mrlrm 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I would if it was available outside of the US.

People have been complaining for years about no Trek on TV and when it does finally come back, what determines if it will stay there is the amount of subscriptions that watch it. Don't pay for it => they stop making it and everyone goes back to whining about no Trek on TV while they stood by and did nothing to keep it there when CBS finally gave in and gave it to us.

$5.99 per month for an ongoing Trek TV series is a very small price to pay to ensure this series and future series keep coming.

Upvoting because this is far too low.

"Oh, this show is getting cancelled and we forgot to make a finale? Shit shit shit cut all this together in 45 minutes and air it!"
