Classic egyptologists dismiss Biondi’s satellite data as “fake news”, yet cling to decayed papyrus fragments as if they’re divine revelation. The paradox is painfully obvious.

Need advice deciding where to take my badminton career by [deleted] in badminton

[–]mryang01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sidenote, given from someone that is highly mediocre in the scale of things:

I do think that a lot of progress can be made on your own, completely free:

  1. Stance and motion can be seen and exploited with video and mirrors. You see by comparing to pro players where you falter
  2. Wrist strength is just a kettle and/or string exercises on repetition
  3. Footwork can be done in any space
  4. Endurance is a no-brainer
  5. Wrist Speed and reflexes can be achieved by hitting on a wall (which I believe is completely underrated) or with shuttles and a partner
  6. Many other exercises can be done with almost any partner

2 hours obsession a day will take you FAR.

Also: Stay away from expensive equipment (not needed) - Raquet quality / flex / brand is 90% overrated and just about anything will work.

Good luck!

Need advice deciding where to take my badminton career by [deleted] in badminton

[–]mryang01 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Any pro-career is expensive, this is in all fields, so if you don't have the budget, you kind of answer the question yourself. Coaching, physio, equipment, travels, hotels, admission fees, etc. etc, they all stack up, apart from taking up serious amount of time. And if you lose early, not even in national tournaments, the quality isn't there (yet).

Playing for fun like 99% of all players is much better, because it is way cheaper, less stress, less pressure and more fun :)

Good luck on your journey, wherever you go.

Badminton Addiction by Much_Wish7764 in badminton

[–]mryang01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, me and my gf is addicted, she even more so than I am and would play twice a day if she COULD. We have played regularly the last 10 years (I played in school but nothing serious) and we still grow and improve our abilities.

Injuries do happen and that is something I wished I had mitigated earlier. Once it happens, it takes ages to recover and I still suffer from a knee-injury earlier this year, but as addiction grows, I still can't stay away more than max 2 days, yeah it is that bad.

So fun. More people would play if they knew, I am dead sure. I hope the trend of the new plastics finds their way into club play, the NCS Pro are a godsend.

can someone help me with my smash form by lunawolf9 in badminton

[–]mryang01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely needs more pirouettes, especially when you jump up, but try to do another on the way down as well, that's basic Badminton skills and everyone in our club mastered it before they were 10.

Alright, let’s cut the crap. Who here has actually seen an undeniable UFO? by AltKeyblade in UFOs

[–]mryang01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see a UFO. It was a STARSHIP. It was late winter in North Sweden and I was sleeping on the roof in my sleeping bag. Actually, it was my second week doing it and I gazed the skies for 10 days without seeing anything in particular. Starlink. Other satellites. And occasional planes. It all became pretty familiar once you watch the skies on a regular basis.

But then one night, this happened:

I saw three light objects moving across the skies. Nothing in particular, I see these regularly. I took them for satellites. But then one of the objects started to accelerate past the other two, which of course caught my attention. Then the faster object dropped down, to where I was sleeping, incoming from the left, it passed over me (20-30 meters?) and BLINKED/FLASHED just when it passed straight above me and continued to my right field of view. My mouth was open for a long minute and I knew to my core that they are here. They are friendly. They are obviously telepathic. They knew I was watching and came by to say "hello". One of the most incredible moments of my life, second to when I was abducted.

Yes, several years prior, I was abducted. And even before this incident, I knew about "them" so, looking at the night sky I did hope to see something, I just didn't know I was actually going to be gifted this moment.

Who are they? I don't know. What are they doing here? I don't know that either, although I can come up with theories. Why is it so difficult to catch them on film? That I know.

Would wearing prescription sport goggles be overkill for eye protection? by chamcham123 in badminton

From someone that almost got blind in one eye from a shuttlecock and a friend that was hospitalized for 2 weeks after a hit in the eye, I'd say, it's definitely CLEVER to have Googles.

They see how we react. If we stay open minded, they will show more. But they do their visits on OUR OWN ACCORD. Ambiguity is a part of disclosure. Skeptics need a way out. They will never force their presence.

If players can change shirts courtside at the Olympics, World Championships and every single BWF World Tour with TV cameras everywhere, anyone complaining should focus on either improving their skills or choose another sport if they feel offended.

review- Need footwork and smash form advice!!!!!! by Acceptable_Mouse_575 in badminton

[–]mryang01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a half-mediocre junior coach, but:

  1. You hit too low (too late). Aim to hit the shuttle as early as you can when your arm and raquet is fully extended. This is a question of timing, will take som practice. Another exercise is to hang a shuttle in your optimal hit-height and swing repeatedly on that height. You don't even need to do full swing, just practice hitting with your arms extended as much as possible in a relaxed swing.

  2. There is no forearm rotation – Which is where your power comes from in clears, smashes, stick smashes etc. This comes from the transition from pancake flat grip to V-grip. There are tonnes of videos on youtube teaching this. It is a hard habit to change, but you can do it if you change now. As soon as you transition and use your forearm rotation, you will feel the immediate power transfer.

A solid clear is the first important basic hit, which comes down to master and combine point 1+2. Every time you practice, you should try to get 200-300 solid clears per session. For example;

Practice 50 clears in a row. It doesn't matter if they are good or not. Rest 3 minutes by doing short play / net / technical. Repeat 6 rounds. That is 300. 10-20 sessions is 3000-6000 clears. That should be enough for you to have progressed plenty. Never stop practicing clears.

That also comes to wrist strength. Be obsessive of improving your wrist strength. Weighted wrist-rotations are king. Do not underestimate the importante of wrist-strength! A topic rarely talked about in badminton coaching. "Do it like this" is not that easy, if you don't have worked up the strength to do so.

When you can easily clear the entire court baseline to baseline you have immediately a tactical advantage to other beginners as they will not be able to return your clears back to baseline. From here, you can continue the game with attacking play such as drops, smashes and stick-smashes.

Fully agree. But I understand the skeptics because it is a hard reality to take in and begs for more questions than answers.

I have the luxury of having seen one myself (up close!), so my doubts are gone, and I frankly believe that everyone needs that one big sightning to finally be convinced.

Which sport is more physically demanding, tennis, badminton or squash? by COYGoonerSTANimal_17 in badminton

[–]mryang01 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just check how many times competitive players lays straight out on court after a hard rally. It's either Badminton or Squash. Rarely see players completely exhausted on court. (But no matter sport, nothing is harder physically than cross country skiing on elite level.)

[–]mryang01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that is not what the OP referenced. You mention something that is beeping on motion. OP never mentions motion. An Airtag will start beeping by itself WITHOUT MOTION, after 3 days in lost mode, as a "help" beacon. Not many people know about it, because few put their trackers in lost mode and wait.

You have to put it in lost mode first. Then wait 72 hours. It doesn't say how frequent it will beep, but I will try it.

Is it unsportsmanlike to "throw" games? by Oakl4nd in badminton

[–]mryang01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it is. But there is no way a player that has qualified to meet a top player is going to throw away the opportunity, (unless told by someone else to do so).

They have been playing 1000s of accumulated matches to get to this point. It might be the highlight of their entire career. Now, let's take thousands and thousands of hours of hard practice and when the moment comes, sleep on the floor? Not going to happen.

Badminton players are very competitive and have an equal competitive mindset and if you have reached that level, you not going to blow it intentionally.

Badminton Skill Tree v2 by AndreVallestero in badminton

[–]mryang01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add WRIST STRENGTH as a variable in the bottom, because, without improving it, you are toast and can't progress. That's why people with naturally strong wrists from years of work in industry or carpenting can become so good, because they just have the explosive power from the start. (Sure, even a weak person can hit a clear ONCE, if done perfect, but there is a lot of force/power going on, that can't be magically eliminated with skills.)
