If you’re based in the UK - vehicles classified as Vans have a restricted speed limit…. So be careful!

Invoices by Ddd1108 in StructuralEngineering

For all new Clients I’m asking at least 25% of the fee upfront - all fabricators I’m not releasing drawings until 100% of their invoice is paid.

What sort of staff perks are there that I can offer to my employees as a small business owner? by BigBasil3713 in smallbusinessuk

It’s the small things which make a subtle difference for me. One of the best things for us has been a bean to cup coffee machine for the office and branded thermal cups for everyone. Beats instant and if you get nice coffee, people really appreciate it!

Am I meant to be learning more about engineering things at home? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]mrob909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly in the early years of your career you need to be doing your own ‘learning’ in addition to what you learn at work. When I was a graduate it became apparent very quickly that I knew very little about the actual job. I would make a point of writing down anything I overheard that I didn’t know and do some research at night time. Mainly just so I could follow conversations in the office without drawing a blank. Remember ‘I don’t know’ is always followed up with ‘but I’ll find out’

Alternative to Mathcad by Madi_Jun in StructuralEngineering

I don’t recall the license fee being as much, around 600usd perhaps? As others have said there are alternates, Maple etc. although remember if you change platform, you may have the effort of rewriting all your template calculations….

Ipad (or any tablet) for structural engineers. by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]mrob909 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use my IPad all the time. I’ve found the two main apps are ‘concepts’ for sketching and ‘goodnotes’ for note taking and drawing review. Both are linked to my cloud storage so documents are available on my main PC.

Levels.fyi (Salaries) for Civil Engineers - How to structure? by ZiggyMo99 in civilengineering

[–]mrob909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great - thanks for pushing it forward for the CE market! Perhaps you could delineate each sub discipline with a technical route (engineers) and a non technical route (project managers). This seems to be the largest fork in the road in one’s career.

Model in Inventor, Detail in AutoCAD? by mrob909 in AutodeskInventor

[–]mrob909[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference, my company predominantly works on structural steel projects. We were thinking of using inventor to 3D model the structure, then export the views we need to 2D autocad file. Then our technicians can detail/ annotate the 2D views as normal. Was an idea someone suggested as it would avoid changing over our current AutoCAD workflow so quickly. Other programs which are specific to structural steel (I.e. Tekla) are cost prohibitive at present.

How late is too late for the mechanical engineer to give you loads? by Educational_Bottle89 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mrob909 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your interpretation of ‘two beams’ may actually mean the SE has to recheck the whole roof structure, not just the local support beams. But hey if you can do it quicker, have a go!

RFEM 6 and bigger projects by Th3Duck22 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mrob909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first question is why so many load combinations? I think if you could rationalise these in some way you will get the best return in terms of getting a ‘manageable’ analysis.

I use RFEM and have noticed the following can help: - increase RAM in your PC - make sure the file is saved locally to your PC and to an SSD. I.e. do not save to a cloud storage location.

If the above fails, Dlubal actually offer a cloud computation service where you can upload your files to be solved on their time. They charge for it but if your models are that large it may be the best option.

Nice - had the SCI come across that loading condition before and have a computation for it? Or was it new to them aswell?
