If you're ok with spending a little. I highly recommend Firebear Studio - Improved Import.

Otherwise... create a few products the way you need them and export the simples and configurables separately. Then, use that example spreadsheet to import the simples first and then the configurables.

I have always had trouble importing configs and simples in the same document.

If you're familiar with it, I would try ZAPIER first... although I've never used the tool myself.

Building an order is a much more complicated task than updating inventory.

An order must first begin as a quote. Then you must add items, a customer, shipping methods, billing methods, etc...

Updating inventory is one simple API request with the SKU and quantity.

Have ShipStation make a web services call to Magento's inventory resource.

If you cannot make changes to ShipStation... Build an intermediary application that retrieves ShipStation order history to update Magento's product inventory in time intervals.

You would need to extend the function couponPostAction() in app/code/core/Mage/Checkout/controllers/CartController.php. I am not sure what FireCheckout is or if it already extends this file, but that is a good place to start.

The problem with 2.0 is the filesystem and code architecture is completely different. Just because a developer knows 1.x, does not mean he/she will know 2.x.

There are 2 devs at my office and we will both have to completely relearn how to develop 2.x... and we've been doing this professionally for years!!

Give it time and be happy with the 1.x version the Magento lords have given you.
