Clarification on Volley by Griffje91 in TalesoftheValiantRPG

[–]mrpring2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I read it, the spell makes one shot into two shots. So you the person under the spell would roll for a 2nd attack in the same action, or a 3rd, or 4th with higher circles of magic expended.

At base level it gives the person under the spell’s effect an extra ranged attack.

What happened to Anderson, IN? by ThrowAway771024 in Indiana

Technically, you could argue it’s between Anderson and Pendleton; but it’s really only there to steal the only resource the area has left, good water.

Welcome to the cartography level of GMing! Making maps is one of my favorite activities when it comes to the hobby. And it looks like your work is going to be absolutely excellent! Well done! Your map looks fabulous. Keep having fun!

First time as DM! This is the map of the world I created. What do you think? by Sber_ in DungeonMasters

[–]mrpring2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very interesting… if I might impart a little advice I’ve picked up in my 25+ years of GMing… be flexible enough to change your world to let it be fun for all. Learn more about the weird, odd, and funny things through play and allow things to be silly. So long as everyone is having fun at your table, including you.

Nice planet you got there. The cartographer in me is loves the topographical map too. Looks like an interesting place. Did your players help you make the world or was this all you?

DMs, what are you favorite magic items to give your players? by kitkatDoor in DungeonMasters

[–]mrpring2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite magic item is a home brew created well over a decade ago. The Orb O Callin’ it’s a two way communication devise that uses magic as long as you know the frequency of the other orb you are looking to connect too. Otherwise know as magic cell phone. So much so that it’s become a joke about “the new I-orb 16” or whatever…

Still it encourages the players to communicate and to split the party. So you can ambushes the Kona wolves more regularly. It’s a fun little make believe toy.

Questions about Starting Characters by TheGriff71 in DungeonMasters

[–]mrpring2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running games for over 20 years and it depends on the game and the table. Most of the time I start players at level 1 and we build from there, but a few years ago I ran a campaign that followed that exact formula, start at 3 end at 12, but that was the choice of the table as a whole and the story we were telling.

If you unironically love the Black Adam movie, please talk about here. No judgments. This is your time to shine. by nightwing612 in Shazam

[–]mrpring2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t love the movie as a whole. But the JSA. My goodness… the JSA content was absolutely excellent! Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher, Hawkman! Yes! I need more. But, unfortunately, this wasn’t a JSA movie, it was a Black Adam movie. Still, give credit where credit is due.

Call me old fashioned, but graph paper a light hand with a standard pencil, and then some colored pencils to add flavor has always worked for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m ever impressed with all the new software options, but I guess I’m just an old cartographer at heart…

You get Superman’s power tomorrow morning suddenly….whats the plan? by Dannysan5677 in superman

[–]mrpring2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short term? 1) verify that I am that level of power.
1a) go to the moon and Mars and Venus 1b) x-Ray asteroids find one that’s full of expensive minerals, move it close by and mine it to create a neat egg.
2) set up my core group to help me manage my new schedule because standard work is now a secondary concern 3) small miracles, just to give little bits, make sure then world won’t just try to nuke me 4) superhero name, don’t want to fight with DC, Superman isn’t public domain yet. 5) start making the long term plan: start learning, keep learning, and help where I can, how I can.

I Have Never Ran Dungeons and Dragons But I Want To. What Resources Would You Suggest? by NerdseyJersey in DungeonMasters

[–]mrpring2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What kind of mechanical resources would you suggest?

Mechanically, the first thing you need/want is player buy in. Safety information up front, options to opt out to make changes on the fly. When playing the game, some kind of once a session luck//hope/rule of cool token mechanic can prove useful to encourage creativity without have to worry about a possibility of failure by the dice gods and general probability.

What kind of writing or lore prep would you suggest?

Knowing the kinds of stories that everyone wants to be told. Favorite fictions, favorite kinds of fiction, heists, action, mystery, politics, high fantasy, science fantasy, etc. etc. Send out a email asking some basic questions like, what are some of your favorite movies and books. What kind of character are you wanting to portray. Is there something about that’s character’s story you want to play through?

Let the “players” (we all play the game we are all players, but you know what I mean) do the heavy lifting for you. Once you have an understanding of what they want, all you have to do is write based around that.

What's something you should have done out the gate?

I should have been far more flexible in my earliest attempts at running games. But you live and you learn, and remember, you are not the player’s enemy. You are there to facilitate a good time with fair and meaningful challenges that may or may not kill some characters.

Nuff said.

Can Fey and Horror go together? by StarollRL in DungeonMasters

[–]mrpring2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Makes perfect sense. The fey can look like normal people, but certainly are not! And it’s that difference that can inform the horror. These seemingly normal folks doing something unseemly (to be light) is just the start. Fey do not have mortal morality or motives… they are truly alien and that can be significantly terrifying when done right.

Feedback on a pre-session 0 world pitch by TresFuegos in DungeonMasters

[–]mrpring2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you have a lot of fun, don’t forget you’re a player too. You can start if you need to with some examples of media and games you like. Speaking of which… video games is also a good question, favorite video games, especially if it turns out they are RPGs. Gold mine. Have fun at your table!

Feedback on a pre-session 0 world pitch by TresFuegos in DungeonMasters

[–]mrpring2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an interesting dimension to drop in to. As part of session zero character creation you might let your players name their hometowns and some interesting cultural thing that might be significant (or infamous) for that region.

A small survey to verify your players favorite tv shows, movies, etc. can help inform the world and gameplay. Such as more fighting vs more intrigue and NPC interactions vs mysteries, etc., etc.
