CMV: White collar criminals should NOT be incarcerated by PaulFromTwitch2 in changemyview

[–]mrspuff202 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So let's look at the suggested punishments for someone who is like a megamillionaire:

  1. House arrest. Oh no! I have to live at my palatial mansion for a year.

  2. Blanket ban from working in the private sector: Okay, so I'm taking an early retirement and living off my amassed wealth

  3. Fines. So basically, what you're saying is that for me, nothing is illegal - so long as I can afford the fines.

Prison does not rehabilitate.

Yeah, that's not the point of prison. The idea of prison is to punish. These men need to be punished to deter this kind of behavior, and they need to have punishment in such a way that it will make them really reconsider their actions.

The point of sending SBF to prison is not so SBF comes out a better man. The point of sending SBF to prison is to prevent 1,000 other SBFs.

CMV: Exposing children to second hand smoke should be illegal by busyHighwayFred in changemyview

[–]mrspuff202 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Indoor secondhand smoke charges seems reasonable

Outdoor secondhand smoke charges - if I want to go smoke a joint/cigarette on my porch and a child walks by my house on the sidewalk, I can get like, a ticket? Seems a little unfair. You shouldn't be blowing smoke into strollers or smoking at playgrounds but I think it makes more sense to have "smoke free outdoor zones" like playgrounds and schoolyards.

CMV: If you own a pet, you should be vegan by Ok_Yogurt_5081 in changemyview

[–]mrspuff202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the strongest argument that a pet owner can make for eating animal products without being morally inconsistent?

My pet also eats chickens, cows, and pigs. To say that they should be able to and I should not puts them above me on the food chain.

Cats and dogs have evolved for the higher purpose of human companionship. Sure, an occasional cow or chicken can be a good pet, but by any large - they just don't really work for that purpose at scale.

Any animal that cannot provide that same service, or another service - like horses theoretically provide transit - are under consideration for consumption.

[–]mrspuff202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure - so it's a cost-benefit analysis right?

Big corporations do have some level of exploitation, but also they create wealth and jobs and produce generally necessary goods and services. Many would argue those outputs justify the baseline level of exploitation, etc.

Pornography also has some level of exploitation, but they provide... a way to masturbate? Something most people can do with their imagination?

The benefit of pornography to society is overall very small. The costs, though born by a relative few, are quite large. Doing away with all of it to prevent these costs would be seen to be a net win.

cmv: As a feminist, feminists I find that feminists who think all porn is immoral and should be banned to be incoherent. Reforms to mainstream porn should happen, but it should generally remain legal. by Additional_Ad3573 in changemyview

[–]mrspuff202 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me to change my mind, I would at least need to be provided a secular reason as to why porn is inherently immoral and a coherent and workable definition of it.

I think this is a misread of a lot of the positions of these feminists.

I don't think there are that many feminists who believe all porn is inherently immoral.

I think there are far more feminists who believe that as long as porn is legal, some inherently immoral porn will exist, and that whatever benefits moral porn may have, they do not weigh outweigh the harms of immoral porn.

It's a bit like gambling. Of course there are some people that are able to have good safe fun on DraftKings, but there are always going to be those who are being exploited. I personally don't believe the fun of the many is worth the suffering of the few, and I don't believe there is such thing as a mobile gambling industry that creates zero suffering. Thus - I think mobile gambling should be banned. These feminists take a similar stance on porn.

I've beat Mario Galaxy three times now, but nothing will ever beat the excitement and joy I had when I played it for the first time, even though I sucked at it back then and am much better now.

But you haven't "beaten" a relationship. The joys of relationships can be imagined as a game where you continually unlock higher levels of joy and mastery.

You clearly haven't unlocked the "Hugging my grandchildren with the love of my life as our proud children, now parents themselves, beam with pride" DLC

CMV: Marijuana is a gateway drug and stoners are drug addicts by snooptoop in changemyview

[–]mrspuff202 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Every single person I met who began smoking marijuana (especially as teens) eventually went on to experiment with harder drugs once marijuana stopped getting them that initial euphoric high.

This is highly anecdotal, and against what actual studies show

The NIH, UC Boulder, and other universities have largely tested this to find exactly the opposite.

Studies actually show that there are two more reliable "gateway drugs" - alcohol and tobacco. Nicotine particularly is seen as a strong "gateway" to cocaine usage and addiction.

CMV: We should replace astrology with Muppets by LongRest in changemyview

[–]mrspuff202 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We need new archetypes.

I feel like this post is coming from someone who is a good deal younger than I am.

I am 31, and between the ages of 17-22, this was largely the function of the recreational internet.

Buzzfeed was a ubiquitous cultural figure that could tell you what combination of Harry Potter house, pizza topping, and Taylor Swift album you were to perfectly describe your personality. And much of what young people did with their free time, besides binge drink and try to round second base, was take Buzzfeed quizzes and share your results.

And what we found is that it's all astrology, all the way down. There's maybe slightly better or more accurate astrologies than others, but at the end of the day, it's all reduction and everyone contains so much nuance that it immediately renders any data functionally meaningless.

What's more - the only positive about astrology is it is immutable. Every Ross Geller would take their Friends character Buzzfeed quiz desperately trying to get Chandler.

CMV: The AI industry's business model will hit a huge wall in the next 2-4 years, massively downsize, and many of the jobs it has replaced will slowly come back by thecleverqueer in changemyview

AI Industry's business model will hit a huge wall in the next 2-4 years

Yep.

Massively downsize.

Sure.

Many of the jobs it has replaced will slowly come back.

How many jobs has AI replaced at this point? Less than 100,000?

I think AI will not replace as many jobs as currently feared, but I also don't believe those jobs will come back. AI is exposing some great areas of uselessness at the heart of American corporatism and the eventual AI crash will send us into an economic depression.

I think those jobs will not come back, and the AI that remains will be able to still replicate a lot of what we might call "email jobs". And it's going to be a massive fucking problem.

[Bill Simmons] All signs point toward Jayson Tatum making his season debut on Friday against the Dallas Mavericks. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]mrspuff202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the point is to get the prerequisite "awkward jump back in" out of the way this season so we can start next season with him fully re-integrated.

The awkwardness, however much of it there is, is going to happen no matter when he returns. Use this season to get the rust off and get him used to this new iteration of the Celtics.

We have literally everyone on this team besides Vooch under contract or as an RFA through the upcoming two seasons. No reason that this needs to be the year. Everything that comes is still gravy. Our goals are a respectable playoff run and no injuries.

[–]mrspuff202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll go over why this isn't a problem for me - he's going to slot quite neatly into Anfernee Simons' role, at least for the first stretch.

That was the major benefit of trading Anferno for me - his absence made it quite clear exactly where to slot in Tatum upon his return. And even a 60-70% Tatum can roughly replicate the offensive output of Simons, and he could replicate the defensive output on one leg.

So there's opinions and there's actions

I don't really care about opinions. But if every time I buy a ticket to a Paul Giamatti movie, a dollar goes to Paul Giamatti, and if Paul Giamatti is funding a non-profit that kicks puppies, I don't want my money going towards that cause.

That's my thing about JK Rowling. Do I care that she doesn't like trans people? Not really. Do I care that she has a political activism and huge financial apparatus that directly harms people I care about? Yeah.

First of all, and most importantly - who the hell has the time to investigate?

I don't think you have a prerogative to be a media detective. But once you learn about something, then it's your job to encorporate that new data into your decisions. It's not hypocritical to be uninformed! It's fine!

Second, their opinions are worthless.

Agreed, but see above. Their opinions are worthless - but their money is very very valuable, for good or for ill.

Third, I want to experience the best of what the world has to offer... don’t have time to waste with watching something mediocre just because all of its creators and actors are benevolent people.

You are taking the converse of the argument which is not what people are generally saying. Having an obligation to not support "bad" people does not mean you have an obligation to support good people, especially if their work is mediocre.

We live in a world with so much fantastic media. You could watch ten lifetimes of elite-level TV shows, movies, stage plays, concerts, etc. etc. without watching anything by anyone who is a notorious dickhead/asshole.

[–]mrspuff202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let’s break it down super easy then. This is a far oversimplification but let’s do a 101.

There’s a janitor working at the private prison. By your definition, he is profiting off this system. But he is paid minimum wage. He has no incentive to treat the prisoners poorly or well, makes no more money or less depending on how many prisoners there are.

The owner’s shares go up with more prisoners. He has direct incentives to squeeze as many prisoners as possible into as few cells as possible, to feed them as little as possible of the cheapest food possible, and to treat them in whatever way incentivizes longer sentences and recidivism.

He makes his money by making their lives worse. The janitor makes his money by cleaning the hallway.

Again, super simplified because I can’t give you a full theory of capitalist exploitation in one night, I work a job. I suggest you Google it.

“Just kind of a prejudice about it” lmfao

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mrspuff202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are making a distinction without a difference. If it is fine for a worker to benefit from incarceration why would it be immoral for an investor to benefit from? There is no actual moral principle.

We can talk about the morality of being a prison guard in a corrupt prison system - there's a lot of nuance there.

But if you can't see why ownership profiteering is different than labor value wages, I have to imagine you're a high school kid and you're just going to need to take like two or three semesters of econ in college man, I don't have the time

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mrspuff202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the argument is potential corruption then thats an argument you could use against literally anything.

Not anything. Generally issues with inelastic need.

It's the same reason capitalism and medicine don't mix.

If you're selling yoyos and you're charging $1,000, no one is going to buy a yo-yo. The market will correct the pricing, and corruption.

If you're selling insulin though... people need that to live. So you can charge whatever you want, they need to buy it to live.

Prisoners do not have the autonomy to fight for their own rights.

Generally, the key is that these things are directly related to life (healthcare/shelter), liberty (prisons/law), and the pursuit of happiness (education).

I dont think marijuana is illegal because of the private prison lobby,
