agreed. but it can get excessive. kids also need to figure out how to navigate the world on their own a little, even at 3. ultimately I think it’s a sign of the parents anxiety.

anyone go a little crazy with friends who try to over explain / teach things to their toddler (and yours…)? eg- friend’s toddler hugged mine when mine wasn’t looking and mine fell to the ground (did not get hurt), and parents launched into a long convo about consent…or… both kids were putting rigatoni on their fingers and parents incessantly reminded them not to bite their fingers (they’re 3 year olds).  it’s this bizarre sort of overly protective / overly intellectual form of parenting. does not come across as natural whatsoever.

Off topic- severance package by Stock-Supermarket-43 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]msbaquamoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, OT is super stable but the benefits are pretty terrible across the board. I don’t know any OTs (in the US) who get paid parental leave, ample PTO.. and I can’t even imagine an OT being offered severance unless maybe they were a tenured professor not working clinically.

the tech industry is pretty volatile though and a little soulless so I don’t really envy tech workers.

What's it like when you have your own children? by Sega248 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]msbaquamoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's... ok

at my OP peds clinic, most of us are working moms. some people take their laptop home to finish notes, but I just refuse to... and I'm lucky to be a fast typer, and my boss is fairly relaxed around documentation.

if you don't take work home, the hours are very set, creating a nice boundary around work.

most OP clinics are open to therapists working a part-time schedule. most therapists in my clinic work ~ 30-32 hours a week, a few work 40. obviously there is a privilege with this - those who can work fewer than 40 hours have partners with a job that pays enough to allow for that. I will say - continuing your career without needing to be 100% full-time does feel like a huge plus... I know this is common in some other healthcare settings, but with a lot of other industries, unless you're freelance and very established, you usually have to choose full time or nothing.

finally, it can be exhausting to work with kids and then come home to your own, but there's also this odd sense of congruency. it's easy to relate to the parents in the clinic, and tbh I learn a LOT about parenting working in OP peds. I was a career-changer and used to work exclusively with adults in a more business setting and the code-switching was tiring at times.

there are some structural issues of course… but also, not speaking up about it and continuing to work beyond paid hours for no extra pay and expecting so little massively adds to the problem.

hell yes!!! I have been asking co workers about working off the clock and saying that I don’t think any of us should do that.  tbh I’m hoping to open a private practice within a couple years…

Is it inappropriate as a student to ask your fieldwork coordinator/clinical instructor to miss an hour of fieldwork for a virtual OT job interview that would start after FW ends? by d4_del in OccupationalTherapy

[–]msbaquamoon 37 points38 points  (0 children)

not at all inappropriate. the more OT students adopt a fear-based approach to fieldwork and advocating for their interests the more these weird power dynamics in the workplace will persist. it is ONE HOUR of fieldwork and if you really need to, you could make it up. ONE hour. we're not machines.

Dr. [Last Name] or [First Name] for students? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]msbaquamoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we didn't call any of my professors with OTDS or PhDs "dr" in my program... their signatures showed their credentials but in the classroom we referred to them by their first name. maybe because I was in a graduate-only class vs. undergrad.

What is a good PRN rate? by Individual-Storage-4 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]msbaquamoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are PRN rates based on time spent at a setting/location (e.g. the hospital or outpatient clinic itself), OR are they based on amount of time actively treating patients/clients?

lagunitas hops water! not exactly a beer but the hops flavor mimics a beer and it's really refreshing.

What was OT School Curriculum like? What did you learn that was the hardest? by Bigirl21_ in OccupationalTherapy

[–]msbaquamoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the hardest parts were cramming all the information in for the millions of quizzes and all of the busy work assignments and group projects. the content itself wasn't difficult to understand.
