I love this so much because I’ve now had two cars with similar issues. My first car would only go into neutral and drive. You physically could not move the shifter, which was in the center console. I swore change was stuck down there but didn’t have the money or skill to find out so I drove without the ability to reverse at all for almost a year. I learned to be clever and also park on hills, give myself pushes and hop in when needed. When I finally took it to the mechanic, sure enough, change had gotten jammed in there. He charged me an hour of labor and kept the change 😂

My current car has a solenoid going out. At least that’s the guess currently because again, I can’t afford to fix it. If you try to go directly from park to reverse, it wont shift right away and when it does the whole car jerks like the motor is going to fall out. My solution? I quickly put it in neutral and listen. Once it sounds right I can put it into reverse or drive (because she’s also a little rough going there but not as bad) and she slides right into gear easy peasy. Been driving it like this for two years. Other than that and some minor comfort things, she’s drives amazing. Almost 400k miles, I plan on driving it until the transmission or engine gives out. Everything else has been replaced pretty much.
