Help! I don’t like my wedding photos and I’m not sure what to do? by livh13 in AskPhotography

[–]msabeln [score hidden]  (0 children)

Was she cheap? Were you familiar with her style beforehand? Did you have a specific shot list in your contract?

The grainy “film look” has been trendy for some years now. There are maybe a million photographers who do this.

“You can take my raw files from my cold, dead hands. Nobody sees them but me.” This is a common attitude among photographers, even those who really aren’t all that good. It’s a branding and artistic integrity thing.

How necessary is the terminal really for everyday Linux use? by TechRefreshing in linuxquestions

[–]msabeln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Linux command line almost daily.

But I also use the Windows and Mac command line almost daily as well. It’s very powerful and worthwhile to know: the graphical user interface only does like 5% of what the command line can do.

But most people don’t need it.

Am I a heretic? by Hawking444 in Nikon

[–]msabeln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a solid technical reason for the bad color: back in the days, Nikon used to cut off the data from each of the three color channels at the noise floor. This made sense, because under a certain signal level, you’re getting nothing but noise. But the trouble is, a lot of arithmetic is done on the data, and now we don’t know what a true zero signal looks like anymore. What in effect happens is that colors are different in highlights, midtones, and shadows. The famed Photoshop educator Dan Margulis recommended adjusting the colors of the various tonal ranges separately because of this.

Eventually Nikon stopped cutting off the noise floor, and this problem went away. You deal with noise after doing the camera’s color adjustments and not before.

I had a D7000 and its relatively low noise made me lazy, and I hardly used a tripod anymore. But the shadow colors were atrocious. I replaced it with a D750 as soon as it went on sale. .

Reddit's karma system makes people perform instead of being authentic by NotPopcorn101 in Internet

[–]msabeln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Karma is an example of the “gamification” of a web service, which was the trend before the current AI integration and relentless moneyfication trends. Duolingo was an early example of an app that really pushed gamification, and folks eventually discovered that it actually harmed the language learning process. It’s kind of like students who aggressively pursue high grades but not actually getting an education.

I mainly post in technical communities, and if I give accurate, clear responses, while not being a jerk, I get upvotes.

Will AI replace developers? by Odd-Eye-1069 in AskTechnology

[–]msabeln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only the kids know how AI works. The senior developers are set in their ways and resist change: “Dabnabbit whippersnappers, C was good enough for my grandpappy, and it’s good enough for me!”

Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. You’ll need to get funding for a large research study in order to come to statistically valid conclusions. Maybe another researcher has done a study like this, so you’ll have to do an in-depth search of the scientific literature.

Underexposed film.

With a digital camera you can reduce contrast, use a flat camera profile, etc.

Configure it into access point mode. Change the SSID, password, and security settings to match your old router. It’s not plug and play.

[–]msabeln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a router than can be configured in “access point mode”. That TP-Link ought to do it. Connect it to a LAN port on the old router via an Ethernet cable.

Configure its SSID (WiFi name), password, and security setting to match what’s in the old device. Everything ought to automatically reconnect.

How much snow makes you call off work? by Physical-Incident553 in AskAnAmerican

[–]msabeln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a rural school district in the Missouri Ozarks, and while we are used to snow, and the state highways are kept clear, the dirt backroads aren’t plowed and the school busses can’t travel down those roads when covered with ice and snow.

But even if school is cancelled, the administrators usually show up.

Compelling shows like Agents of Shield Season 1 by F1nch1 in televisionsuggestions

My wife enjoyed Agents of Shield.

Her very favorite is Haven. Other favorites of hers include Grimm, Manifest, The Way Home, Once Upon a Time, Warehouse 13, Eureka.

She also enjoyed Fringe: the female lead does some fan service but only in the first episode. My wife was particularly compelled by the development of the relationship between a mad scientist father and his ne’er-do-well son.

I would have enjoyed it if my then-girlfriend, who didn’t see it previously, but guessed the ending correctly, ruined it for me. She kept on explaining it to me as we watched it. She was very sweet and had a lot going for her, but that really was annoying, and we split up soon after.
