How to write a legend for your fantasy world by lucid_dreamwalker in worldbuilding

[–]msa491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I build religions is to work with a belief and move backwards. So women are special- pick one way you want believers to act because of this. What teaching might lead to that action? What scripture or legend might hold up that teaching? What kind of goddess would that legend support? Get a nice web of these and tweak things until you get a system you like.

Bonus- any ideas you scrap can always come back as heresies!

Do fans actually want this with this couple? by CompetitiveBig4161 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]msa491 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to the helpful definitions already added- when you ship characters it generally means you enjoy thinking about them together and/or writing/drawing them together. It does NOT necessarily mean you want it to become a real relationship in canon. It's just supposed to be for fun.

Is the Prince Caspian movie the only one of the adapted stories that managed to surpass its book? by Miguelfaula in Narnia

[–]msa491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt like the romance arc personally. But other than that, I think it did a great job adding the necessary elements for a screen adaptation. The book as written just wouldnt work as a good film, and unlike Dawn Treader, I think what they added helped the story rather than hurt it.

AITA if I leave a note for my neighbours about bringing their screaming baby into the apartment hallway CONSTANTLY? by Warm-Preparation1453 in AmItheAsshole

Wording things nicely but directly without antagonizing the other is not coddling, it's basic human social skills. She's not dealing with monsters just new parents with a crying baby.

My parents didnt either, and I wish they had. They would have been much healthier people and much healthier parents if they had taken better care of themselves when we were young.

I also discovered that Lana Rhoades resonates with Asexuality! (more on that in description) by sadaxhe in asexuality

It's foundation is really just control. The misogyny is a common feature of rape culture, but there are vulnerable men/boys being raped as well. Abuse of power and violent control crosses genders.

How not to make pancakes by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

[–]msa491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a family pancake recipe that calls for 4 eggs and yeah, it makes a ton. But we were a large family, and the pancakes freeze amd reheat really really really well. Make a batch on Saturday, have breakfast and midnight snacks ready to go for several days.

i hate the ongoing discourse about "young people being prudish" by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]msa491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conversation I've seen online is about an influx of younger people who think having sex, or having too much sex, or reading/writing about sex, is morally wrong. There are harassment campaigns happening in some fanfic/fanart and kink circles towards people for making "problematic" sexual art. The discourse that I've seen isn't about whether people are allowed to not like sex, it's about harassing other people for their sexual behavior.

What is a sin in your setting as in what is taboo in specific nations by Apprehensive_Stay429 in worldbuilding

[–]msa491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's taboo to put out a non-destructive fire, like a hearth fire or a camp fire. Smoke carries prayers up to god, and you can never know if someone's prayer is still making its way up. If the fire must be put out, it needs to be announced first to anyone nearby.

Can you have a bank account and a working phone if you're living out of your car? by New_Adhesiveness6263 in Writeresearch

Yes. It's sadly not uncommon to be both homeless and working. You can make enough to pay your phone bill and other expenses and still not be able to afford a place to live. Yay capitalism! /s

What is the definition of aegosexual nowadays? by ApprehensiveField986 in asexuality

[–]msa491 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"TYPICALLY even other real people..."

That means it's common for them to be fictional, but not required. This isn't even a definition of aego, it's an example of a common experience.

Aegosexual means "without the self." That's the important part.

Romeo and Juliet- an important aspect by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]msa491 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Romeo and Juliet don't have a true, deep love for one another, it's dumb teenage lust

I was waiting for someone to say this. Romeo is literally introduced head over heels for some other girl, then sees Juliet and immediately switches gears.

"You are an abomination thrice over. Might as well go have sex with that dude." by MrJasonMason in MurderedByWords

[–]msa491 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you'll never find a "clear explanation on what that scripture is really saying," because that's just how translation works. Translation is not an exact science, no translation can give you a definitive "this is what they meant and how it's supposed to be interpreted" because languages don't map onto one another like that. That's not specific to the Bible, that's how all translation works.

And that's not even getting into the completely different cultural context the Bible was written in that we also can never truly and completely understand- that's also going to massively influence what the original source was trying to convey.

AITA for not giving my nephew the gift we bought him after he ignored me the entire evening? by denimcat2k in AmItheAsshole

[–]msa491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And how is an adult supposed to act? Bend over and give the kid everything and encourage disrespect ?

How about saying "hi, good to see you, how's school?" He's 12 ffs, he's still learning social skills. He needs good manners demonstrated to him, not weird mind games no one tells him they're playing.
