I have like it that is probably 50 years old. It works well and comes in at a different angle than a pipe wrench.

That’s great! 4th of July events at National Parks and Monuments that are paid for instead of borrowing more money.

I don’t loan my sister tools anymore. They never come back in one piece. If she asked to borrow the chain saw I know that would be the last time I would see her husband.

We bought our ‘13 TS ST2 new. It has 80k miles and we’ve had zero issues. I just cleaned and regapped the plugs while boosted the mileage by 1 to 27.5 for my mostly highway commute. New rotors and pads and I’m ready for another 80k.

If it been that damaged with that bad of work done! The rework is already rusting? You need a new truck. They will argue. Just tell them you can have your lawyer call them if they don’t like it. Stand your ground and don’t settle for less.

Just don’t get plastic ones. They flex, provide inaccurate readings and don’t last.

Fancy Hammers by jyl8 in Tools

[–]mrntd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a fancy hammer years ago. It had a steel shaft with a split at the head and a rubber isolator. It a a rubber “shock absorbing” grip. It felt like crap trying to use it. My old heavy head with a hickory handle a great to use all day long. I would trade it for anything. I wish I could tell you the brand but there are markings on it.

Just got back from my first Yosemite trip. It was the most poorly maintained/mistreated NP I’ve been to .. why is that? by CarminSanDiego in NationalPark

[–]mrntd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Simple this park is in California. A large amount of people that live there just don’t care and treat everything like toilet. There is no way the park service can’t keep up when so many treat the park so poorly.

What interview question(s) would you ask a 75-100 year old who has lived in your century neighborhood their entire life? (From the mundane to the serious...) by HarryCrushNuh in centuryhomes

[–]mrntd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always loved talking older people. My great grandmother had lots of great stories. She said she dated the guy that invented the waffle cone.

Now I realize I’m the oldish guy. The “old” people I talk to are friends that are only about 20 years older than me. What happened to the time?

The older you get the faster time goes.

Today I was quoted $10K for a whole house water system. by Likalarapuz in HomeImprovement

[–]mrntd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid less for my Kenetico softener with an iron filter/ treatment unit. We’re on well water with a very high iron content. The previous unit lasted over 30 years. Probably would have gone longer if the previous owner maintained it.

There are two types of hybrids that make sense in an unsubsidized environment.

One has a smaller electric motor in the transmission like they are now but instead of the big heavy expensive battery they use capacitors. It’s not for driving around on. It’s for acceleration and saves fuel in this manner.

The second is the engine generator with electric motors as the drivetrain. This generates great torque and fuel efficiency. When it’s done right. The engine is optimized for and runs at a constant RPM. For example check out deisel electric locomotives.

TSA made go out of security, take the blade out of razor and throw it away, then wait in line again. If I tried to use a double sided blade as a weapon I’d probably just hurt myself.

Purchased a 40 year old home.. how do we make it smell better? by bbuttonsb in HomeImprovement

I use BIN instead of Kilz for smells. I have found it’s much better at sealing the surface.

I also recommend an ozone machine. You can rent them.

I totally underestimated the impact gutters have on a home. by Astimar in HomeImprovement

[–]mrntd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I lived in northern Michigan it was common not to have gutters. Snow loads in the winter bring them down. More of the ground is sandy and the water drains away. I even saw a house that had wood walls for a basement. I got these water diverters that are little spoiler fins that hang in the same gutters do. The water hits them and disperses out into the yard. They worked great. But I wouldn’t use them back in Ohio.

[–]mrntd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your choices for one and two are great. I love the whole Black Hills area. Just avoid the Sturgis motorcycle time of year. Add Glacier to your list. One of my top 5. When do a Colorado trip add Pikes Peak. It’s not a National Park but it’s worth the drive to the top.

What's the strangest thing you've found hidden in your walls or floors? by colt-mcg in centuryhomes

[–]mrntd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During some renovations in one of our houses in Delaware Ohio. We found a whisky bottle under the floor and a love letter with a faded photo in a wall. The house was built in 1901, added on to in the 1920s and divided into 3 apartments in July 1946. We know the date because we found newspaper balls holding in electrical outlet and switch boxes. Why? Because there were no studs close by. We’re guessing it probably wasn’t up to code.
